COMMENTS FROM OUR GUESTS:
'In our 48 years renting dozens of vacation places from Maine to SW Florida, we recall none that approached perfection to the degree that Cold Mountain Retreat has. In all respects, it is magnificent with a fantastic setting, amazing interior decorating and attention to every small detail...
The O'Connors, August 2010
'We have spent six wonderful weeks in this lovely and peaceful home on Cold Mountain. We love the Waynesville area. Some favorites are:
Summer Solstice on Waterrock Nob, Two full moons--so bright that we could see up the mountain from the bedroom window, Starry, starry nights; 64-74 degrees on the deck every morning; fireworks in Maggie Valley;swimming holes and waterfalls.....
The Hazens June-July 2011
'Once again we enjoyed being in your lovely, comfortable home. Dad fell in love with the butterfly bushes and the butterflies that arrived each morning. We loved kicking back on the deck, grilling meals, and exploring Waynesville. The Mast General Store is a favorite. Next year we plan to bring more of the gang. The Sullivans and Kennedys, September 2009.
'A cloud in our living room! We could look down on the clouds and one even came inside exciting our children. Staying in your home has been the highlight of our year. Thank you for all the thoughtful extras you have provided.' Smiths, June 2009.

DESCRIPTION OF OUR COLD MOUNTAIN RETREAT: The red front door entry entry welcomes guests at the ground level. Stairs lead up from the entry hall to the main floor of the chalet style home. There you will find the great room with fireplace, kitchen and dining, two bedrooms, a full bath with large shower, and laundry room. The expansive deck surrounds the great room and has additional entry stairs.
Upstairs is the master suite. The large bedroom has a king-size bed; 11-foot window seat (big enough for 2 children to sleep); sitting area, desk and views in three directions. Besides two mountainside views, there is a view through two interior windows over the great room and out to the mountain ranges in the distance. Truly spectacular. It feels like being in a tree house. The master bath has a double vanity, a separate shower and toilet, and a Jacuzzi tub.
The ground level recreation studio expands the house to 2600 square feet. The studio level has its own fireplace and a furnished galley kitchen. Rob Dulaney (behind the Elk antler) and Barbara Bishop are high school sweethearts who married 26 years later. Rob is a consulting engineer and Barbara is a marriage and family therapist, consultant, educator and retreat leader. Her practice, Soul Focus Resources, is in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL. We enjoy our professions, and we also love spending time with our three grown children and four grandchildren. Traveling is on our list of pleasures. One of our goals is to hike in all the major national parks in the United States. In 2009 we explored the Grand Canyon. In 2010 we explored Mesa Verde. National Park in Colorodo. In Sept. 2010 we hiked in Scotland and England while exploring Celtic Christian sites. In May of 2011, Barbara spent two weeks on pilgrimage in Jordan and Israel. In May we will visit the Joshua Tree National Park in California. The Great Smoky Mountain National Park is our frequent hiking ground since it is so close to Cold Mountain Retreat.
Barbara Bishop or Rob Dulaney purchased this chalet in 2006
After vacationing on Cold Mountain for more than a decade, we knew we loved repeat visits to the area. There is so much to do here that it is impossible to do it all. Rather than continuing to rent someone else's vacation home, we decided we wanted to build our own. Fortunately, some acerage was available for purchase. In 2005 and 2006 we built our Cold Mountain Retreat. It is truly our home in the mountains. Since we aren't here year round, we love sharing our home with others.
While in the mountains, try the adventures of zipline canopy tours, hot air ballooning or helicipter site-seeing as ways to see the mountains from above! Cold Mountain Retreat offers the best of quiet mountain life and the advantages of lovely small towns like Waynesville and Maggie Valley. For city advantages, Asheville is only a 25 to 30 minute drive. Parks, hiking trails and wilderness areas surround us. Much can be explored by car and the hiking is unequaled. In Waynesville there is the Haywood Regional Recreation Center that has indoor heated pools including a children's pool and slide area. In addition, there are raquetball & basketball courts, yoga classes, aerobic classes, indoor walking and jogging lanes, locker rooms, and much more for year round use.
