The Perfect Getaway Cottage

If you are hesitant in choosing a vacation cottage off the internet, then stop your search and book your vacation at this cottage. We found it to be truly the perfect getaway cottage. The location could not be better. There is a nice park a few steps across the quiet road which leads to a beautiful sandy beach on Lake Michigan. It is just minutes from Saugatuck and great restaurants, fun shopping, nice state parks and four lane highways to take you anywhere you want to go around Michigan. Don't miss the pies at Cranes - we visited there every evening for our dessert! We spent part of our days tracking down Frank Lloyd Wright houses in Michigan and hiking in well maintained state parks with Lake Michigan beaches. Returning to the cottage was like returning home. The cottage is clean, cozy, relaxing, homey and warm feeling. It is stocked with everything you need for your visit. The screened in porch is a wonderful bonus. We enjoyed sitting out there watching the squirrels. Susan, the owner, is a joy! She is pleasant and prompt in answering questions. We are looking forward to our return visit next year!

This really is our home away from home and we know what it's like when you get in after a long drive so we try to provide a few basics to get folks started. We've also done vacation rentals here and abroad and know what it's like when you get into a new area, so we try to provide as much information as we can - especially our personal recommendations for the area. We're fortunate to have a great cleaning person who keeps tabs on things, too. And it doesn't hurt that the area is just plain gorgeous to boot!

Everything We Hoped For

We have rented numerous vacation houses from the Georgia coast to the California coast and this was by far the nicest and well-appointed. As avid cooks, we really appreciated the completely outfitted kitchen with good/sharp knives, ample glassware, dishes, silverware, towels and pot and pans. We brought boxes of supplies from home and ended up not having to use a thing. Also, all the linens and bedding are top-notch. The owner’s love for this house is quite apparent in all its appointments.

The weather was perfect for our stay. Most of our time was spent on the beach but we also enjoyed kayaking on the Kalamazoo River and from the put-in down the road and visiting the orchards and nearby farmer's markets. We had a group of 4 deer visit the screened porch one morning.

This is a beautiful, peaceful retreat with all the amenities that make a vacation a true vacation.

Even better than we expected!

This cottage was absolutely perfect. There was everything we could ask for to make our stay comfortable. The decor is lovely and cottage is so clean and well maintained. It truly felt like home. Susan provided all of the essentials including beach gear and bicycles so we only had to bring our clothes and food. Each morning we enjoyed our coffee on the beautiful screened in porch sorrounded by the sights and sounds of nature...it truly was heaven. Then our days were filled with fun at the beach and bike rides and shopping. There is so much to do and see. The location was perfect for us and our two boys not to mention the frog pond was a favorite for them! After taking in the amazing sunsets over Lake Michigan, we played games or read books (also provided) which came in handy on the few rainy days. Our visit was wonderful and we would highly recommend this cottage. You won't be disappointed!!

The Owl's Nest had all the amenities of home. It's a peaceful sanctuary in the woods but only a few minutes walk to the beautiful beach of Lake Michigan. Kids and dogs loved it too! Saugatuck and Douglas are only a 10 minute drive with tons of fun shops, bars and restaurants. Perfect for those not so sunny days.

Wonderful woodsey hideaway

Our time at the Owl’s Nest was a little slower than we anticipated since I broke my leg while packing the car to come on vacation! My partner was also in a walking cast (same leg as mine)… “The Gimpy Girls Go On Vacation!”

When we arrived we were a little downtrodden and tired. We found the Owl’s Nest drive and began making our way down the long beautiful wooded lane. It was lush and green. The house greeted us with bright adirondack chairs on a lovely little porch.

We entered to find a beautiful home decorated with very high quality items and everything…and I mean everything we could possibly need to have a super time. We even found a salad spinner for the greens we bought at the Holland farmers market! I don’t even have one of those at my own home.

The one thing that is always iffy when vacationing is the sleeping conditions. Here the beds were a dream. We slept better here than at home. There were plenty of pillows for my broken leg to rest on and we found plenty of blankets to curl up in on cool nights.

The very very best part of this rental is the beautiful screened in porch. Our cat, Sophie thought she had died and gone to heaven. We agreed. Morning coffee out there was pure joy. We heard birds (two very bossy crows were there to greet) and saw deer almost every day either in the a.m. or p.m. Chipmunks kept Sophie entertained for hours.

We were there on a very cool and wet spring. The mosquitoes were everywhere… so bug spray became a needed accessory. The beach is very close and probably super accessible if you’re not in walking cast! The lighting was a little on the dim side in the house but we agree that we are ridiculous “light” people. ?

Susan, the owner is a gem. She gave tons of local information and was very receptive. We stayed an extra day and found her easy to get a hold of to get permission and very friendly. We want to adopt her into our family or at least have her as our favorite neighbor.

If you’re looking for a great summer rental right next to Saugatuck and near Holland… this is it! We enjoyed the Pie Company and the crazy School House antique store towards Fennville.
