Location very serene, full of wildlife- the best part of this house is the location. We saw moose almost every day from the dock, lots of loons on lake, even came across black bear. Weather was lousy at first, furniture not as comfortable for lots of time inside, although we loved the extensive reading library and the piano. Other than some older, worn furniture, and the smell of moth balls (dissipates with opening the windows) house itself seems new and is very clean. The screened in porch has nice views and is a great place for early morning coffee and a book, or late-afternoon painting by the family artist (easel not included!).
There is a local general store in Sandwich and in Holderness, with more shopping and a movie theater in Meredith (on Lake Winnepesaukee), about 25 min away. Center Harbor fun as well, with neat beading/jewelry-making shop, and best restaurant in area- Canoe's. Several marinas with boat rentals available on Squam, and we did go on Lake Winnepesaukee for a couple of days as well.
With good weather we were able to enjoy the quiet beauty outside, and the lake is absolutely gorgeous. Especially in the morning, often so quiet we sometimes wouldn't see another boat for hours. Kids had fun snorkelling among rocks, looking for fish, and exploring Bowman's Island. Some great fishing, too. Hiking trails abound. Locals very friendly and helpful, really nice small-town character. Owner very knowledgeable about history of Squam area, very helpful and available for questions. We left wanting to stay longer. Lake is a kayaker's paradise, but also for anyone looking for a quiet, peaceful lake in natural surroundings.
We would recommend this place to our friends, and would rent it again ourselves.
