Wind sports:
South Padre Island is known for its warm water and steady winds. It is ideal for beginner and expert wind riders alike. The North Flats is a private wind/kite boarding beach on the Laguna Madre. Chest deep water and side shore winds make it ideal for perfecting your new tricks or learning a new sport. The Pavilion on the south end of the island is a popular launch for 6 mile down winder rides in the Gulf of Mexico. Several companies provide lessons, supervised rentals and downwind pickups. Come down for the spring and fall for the best wind, but it can blow all year.
36 miles of white sand beach:
South Padre Island boasts 36 miles of white sand beach along the Gulf of Mexico. Walking the shores, beach combing and building extravagant sand castles are family activities that all can enjoy. The warm water is perfect for beginner boogie boarding and the more adventurous can catch waves off the pier on their long boards. There are a few surf shops on the island for rentals. The northern parts of South Padre Island are accessible by car and very popular for weekend BBQs. Fish the warm waters of the Gulf from the shore and enjoy the bounty of the waters.
