High on High Cotton
Review Submitted: April 13, 2010
Date of Stay: April 2010
My family of 4 (including a 6 yo and 3 yo) just returned from 10 days at High Cotton. We had a fabulous time. The property and beach were both spectacular.
The property is very much as described on the website and in the pictures, although it is certainly more beautiful in person. There was no high speed internet access and my Blackberry didn't get reception at the house. Not a complaint, just an observation for those that might feel the need to be more connected.
The house is older, but it has everything you need, all is in good working order, and it is kept spotless by the Housekeeper, Nola. Both the house and grounds are very kid friendly. The house is surrounded by well maintained grounds and the gardener even raked the beach in front of the house each morning to remove any seaweed that may have drifted in overnight. Most days we had the beach virtually to ourselves.
Nola, the Housekeeper, is a delightful lady. She cooked breakfast every morning and took very good care of us.
Nat was very responsive and pleasant to deal with and she was very honest in her responses to my questions about the property. She was also able to send more photos of the property.
I would definitely recommend this property to a friend as long as they understand that Eleuthera is not for everyone. If you are looking for ultra-modern, all-inclusive, non stop action, then this is not the place for you. If you appreciate life at a different pace, enjoy interacting with genuinely friendly locals, enjoy spending time in a place of natural beauty even if it lacks some of the conveniences of home, and can make your own fun, then you will really enjoy this place.
The nearest town (a 10 minute drive) is Rock Sound which has a couple of liquor stores and the best stocked grocery store on the island. There is also a fun fish fry on Friday night. Be sure to visit the Ocean Hole to feed the fish and see the turtles. Enjoy lunch or dinner overlooking the water at Four Points Marina.
If you feel like a bit of a drive, take a day trip North to the beaches at Ten Bay or further North to Alabaster Bay where the water is calm, shallow, and the color of Bombay Saphire Gin. Perfect for kids of all ages. There is a very pleasant hotel right on the beach at Alabaster Bay (Cocodimama) which is great for lunch.
But make sure you save plenty of time for relaxing on the fabulous beach at High Cotton.
I would happily have stayed a lot longer than 10 days.
