Spacious and charming circa 17th century stone townhouse situated in the lively LaRoquette quarter in Arles, France, near the banks of the Rhone. This four-story home is comfortably furnished and has a large fitted kitchen and a terrace overlooking the rooftops of Arles. It features exposed stone walls, tall windows, and high ceilings with exposed wood beams. Arles , a walking town of winding streets and ancient Roman buildings with numerous historic architectural sights, ancient churches, cafes, top-notch restaurants and shops, inspired Van Gogh's prolific and colorful painting of the vibrant surrounding countryside. Arles is conveniently located for day trips to Avignon, Les Baux de Provence, Aix-en-Provence, Montpellier, Uzes, Orange, and the many old towns and villages along the way, and the beach at Saintes Maries-del-la-Mere and horseback riding in the Camargue and exploring the Alpilles and Luberon. Within easy access from Paris, Marseille, Montpellier, Nimes or Nice.

If you are a history buff or art enthusiast, in this city famous for its Roman amphitheatre and arena and the cemetery at Alyscamp, you will walk the same streets as the Roman Gauls, the Visigoths and the artists Van Gogh, Gauguin, Cézanne, and Picasso. Browse the crowded Saturday market along the main boulevard, or stroll the ramparts along the Rhone River. Arles has popular festivals in September and March-April. In the summer, Provence is alive with dance, music, theater, and folklore festivals. (The Gipsy Kings hail from Arles.) Arles hosts an international photography festival in early July, and photography exhibits throughout the year. Only a short drive brings you to the Carmargue, a national nature preserve which can be visited on horseback tours readily available. This leads to the beautiful Mediterranean beaches at pretty Saintes Maries de la Mer, only 35 minutes drive from Arles.

  • At the top of a circular stone staircase, the second floor library with 12-foot ceiling, exposed beams and wonderful ceiling fan, two 10-feet tall French windows, is a spacious room with shutters to cool the room from the sunny days -- 300 out of 365 days per year. This room has desk space with Internet hookup, a quaint fireplace (nonworking), terra cotte tiled floor, and a comfortable double sofa bed for two. There is bedroom on this floor which also has a 12-foot ceiling and exposed beams with ceiling fan over a most-comfortable double bed and one shutered window. Continue up the circular stairs to the third floor and you find the lovely master bedroom with comfortable double bed and again two French windows with shutters. This room is air-conditioned. Also on the third floor is a cozy bedroom with two twin beds with one shuttered window looking out on the back courtyard of the Hotel de DiVonne, a private residence. All bedrooms have nightstands, lamps, and closets.

At the risk of boring everyone at home with holiday stories, after staying in this charming house in Arles, you just want to share the experience and hope that others will follow. It is truly a French experience, all one could hope for when going abroad, getting away from the familiar.

Every amenity is provided in this spacious, handsomely decorated house located in a historic section only steps from the winding streets and ancient Roman sites. My family and I loved the tiny patisserie a few steps away which was the first thing on the agenda before the day was planned. A barbecue is provided as well as table, chairs and loungers on the rooftop; a most welcome oasis after a day of touring.

Not only is Arles historically interesting and friendly, it boasts some of the most well-run festivals I've ever been to as well as a fabulous Saturday market along the Boulevard. An international harp festival was going on which was wonderful, with many of the restored, historic churches used for venues. Such a bonus. Arles location means easy access to wondrous places such as Les Baux, Avignon, Aix and scores of charming villages. Fine dining, bistros, cafes; lots of choice in and around Arles.

The owner's very attentive representative welcomed us, gave us an introduction to the property, pointed out nearby parking and generally helped us become acquainted with Arles. I highly recommend this holiday property in Provence/ Camargue.
