San Pancho is such a great town. Unlike Sayulita which is beset with poor sanitation, huge crowds and traffic and Punta de Mita which is overpriced and pretentious, San Pancho is an authentic coastal village with historic and modern Mexican culture (music, art, food, handicrafts) that make it unique and lots of fun to explore. The people are friendly, helpful, and enjoy visitors. It's a village that succeeds in bridging the cultural gap between Mexicans and Americans/Canadians/Europeans/whomever so that you feel a member of the community, and not just a tourist. And the San Francisco Chronicle newspaper Travel Section in Sept 2011 rated San Pancho as one of the most fun and SAFEST destinations in Mexico.
Things to enjoy in San Pancho: slow down your lifestyle by visiting the beach at sunset; prepare great meals with fresh seafood and vegetables; practice your Spanish; enjoy the tropical beauty of the gorgeous garden below from the master bedroom balcony; listen to the green parrots as they fly overhead in the evenings; have friends over and relax in the large open air palapa livingroom.
We had a wonderful time staying at your BEAUTIFUL CASA in San Pancho. Octavio and Mayela were wonderful. They were very helpful with suggestions of things to see and do in the area. Mayela cooked us a delicious mole dinner one evening. They, like the rest of San Pancho, made our stay very relaxing. We'll be back.
My husband and I stayed upstairs in the Bird of Paradise, and we could not have been more pleased with the comfort of our stay. The apartment has two bedrooms, a lovely and private patio off of the master bedroom, full kitchen with everything needed, a very large living room with surrounding windows, and the palapa roof gives it the authentic feel of a truly Mexican home. We enjoyed the pool in the beautiful backyard and garden area, as well as storage space in the garage for our surfboards. The house is located in a great and safe neighborhood with many friendly local people to visit with, and the walk through town to the beach makes it easy to keep up with all the awesome things happening in San Pancho. The owners are extremely friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable on the area. We would recommend staying here to our closest friends, and we can't wait to return ourselves.
Agree with all below about the casa, very large, numerous wonderful places to relax, hang out. Bring some books, games & movies. I'd caution for older folks the walk from the beach is a good 15 minutes easy. A 2012 review mentions option of a bus, we didn't see one in 2014. However after you leave the beach and walk through the town and the humidity gets you, then you arrive back home and jump in the pool. It was perfect to cool us down and beat the afternoon humidity. Then we'd spend the afternoon lounging and reading. The garden is lush and beautiful. The neighborhood is not quiet, be ready for roosters waking you up, the fruitas y pan y gas trucks and every other kind of truck up and down the street all day selling stuff. I felt like we got a real slice of life I just wouldn't want anyone to come here seeking quiet. Its a real town and if you are up for it its a great house. Wish we'd explored the Cultural Center more, it was often closed in the day as we went by. Adjust your time schedule because many things only come to life much later in the evening. The beach was so great, waaaay more low key than Sayulita which was a tourist trap with vendors soliciting you to buy something every 2 minutes. Pull up a chaise, they will bring you a Cerveza, enjoy the sunset. When you want excitement Sayulita was a fun 20 minute bus ride away. Plenty of expats on the bus to help make sure you get on the right one. No need for a car at all. All in all a really great experience for our family.
We loved the garden and pool at this rental home - access to beach was just a short walk through town - San Pancho is delightful - Octavio and Mayela were delightful property stewards - we look forward to coming back!
I agree with the other reviews - this house is comfortable, clean, beautiful, and the back yard is great. My husband and I have visited San Pancho and the next town up (Lo De Marcos) a couple of times and stayed in places we found via VRBO. We have also stayed in apts/houses while traveling in Europe. One of my biggest complaints is that the houses are usually not laid out very well. It too often feels like the owners are simply trying to maximize the sleeping areas. Which is fine if that is what you are looking for. However, I like to feel like I am in a home, like I actually could be living there. For me that is part of the reason we rent a house/apt instead of a hotel. Casa Sophia has the layout and feel of someone's home - not just a vacation rental. My favorite room was the office (what a treat to have a dedicated office while on vacation) and my husband's fave was the palapa room upstairs. We both enjoyed having an actual living room overlooking the fabulous backyard.
At first I wasn't sure I would like the location since we had previously stayed closer to the beach. However, this time we rented a car so we weren't about the distance. It turned out that we didn't use the car at all in town (only for going to other towns). Each time we went to the beach we took a different route and we saw so much of San Pancho that we didn't even know existed. I also liked that if we did want to ride the bus it was a very short walk.
On top of how much we loved this house, the owner was extremely easy to work with and everything was exactly as it should be in renting a vacation home - no stress, no problems, perfect house, and a great location.
We had the great fortune to stay at Casa Sophia for a month. Had to thank Jane and John for buying the place and then renting it to us! Loved it. Now if the report is too glowing we won’t get space again so I’d better be low key! It is overseen by wonderful managers as well as helpers 2 times a week in the form of gardener and maid who are efficient and helpful. A person could get spoiled. I had a bit of work so the Wi-Fi in the office was a blessing. The home in general was so much more than we had imagined from the photos. Well kept, better than average décor. Oh, if you stay home to eat and are not used to gas-light the oven while the button is depressed. Took a week to figure that out-just me! We felt like we were living in the “Secret Garden” and spent our home time out side. How lovely it all was.
This is the community we were looking for: Integrated, safe, very friendly, many social activities for such a small town (pop. about 2000). The Casa is at the beginning of town so you are only a short walk to one of the many little produce markets if you forgot something when the vendor came by. It is a very indigenous town in the early hours, 7ish, the roosters start strutting their stuff. Just close the bedroom door if you’re not ready to strut your stuff! The Vendors for produce, wonderful produce- start about 8. Fresh Juice daily was how we began the day! It is about a 15 min. walk to the beach since you tend to dawdle a bit looking at everything you pass! The cost of living is wonderfully low. Entre Amigos the children’s organization is really great for Spanish classes with Julie-excellent teacher. They have a library of English books too but then there are good ones in the house too. Can’t think of a thing that was forgotten when the house was lovingly put together. Thank You so Much! Carol n Doug
My husband and I stayed here in February 2012 with our 5 year-old daughter and we were so happy that we chose this home. It is as beautiful as the pictures indicate and even roomier than I had anticipated. The house is very clean and well-cared for. The backyard garden is an absolute paradise. The rooms are comfortable and nicely decorated. The owners keep the place free of clutter but stocked with essentials for guests plus a few extras like an interesting library to browse and tasteful artwork and handicrafts to enjoy. The kitchen is well-appointed and includes lovely Mexican ceramic dishes and glassware. For the price we felt we really scored in terms of luxury and quality. At night we did have to get used to the neighborhood noises (mostly from dogs and roosters). But, we appreciated being in a "real" neighborhood with a mix of vacation homes and local residents as opposed to the more exclusive resort areas along the beach and north of town. Seen from the street, Casa Sophia appears handsome and secure, but also subtle and understated. It blends in well with its surroundings and only reveals its true charms when you enter. The house worked well for us with our daughter, however the balcony railings are kind of low so if you have rambunctious youngsters you might feel a bit nervous upstairs.
Entre Amigos is a non-profit bi-lingual community center in San Pancho, where you can take classes in yoga, Spanish, dance, or enjoy their art festivals and lecture series. Children can take art classes, use the children's library, or learn dance and theater. There is live theater, Cirque de Soleil performances by local children, and live music almost every night at cafes and restaurants in the village.
Every Tuesday morning, a farmers market takes place in the plaza where you can find organic produce, food, crafts and music.
Regional soccer matches are played in town almost every week and international horse polo matches will begin in 2016.
