TASTEFULLY RESTORED 16TH C. COUNTRY HOUSE FULL OF CHARACTER AND HISTORY

Fivizzano House Rental Photos and Description

2 double bedrooms (1 ensuite bathroom), 1 twin, 1 main bathroom, sleeps 6/7

LA CANONICA, a listed building dating from 1501, has been recently restored to a high standard in accordance with the requirements of the Dept. of Fine Arts. Situated in a quiet medieval hamlet it is within easy reach of the beautiful Gulf of Poets, the stunning coastline of the Cinque Terre, the ski resort of Cerreto. The walled city of Lucca which Prince Charles described as the most beautiful in the world is just a train journey away. LA CANONICA is the perfect place to relax. There is a peaceful garden and patio, incl pizza oven, with hillside views. But if you want a bit more activity, there are lovely hikes nearby, two swimming pools a few kms away, the thermal baths at Equi Terme, riding, musical evenings in summer, a weekly market in nearby Fivizzano, not to mention the many 'sagras' or food festivals held locally. Good food, good wine, a quiet patio and garden in which to relax. La Canonica is the ideal location. The perfect escape.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in 'La Canonica'. Our favourite time of the day was having a barbecue on the patio enjoying the sunset and evening sounds. The house is just lovely and I am so pleased we discovered it on the net. We enjoyed exploring this part of Tuscany, and Lucca and the bicycle ride was our favourite location. We had a great time and have many lovely memories. The Fenton Five, July 2012

La Canonica provides an idyllic rural retreat. It is full of character, well kept and with a very peaceful, secluded garden. Julie provides a very warm welcome and is a reliable source of local information. It is an ideal location for those wishing to get away from life's hurly-burly, with only the sound of birdsong being audible. It is a little off the main tourist routes, but is only just over an hour by autostrada to Lucca. The nearest coast boasts Lerici, Portovenere-a World Heritage site -and the Cinque Terre fishing villages, a must-see visit by boat. We also enjoyed a trip to the famous Carrara marble quarries nearby which included a mini-bus ride into the mountain workings - fascinating. Our favourite restaurant was the Controvento , 10 minutes from the house, full of locals and with a very friendly staff, and very reasonably priced. David and friends June 2012

Guest feedback: 'We were extremely impressed..it was perfect. We loved everything about the the house...Debico was fantastic....there were deer in the garden - what more could we ask. We would like to stay there again.' Brian, Bristol.

Cozy and quite house away from everyday life

  • 5 of 5
We really enjoyed staying at La Canonica. The hospitality of Julie is absolutely great, we found a personal letter on the desk and a welcome drink in the fridge when we arrived.

It is thought on everything: The kitchen is well equipped and clean, nearly everything is available, even washing liquid, aluminium foil, some herbs, salt and pepper and cooking books in English. It's not often to find that in holiday homes.
The stone oven is working very well, we did our own Pizzas several times. There's a nice place outside to sit for having meals or relaxing in sun chairs. A lot of fire wood for the oven or the barbecue is available, also very useful if the evenings are a bit colder and a fire is needed.
For going to the beach enough towels for that can be found in the house. And a good collection of brochures from touristic places nearby is existing and can be reviewed.

But the best thing for stressed people: It is absolutely quite around, no traffic or aircraft noise and nobody can see the garden directly. Be away from everything...
What to say else than: We had a fantastic stay and a big Thank You to Julie!

Tuscan delight - character and comfort.

  • 5 of 5
This is a beautifully restored Tuscan property - spacious and cool indoors in the heat of summer, with plenty of space inside and out (open and shaded) to make the most of its beautiful location. The home is well-equipped and well-presented, and the owner is very helpful and considerate, offering a chilled bottle of prosecco as a welcome in the fridge and many personal recommendations to suit your needs. There are plenty of characterful eateries within easy reach if your budget allows and the property itself is excellent value for money.

Excellent holiday again in Tuscany

  • 5 of 5
We have visited this area a few times but always find something new to do. La Canonica is an excellent place to use as a base for excursions. We visit the Cerreto ski resort and climbed to the top, with marvellous views. Visited Bagnone, Lucca (by train from Aulla station), Maranello (the Ferrari museum) - if you wish to have a tour of the Ferrari workshop you will need to book it as we couldn't go around this, but did know in advance it was booked, but enjoyed the museum too (plus the cafe is very reasonable too!!). Visited a lovely reservoir in the mountains, with horses grazing, and a great trail. Lots of picnic areas around this area. Went to Sarzanna and also had numerous trips to Fivizzano for drinks and ice cream, also one of the cafes (not the ice cream one) has free internet access. Plus a swim in the river at Pallerone. We also used the pizza oven (recommend putting flour on the large pizza shovel so it comes off), and had plenty of BBQs.

I don't think the swimming pool was open but we went to Lerici which is a lovely sea side resort - need to be there early to get parked etc.

Julie left us some limoncella and some home made jam which was really nice.

This is a wonderful area to visit and we wish we were still here.

A week in peace and beauty

  • 4 of 5
The most beautiful house! Newly decorated in the typical tuscan colours. The weather was great so we spent most time outside - baking pizzas in the owen, while watching lizzards catching ants! It is a peaceful place with no tourists, neither in the hamlet nor in Fivizzano - it seems so authentic. We would have been up in the mountains, but the access was forbidden due to the risk for earthquakes, so we have to come back another time. The price for staying away from tourist is the lack of natural water to swim in - plus you have to like driving in mountains! Go there!

lovely, peaceful place to destress

  • 5 of 5
We throughly enjoyed our time at the house in Debico, after travelling for the last 5 weeks it was nice to relax and enjoy the peace of the surrounding countryside and hills.

The house is very comfortable and well fitted out, we would be very happy to recommend it to our friends.

Great base for exploring northern Tuscany

  • 4 of 5
La Canonica is a great base from which to explore northern Tuscany. We (me, my wife and three adult children) had a great week visiting Lucca, Pisa, Sienna, Florence and Verona; oh, and we squeezed a session at the beach too! Starting and ending the day in the peace and tranquility of the cottage in Debico near Fivizzano (well worth a visit - handy supermarket and restaurants, banks etc) was just perfect. We also managed to successfully cook some home-made pizzas in the outside pizza oven. The house is well equipped, including patio furniture and sun loungers / reclining chairs. We had a lovely welcome from Julie with home-made liqueur, wine, plums and flowers. I'd definitely recommend the cottage for value-for-money accommodation with peace and quiet thrown in. We also felt it would make a perfect spot for really getting away from it all; even as a retreat house!

Fivizzano, 5 kms away, is a mediaeval walled town with its famous square surrounded by cafes and bars. Here there are supermarkets, shops, chemists and all services. Tues. is market day. Aulla, 13 kms. away is larger with a good choice of supermarkets. The area of the Lunigiana is dotted with villages, castles and forts. Just 2 kms from La Canonica is the Soliera/Rometta train line which chugs its way through beautiful mountain scenery down to the old city of Lucca. Alternatively head to the coast and hike some of the Cinque Terre coastline which is breathtakingly beautiful, visit the beach at Lerici (Blue Flag award indicating clean water, pristine sands and a well organised beach) or wander around La Spezia, and on to the UNESCO heritage town of Porto Venere just a few kms. beyond. The Gulf of Poets should not be missed. Pisa is just over an hour away and Florence a bit further - 2+ hours.

There are some very good restaurants and 'agriturismos' locally serving organic food.

Other Activities: skiing 40 mins.