Yes, we stayed here for six wonderful weeks in this lovely and peaceful home on Cold Mountainl. We love the Waynesville area....Some of our favorites have been:
Summer solstice on Waterrock Nob; two full moons--so bright that we could see up the mountain from the bedroom; 64-74 degrees on the deck in the mornings; picking berries with grandkids and making fresh cobbler; fireworks in Maggie Valley; squirrel nest at eye level; butterflies as large as small birds; a hummingbird who would come eye-to-eye on the deck many mornings; lunch at Pisgah in on the Blue Ridge Parkway; and so much more.
This location offers peace, quiet, and scenic views. We had plenty of space for our family of six.
The first thing about this place was the ease of working with the owners. Rob was very quick to respond to any questions we had and gave some nice suggestions of restaurants to visit in Waynesville.
There are a lot of wonderful things about this place. The location is quiet, and although it can be a little tricky getting there, you feel at home and at peace when you are there. The home itself is extremely well built. You can see they paid very close attention to details and used great materials in building it. The downstairs is very nice with the pool table, wet bar, huge fireplace, TV and full bath. It was about 5 degrees cooler down there, which was nice during the warm days outside. Having a garage is nice if you are there during the winter.
As you go upstairs to the main level it is also very nice. The outside deck is very large and can accomodate a very large party, although our party was just the two of us. The living area is also huge and open. The acoustics in there is really nice so when you are playing music or have the TV on you can hear it all over the house.
The kitchen was really well stocked with pots, pans, utensils, and pretty much whatever you might need, although we were glad we brought our own Keurig.
The master suite was spacious and well-appointed. It was easy to see how two small kids could sleep on the window seat because it was very wide. The room had a nice sitting area to read a book or work a crossword puzzle. And the windows that allowed you to look out into the valley was a really nice design detail.
There were a few negatives but nothing that would keep us from giving it 5 stars or from coming back. If you are a sports fan and expect to watch ESPN during the fall football season, you won't get it here. The TV in the living room was relatively small for the large space it was in. If you are in the kitchen preparing a meal and want to see the screen it's not easy to see. The TV downstairs is also small and an older model, but again, your not here just to watch TV. The only other thing was the gas grill was left unclean by the previous renter. Not the owners fault. Looked like someone grilled some fish and left the skin on the grill. Couldn't find a wire brush to clean it off.
Overall, this was one of the nicest places we've stayed. It's new, it's modern, it's well equipped, and it's the kind of place you can enjoy by being away from it all or you can venture 20 minutes into town and do a lot of things.
Our family stayed here for almost a week this past summer and had a wonderful time. Peaceful, relaxing and beautiful house with excellent views! Kids enjoyed being able to shoot pool, the space to run around and play outside, and they loved the window seat "bed" in the master bedroom. It was nice to be able to cook sometimes and not have to eat out every meal. The owners are helpful and easy to communicate with. Would definitely recommend this location and next time we are in the area, will hope it is available for us to rent.
We stayed here for a week at Christmas. It was a bit of a steep drive to reach the home, but the views are very nice. Our family included 6 adults, a toddler and a dog. There was plenty of room for our family to spread out and relax. The kitchen had all the utensils and equipment we needed to prepare our meals. Historic Waynesville is about a 15 minute drive. It is a quaint town with lots of little shops and restaurants. We would like to return when the weather is a little warmer....spring or fall. Thanks for sharing your mountain home with us!
The home is a wonderful getaway for a family wanting to enjoy the NC mountains. The view is wonderful. A great place to disconnect for a few days.
This is our 3rd stay. My grandchildren and my husband and I love coming here. The spaciousness, the amenities, and location are ideal. The views from the living room and "grand" master bedroom are tranquil and breathtaking. This is truly a place where you feel comfortable and are able to relax. The grandkids went tubing in Maggie Valley. snowboarding in Cattaloochee, spent the the day at The Fun Depot in Asheville, played at the public park in Waynesville, and hiked around the property. The day we left my grandson asked, "Have you booked this house for next Christmas vacation?"You could say that sums up the fun to be had here!
