Casa Caracol is nestled on the side of the mountain in a delightful neighborhood a short walk from city center. The house consists of 3, one bedroom apartments plus a guest room. You can rent one apartment to sleep 2 people or add on the guest room or other apartments to accommodate up to 8 people. The house works very well for a couple or groups. Pricing depends on the number of units. The view from the entire house is spectacular including the mountains and sunset. There is a large roof terrace with a 360 degree view, said by many to be one of the best in town, and small garden with fountain. Large sunny windows, Boveda ceilings, built-in couches, beautiful painted details, and a unique circular interior stairway filled with plants make Casa Caracol a delight to the eye. Heaters, rocking chairs, queen size beds, cotton sheets, and down comforters make it a comfortable place to live.
All apartments have a private entrance onto the plant filled central stairway. Weekly maid service is included. Additional services can be arranged.
San Miguel is noted for its art schools as well as many private teachers. Casa Caracol is an easy walk to the Instituto Allende.
Should you visit when the hosts are in residence you will be given a wealth of information and help as you settle into the area.

Charlotte and Wolf designed and built their house in San Miguel in 1995. Wolf is a fine furniture maker and Charlotte is a photographer. Their unique style is reflected throughout the house. The neighbor hood is Colonia Caracol which means snail. The house is built around a curved central stairway like a snail house. People who stay in the house comment on how inviting, safe and comfortable they feel. Plus they love all the color.
charlotte purchased this apartment in 1974
Who doesn't want a house in San Miguel de Allende? Not only is it beautiful and have a climate that cannot be beat year round it is also full of interesting people. We especially like to be in SMA in the summer to get out of the Texas heat where we live the rest of the year.
Our neighborhood is special. It is a mix of middle class Mexicans, Canadian and people from the US. Everyone if friendly. Many feel we have the best view in town from our roof terrace. If you should visit when we are in San Miguel we will give you many tips on places to see and will also bring you to visit some of the neighboring villages if you so desire. And a trip to the hot springs is always fun.
I have stayed at this property several times. It has some pluses, such as the incredible rooftop view of town (and partial views from Apt #2), and really neat design features. It is in a quiet neighborhood (by San Miguel standards). It is a beautiful (if long) downhill walk to center. For most folks, it would be a taxi ride home. While there is a small tienda store just steps away for drinks and some supplies, most shopping will require a taxi or hike to larger stores.
The kitchen in apt 2 is adequate, and well stocked with implements. The furnishings are simple and usable, and the full size bed is better than many in Mexico.
The owners (who may not be on property when you are there) are great to deal with.
My husband and I spent five nights at Apartment 2 in Casa Caracol at the end of 2012. It was a beautiful, clean, well-maintained apartment, and we would stay there again in a heartbeat. The kitchen was well equipped, and even though the bathroom was kind of small, it was fine for two people. Thanks, Charlotte, for such a great getaway.
We spent most of April in Apt #1 at Casa Caracol. I had chosen this Casa from the website
pictures. They beckoned me upward. Wow! What glorious views--180° from inside; 360°
from the rooftop terrace. Truly incredible! We even got to meet the gracious owners,
just before our stay.
My husband uses a cane, but he remained a willing and able walker, inspite of the upward approaches
from Centro. Buses and taxis easily filled in the spaces between longer walks.
The apartment was tastefully and artistically decorated. The open floor plan added a spacious feeling
to the apartment. The bed was very comfortable and the bathroom roomy.
I was able to find tennis and swimming right down the hill, on Ancho de San Antonio,
along witb good restaurants.
Maria, the plant tender , did our laundry (for a fee). She even ironed everything!
We loved Casa Caracol. It added to the Magic of San Miguel!
This home was an incredible experience. The positive energy of the home set into motion a calm and relaxed atmosphere that lasted the entire month we were there. Great location and great views.
This coming winter (2007) will be our 3rd stay at Casa Caracol. We find it a perfect base for exploring San Miguel. Close enough to town to walk but far enough to feel as if we're in one of the town's many unique neighborhoods.
Casa Caracol was one of the best things about an amazing month in San Miguel. I arrived in SMA from my flight from LA near midnight, tired and grumpy. Within five minutes, after a welcome hug from Charlotte, and a chance to soak up the lovely, beautifully decorated, airy, open space with amazing views of the city, I felt like a new person. And this was the "lesser" apartment!
Both of my hosts were incredibly friendly and helpful, the best of the ex-pat community in SMA. I spent the last week of my stay in another apartment - quite serviceable but more expensive than Casa Caracol and not comparable in any way. I cannot recommend Casa Caracol highly enough.
