It could have been great, but...

Let me start with the pros. The view is gorgeous and the deck is secluded and shaded (this in itself is worth at least one star). The house is pet-friendly and spacious with ample seating for both lounging and dining. The beds are very comfortable, and the location can't be beat for those of us living in DC (only 1.5 hours away tops). Finally, the owners were lovely to work with and very accessible.
The cons, however, will keep us from going back next year. First, we were greeted by at least two MICE the first night. They scurried unencumbered around the kitchen and we noticed "evidence" of them everywhere (whatever you do, DO NOT use the toaster...).
Second, there were many active spiders and their webs throughout the house, which gave us pause when thinking about when the place was last truly cleaned. The deck hadn't been swept for seasons, it seemed, and there were many more LARGE spiders/webs on the exterior - not to mention a small but growing hornet nest (which we promptly removed).
Third, there was only one air conditioner in the upstairs hallway, so the bedrooms were never really "cool" and we all slept with fans and the doors open for ventilation.
Finally, there are no window coverings anywhere in the house. This includes in the bathrooms and bedrooms. Especially for the bedroom that overlooks the pier, I recommending bringing large trash bags to cover the windows if you need a semi-dark sleeping environment. And the eastern exposure floods the rooms in light very early in the morning...
Despite these things, we had a great weekend, but we are all pretty laid back with good senses of humor. That said, if you're a stickler on cleanliness, critters, or privacy, this might not be the place for you.
Owner's Response: Hi Kate,
First, we're sorry you had trouble at the house. We really wish you had called us immediately about the pest problem, we would have dealt with it right away. We are always available to help our renters with any needs, concerns, or emergencies, though we hope they won't have any!
To our future guests: rest assured that by the end of THIS WEEK we are getting an exterminator in to deal with any unwanted "guests", and that we anticipate a pest free house before anyone else moves in. We are committed to making sure there are no mice in the property. The odd insect here and there is to be expected (it is a rural area, after all), but we will bug bomb this week as well to make sure there aren't any critters taking up permanent residence.
We have purchased a new toaster and will replace the old toaster this week, and are looking into getting blinds and window A/C units for the bedrooms.
We encourage anyone with questions or concerns about this review to contact us, we will be happy to discuss the steps we are taking to fix the problems mentioned above.
Thank you!
