Beautiful country location just a few miles west of Custer, South Dakota. Experience the serenity of the Black Hills minutes away from Mount Rushmore National Monument and Custer State Park. Hike the hills and enjoy the views and the local wildlife! Access to National Forest is just a few steps away!
This was our first trip to South Dakota and we wanted to find a comfortable place to stay that was central to all we wanted to see in the Black Hills...this cabin was absolutely perfect! And added to the comfort we were looking for, it was also beautiful! It had everything we needed for our 11-night stay and was a great retreat from the business of our sight seeing!
We have 4 young children and they were thrilled to play with the Foosball table downstairs and to explore the surrounding property. We loved sitting on the porch, watching the beautiful birds and deer and listening to the only sound...the wind through the pines. One night there was a fantastic lightening storm and we just sat on the couch in the living room and watched the light show behind the mountain in front of the cabin...much better than television!
The cabin had all the supplies we needed and then some. All we had to do was run the 10 minutes into town to purchase our groceries. There were board games and movies for our enjoyment. The cabin was also very clean.
It is located just minutes from downtown Custer and the entrance to Custer State Park. It is in a perfect location to see many of the sites the Black Hills has to offer, the furthest we drove was about 1.5 hours to Spearfish Canyon. We went the back way through Wyoming and enjoyed the scenery. We also enjoyed the golf course located right across the street from the cabin.
The owners were great to work with and made sure everything was to our liking. We would definitely return to Lois and Gaylen's cabin if we are so blessed to return to SD!
Thank you for sharing your cabin and making our trip a very memorable one!

This was our second stay at the Stage Coach Trail retreat and it was just as wonderful as the first. Very clean house, lots of space to spread out and wonderful grounds to explore. The owners are very easy to work with. They provide everything you need for your trip to SD.
The town of Custer is a lovely place. We walked up and the the main street every night of our trip. The frozen yogurt store was yummy, and the rock store next to it had lots of neat things.
The Harney Peak trail is awesome. Make sure you start early. Bring at least 4 waters for every person on your trip. You may want to bring some snacks to feed the chipmunks when you reach the top. This trail is a great adventure.
We love this house and town and hope to visit again. Thank you Gaylen and Lois for sharing your beautiful home.

We had family from Missouri, Arkansas & North Carolina meet at this wonderful vacation home in Custer, South Dakota. This home allowed everyone space to visit with each other and space to spend quite time if you wanted. The highlight of the trip was my sister and I hiking up Harney Peak. It was a fantastic view from the top. The picture on the dining room wall was a great reminder of a great time. This home is a special place in the memory of our family. If you rent this home you will not be disappointed.
My wife and I decided to visit southwest South Dakota for our 25th wedding anniversary. I know, it's not the first place you think of for a 25th anniversary but I gotta say it was AMAZING! The combination of the history and things to do, places to be and people to see and THIS HOUSE made for a most memorable trip. We will be back! The house is beautiful and the posted pics don't do it justice. Also, the view is stunning. The owners really need to post a pic of their view! If you only rent one house in South Dakota make it this one! Oh yeah - the owners are really helpful and considerate and made our trip even better by providing maps and suggestions for things to do. STAY HERE!
We all loved this place from young to old. The views are awesome and it was very quiet. We were surprised at the minimal amount of bugs. The cabin was well stocked. It was nice not to have to buy everyday items. We had 3 children with us and they loved hanging out in the loft and searching for precious rocks around the cabin. Several shows were put on by the kids for the adults in the loft showing off their treasures. One day we had four deer just hanging around the cabin. We even left for a few hours and came back to them still lying in the grass. The only negative thing I can say is that the floor/steps are kind of squeaky so it was difficult to move around in the morning without making a lot of noise.
Website was 100% accurate with description of property. Cabin was 200% more than we expected.
Had initial concerns about the gravel road, but it was easy to maneuver on motorcycles.
Cabin was immaculate top to bottom, inside and out.
Kitchen was well stocked with spices and basic cooking/baking products, and more small appliances than we had time to use. Enough dishes that we didn't have to run the dishwasher more than twice!
Bathrooms were filled with good (soft) towels, wonderful soaps, and 'necessaries'.
Beds were extremely zzzzzz sleepable, and closet space enviable.
Furnishings were (too) comfortable, and house was easy to cool. Decor was perfect (especially the two pictures in the guest bath!)
Games and books were a bonus, and movies in family room a great idea, even though we didn't have time to watch any - we were too busy sitting on the deck watching sunsets and wildlife.
Truly appreciated the gas grill, garage for our motorcycles, and turbinado sugar.
Have already recommended this cabin to others, and hope to return some day soon.
We did not get a chance to eat in Custer, but had our eye on a couple of spots that looked great. The two grocery stores were more than adequate, and the manager at the laundromat was a great help with local information, and how to correctly fold a tee shirt to fit inside a motorcycle saddlebag :)
This was our first experience renting a vacation house. The owners were wonderfully patient and helpful, and made the process a snap.
Our only request is that the owners totally disregard one guest's comment to add internet access to the home...there is nothing like an 'unplugged' vacation, especially in this wonderful home!
