We had a lovely relaxing holiday at Villa Florente. This was our second visit and is almost everything we could ask from a villa holiday. The views are breathtaking, the pool a luxury... and its location is ideal, for us.
I can’t argue that the villa is very nice, plenty of inside and outside space and a lovely pool etc. But I did not feel these alone class this as luxurious.
Firstly the bed linen was very poor, I did not expect to have stained duvets and pillows, with no pillow cases or duvet covers, it was very unhygienic so I attempted to use a second sheet for protection! Plus the duvet cover I had in the lower ground floor was not big enough to cover the bed! Which leads me to another disappointment the downstairs double room were me, my husband and daughter stayed (my husband slept on a mattress on the floor as they were not willing to move a bed in) had very little storage. There was a unit with 4 drawers, only the first 2 were usable. The 3rd and 4th fell out and the worn plastic handles crumbled! This meant that most of our clothes stayed in our suitcases for the week.
The electrics are also very poor, on the Saturday we had no hot water all day, this was extremely disappointing and my husband, father and brother in law waited patiently on a fix before then having to take cold showers as they had already missed part of the Monaco GP qualifying session (expensive tickets!). My sister and I then waited for several more hours before also having to take cold showers, this was extremely unpleasant and with me being 6 months pregnant ended up with a chest infection :(
The electrics continued to cause problems (which the caretaker explanied needed fixed), e.g. when we used the grill on the cooker the trip went and we had no TV, lights etc.
The pool and outside space was interrupted when fires were lit above us and lots of large black partials filled the pool and patios.
I believe they are selling the villa, and I have to say I got a bit of a scare when told an agent visit was arranged during our stay, thankfully this didn’t go ahead.
A car is also recommened, you have to walk either through danergous streets without paths or take the route towards the train station which is longer to reach any shops, beaches etc. all very steep roads!
It is almost impossible to describe the wonderful week we had at Villa Florente. We had just finished a very busy and stressful week in Italy before we came to France. The relaxing soothing atmosphere in Menton at Villa Florente was the perfect way to spend our second week of vacation. The villa is everything as described. It is a 3 story villa with the bottom 2 floors available for rent as Villa Florente. The top floor is a totally separate living area with the most charming and helpful couple living there. You only interact with them if you want to, or need them. They are a wealth of helpful information. In fact we enjoyed a most wonderful and magical evening with them sharing food and multiple bottles of wine. There are a lot of stairs to climb, both at the villa and in town. Plan to do a lot of walking, or rent a scooter for a few days. Secure parking is available at the Villa. With a scooter, or by train, Italy is very close, as is Monaco and Monte Carlo. Canne is also possible by scooter. The pool is very clean and refreshing, and although total nudity is not allowed, minimal suit bottoms are all that is needed. In town there is a wonderful indoor farmers market open till 1pm that has fruits, vegetables, meats and fish, bakery goods, desserts and wine. There is shopping galore, although the better deals are just across the border in Italy which has a huge, blocks long, outdoor stall shopping area. There are many fine restaurants in town, but the best is just down the street, La Topia. David is the young chef and owner, and we had the finest meal of our trip there. The prices are very reasonable compared to other places. All in all it was a fantastic week in Menton at Villa Florente. I hope we can return some day.
We have been renting many villas in the area, and in our opinion this one was disappointing. Looking at the pictures, you may get the impression that this a villa with private and with good view to the sea.
This is not true, the view to the sea is very limited (the picture "Terrace view of harbor and Italy" was not taken from the apartment, but from a terasse aloing the steep steps). It is not a villa you rent (you rent an apartment in a villa with two floors and with people living upstairs).
We didn't feel very private when being looked at and talked to from the upper floor. You must also expect to walk 106 stone steps between the road to the apartment. We tried to get the jacussi starting, but it was impossible, it was out of order.
Apart from that the villa is nice and large and well equipped. Our main problem was that we expected something much better when you pay that amount and read such a nice advertisment.
Btw, if some of you likes to be naked in the apartment, do not rent this one. When we arrived we got a long list of things that was prohibited, amond them being naked at the property. If this is important you should tell this also in the ad.
As a family of five we had a great time at Villa Florente. The house with its garden and teraces located in a calm area of Menton is very well equipped, spacious and comfortable . We had only a ten to fifteen minutes walk down to the old town of charming Menton with its typical southern france shops, retaurants and bars. Beside the possibility of having a relaxing day at the pool the villa is an excellent base to do some sightseeing (Italy 3 km, Monte Carlo 8 km), going to the beaches, visiting old mountain villages, having sports or listening to concerts in the evening. We had a wonderful holiday and would highly recommend. Susan was a pleasure to deal with.
I stayed Villa Florente with friends for a week in September. The pictures do not do this Villa justice. Everything is brand new with topnotch quality furnishings. This is certainly a million dollar villa, probably more! Spectacular view. The grounds around the house are huge and the pool spectacular. Menton (charming old town) is a 10 minute walk down the hill and the beach a few minutes further. There is a small bakery in town which makes the best croissant I've ever had and try L'Ulivo, my favorite restaurant in the town of Menton. The owners also have some excellent restaurant recommendations which are a little further away but offer amazing dining experiences with views to match. Susan(the owner) was a pleasure to deal with.
