We have hunkered down for the winter and will be ready when the temperatures warm, the leaves are green and the water is blue. Book now and be sure to have a cozy home in which you can escape the hubbub of daily life! Our home is the perfect place to kick back and relax in the peace and tranquility of the North Woods.
Access to Lake Independence is just down the road. And the snowmobile trail is at the back door. Lake Independence is known for its Perch, Walleye, and Northern Pike - in summer and winter. Lake Superior is 3 miles away. Or you may opt to take advantage of the tranquility of McKenzie Bay. Our home sits on this small motor-free lake and offers great bird watching and abundant wildlife. If you time your visit right, you may be able to see the beauty of the moon shining across McKenzie Bay.
We are on County Road 550 just minutes away from the historical village of Big Bay. This former lumber town is known for having produced the wooden panels for Henry Ford's Woody cars and for producing Brunswick bowling pins. There are abundant opportunities for fishing, hiking, waterfalls, biking, swimming, water skiing, snowmobiling, cross county skiing, all within the picturesque area of Big Bay.
This is a vacation spot for all seasons for anyone wanting to escape the hustle and bustle of daily living. The serenity and seclusion we offer is a great opportunity to spend time with those you love as you enjoy the beauty of watching the moon rise over the water, geese and ducks flying in and out, or witness an eagle or osprey catching their dinner. Song birds fill the mornings and evenings with their lilts.
Our family home offers the amenities of a home and is filled with memories of our parents and special family times. The walls tell the story of the love between our dad and mother and eight children.
Come sit by the outdoor firepit and enjoy the many splendors that nature has to offer and enjoy the shimmering beauty of the moonlight on McKenzie Bay. Or curl up by the indoor fireplace and enjoy the comfort of watching the dancing flames.
Our parents first came to this area deer hunting in 1937. From then on it was a love affair that captured their hearts and finally moving here permanently in 1972. For the 8 of us children it was a vacation paradise and has become home for 7 of us.
Our parents taught us many strong family values and maintaining their home for others to share has become a priority since their deaths in 2005. You get a real taste of local history and the dedication to family and life that they shared.
The Owner purchased this house in 1972
If you enjoy watching birds out your window, deer grazing by the water, eagles flying over the water in search of dinner, watching the beaver swim, and the sound of a Sand Hill Crane, you will love our location. The rolling lawn is adjacent to the woods and gives a sense of privacy. This is truly a home to relax and enjoy your vacation, away from the busyness of the city, yet close enough to enjoy the highlights of Marquette and natural beauty of Big Bay.
There is plenty of room and all the amenities of home. Lake Independence is only a mile away and is known for its perch, walleye and northern pike. McKenzie Bay offers solitude and fun catching perch or pike - when the ice is thick enough.
This lovely setting was the perfect place to undo the stresses of our busy lives in hot St Louis. We appreciate your prompt attention to our requests.
This place is very welcoming and you feel like you are staying at your close friend's house. It does not feel like rental property. The family that owns this takes very good care. We felt the house is filled with love and memories, like others who stayed here.
If you are like me who wants to have everything clean, do not look for another place. Backyard is beautiful with bay with-in steps. There is a beach that is not too far from this property that you can visit. Kitchen is fully equipped. We have stayed at various VRBO properties in the US and by far, this is the best property ever.
I would highly recommend this property.
We just returned from 9 days of the most amazing stay at this wonderful place. The home itself is filled with love and memories of a family that has decided to share their loving home. The house had everything you could possibly ever need, the kitchen fully equipped, not to mention spotless, the linens were perfect and the view is breathtaking. Whether sitting on the enclosed upstairs porch, which we did on a rainy day or on the downstairs patio, it was truly wonderful. Our dog loved his stay, chasing chipmunks or taking himself for a swim, this was undoubtedly the most relaxing vacation we have ever taken. Darlene Turner was an absolute gem in working with us and making us feel so very welcome. She has provided info on the local area and places to visit. You have to check out Sugar Loaf Mountain and Alder Creek. Go into Big Bay and visit Crams General Store, they have the most amazing meat to use on the grill that is part of the home. We have recommended this lovely spot to two of our friends. As a sign says in the house that is dedicated to their family " All because two people fell in love" We will be back as often as we can!
Everything was great! from the house to the yard we could not have asked for a better place. The owners were excellent and more than willing to help us with anything we needed, they thought of everything before we arrived and had it ready for us, the best part is we wanted to spend the week alone for some time together just the two of us and got to do exactly that. We were so comfortable we did not want to leave. We would recommend this house to anyone looking for a quite and comfortable vacation with lots of beatifull places to see.
This home provided a fantastic, relaxing getaway for my husband and I (and our greyhound). The property is set on a peaceful bay and surrounded by scenic beauty, The house was comfortable, very clean and well equipped. We enjoyed spending time on the paddle boat, sitting around the campfire and exploring the many waterfalls and hiking trails between Big Bay and Marquette. We were also appreciative of the owners' clear communictaion, timely responses and willingness to assist with questions (i.e who in town could repair our flat tire?). This home was a wonderful respite from our fast paced lives in the city. We hope to be back again next year.
My wife and I stayed here for a week in July. I can't say enough about how well kept and comfortable the cabin was. You can tell this was once a family home and everything has been thought of. There are numerous comfortable places to spend time indoors and out. Our favorite was the screened porch that has beautiful views of the lake and gets that UP air without the bugs. The dining room table that looks onto the bird feeders and small ponds was also lovely.
Most rentals seem to have the leftover furniture that the owners donate to the weekend house. (Or maybe the tenants destroy it.) That is not the case here. Everything was in great shape. The kitchen is well stocked with anything you could need.
The property is beautiful with great views and plenty of room for the dog to run around. The paddle boat was fun and the lake is serene. The only downside to the property is the nearby high speed road. It's not frequently traveled - maybe a car every minute or two - but you can hear it from the house and decks. It detracts from the feeling of seclusion. Despite that, I give it 5 stars and wouldn't hesitate to return.
We loved having Marquette only 30 minutes away. It's a fun, college kind of town with good restaurants and shops and friendly people. The area is not touristy and we felt that having the picturesque nature around the cabin combined with a nearby small city was the best of both worlds.
Everything about this vacation was wonderful. Immediately you felt right at home in this lovely well kept retreat. We loved the amount of space outside, we could walk the dogs around the property and they were fully satisfied. The fall colors were beautiful, we hit it just right...at peak!
One of my favorite things to do during a fall get-a-way is to drive the back country roads to see the sites and wildlife. There was no lack of back country roads here!
Would go back to this retreat in a minute!!!!
