About Sharon

My husband and I grew up near the mountains in Pennsylvania and spent our childhoods hiking, fishing, and camping. When we vacationed in Gateway Mountain we loved the natural surroundings and breathtaking views that were all around us. We decided to purchase this vacation home so that we could revisit the beauty and tranquility of the mountains whenever possible without the hassle of hotels or condominiums.

Sharon purchased this cabin in 2008

Why Sharon chose Old Fort

Gateway Mountain is our quiet, relaxing home away from home. The developers kept the natural beauty of the mountains while providing Gateway residents and visitors with the security of a gated community. Our home is within a short drive to beautiful Asheville, NC which provides plenty of year round activities for everyone in our family.

What makes this cabin unique

Gateway Mountain has many areas to hike, fish, swim, nature watch, and explore. It is also conveniently located so that in a short drive you can get to Lake Lure, Chimney Rock Park, Asheville, Black Mountain, the Blue Ridge Parkway, Linville Caverns, Granfather Mountain, Little Switzerland, Catawba Falls, and other areas which offer a variety of year round activities.

Wonderful vacation

This is a beautiful home with a wrap around porch. When you go through the gate the roads can be a tad bit steep and slightly narrow but totally worth it. I went with my fiancé and two good friends and we had a blast. The waterfall is absolutely beautiful and I highly recommend this house!

We loved our time here! The cabin itself was beautiful, the views of the mountain from all angles was incredible, and it had pretty much everything you would need in terms of linens, kitchen supplies, etc. It's a great place to unplug from the world and get away. Downtown Asheville is only about an hour away and there are plenty of beautiful hikes within 40 minutes (highly recommend Graybeard Mountain if you're outdoorsy). I'm keeping this place in mind for future trips.

Great cabin. Tough location.

  • 4 of 5
Let me start with that the cabin is just beautiful! It is great for a small family or 1-2 couples. The location might be an issue depending on what you are planning to do. The gated community is very easy to find however, once you enter the gate it gets very tricky (easier to get in than out).*It would be so helpful if the community had 'to gate' signs at each of the turns* If you are planning to go to Asheville everyday this might be a problem as it takes 45+ minutes and its very easy to get lost getting out (we did twice with the maps). I recommend stopping at the grocery store before you get there because traveling the roads at night requires a lot of attention. Also the only staple item there is toilet paper and sugar. No paper towels, salt & pepper, etc. We were very glad we took my husbands 4x4 truck because otherwise we would not have made it in my CRV. The roads were wet and very slick. I say 4x4 for wet, ice, and snowy roads. Great stay if you just want to hang in a cabin for a few days!

Nice, but call before you go!

  • 4 of 5
The cabin was nice and peaceful. We were not able to get up the driveway despite multiple attempts, making loading and unloading quite difficult. It is at a fairly steep incline and you DO need 4 wheel drive. We didn't find out the fireplace was not working until AFTER we arrived. Extremely disappointed that we were not notified ahead of time as this was one of the amenities that was an absolute must for us. I understand things break, but in the event that you can not fulfill one of the amenities at your property, you should call.

The directions and instructions were great, but the driveway tore my Hyundai Tuscan up. There were holes and ruts that bounced us into the ditch. We had to back, back down the drive without sliding off the other side. We got a running start and finally made it up. Thank God I didn't bring the Accord as planned . We would had to left it at the bottom of driveway. There was no tv in the den so we couldn't watch television. One of our girls couldn't climb up to the loft. Careful on the steps. They are very slick. I was wearing socks and I bounced all the way down. No blinds made it tough to sleep after daybreak. Iace maker doesn't work so we had to buy ice. Other than these things, it was gorgeous. I don't like to complain, but I think feedback helps correct issues. Our friends booked for December, and we alerted them to drive 4x4. Thank you for allowing is to share your home.

If you're looking for seclusion...

If you're looking for seclusion...
  • 5 of 5
This cabin is FAR BEYOND beautiful! We were all amazed at the detail and authenticity of the walls and ceiling. The dark knots that are simply littered within the wood wall and ceiling beams were hypnotic. The pictures on this site attempt to portray the cabin beauty...but you really have to see the home for yourself.

With the view provided just off the wrap around deck, we were able to take in the multi-colored landscape. The only homes were able to see from the cabin were those situated wayyyyy up in the higher elevations far away. We all noted how glad we were that we stayed at THIS cabin and not those in the clouds :-)

Regarding the roads leading to the cabin... we had absolutely no issue. My wife and I drove a V-6 Sedan, but my brother and his fiancée drove a 4 cylinder sedan. Neither of us had any issues getting up the final hill to reach the cabin. Although... I can certainly see how it would prove difficult in more inclement weather. We were blessed with great weather.

One important note: PLEASE, PLEASE follow Sharon's directions to the letter! They were absolutely pinpoint, spot on! Trust me, you WILL NOT find the cabin without her directions. A testament to the seclusion of this dream cabin!

We all had only ONE complaint for the duration of our trip: We didn't see any visitors (deer). I was so hoping to get a glimpse of the four-legged beauties... but it didn't work out for us. So, I guess I would say more of a disappointment than a complaint :-)

The bottom line is there was NOTHING to complain about with this beautiful cabin. Most amazing is that it is offered at such a steal of a rental price!! Thanks for allowing us to enjoy a fantastic weekend in your beautiful home with the magnificent view!
