Photos and Description of the Samara vacation house rental
Oceanview House - 2 Bedrooms + 1 Convertible bed - 2 Baths - (Sleeps 4-6)

Nestled in a quiet garden setting sharing the swimming pool and Rancho with Casa Mango - also available for rental. Overlooking the Pacific its just a 10 minute walk to one Costa Rica's best beaches. Air conditioning. Contact us for our web address with videos, much information and dozens of picture.

Casa Papaya is just close enough to Sámara to enjoy the services but not too close. That means less noise - especially in the evenings - and more privacy. Up off the beach means fewer bugs and cooler temperatures. You're much closer to the nature you want to see.

Casa Papaya was designed for comfort in the tropics, with private shaded terraces and air conditioning. Sea breezes keep the house cool during the day. Views of the Pacific from every room. Fully equipped kitchen. Paddle fans throughout. All windows screened. Private outdoor shower just off pool. 2 full baths. One bedroom with queen and 2nd with double pillow top mattresses. Living room with double sofa/futon. Your home away from home. Owner's live in their own home on the property year around to assist in any way possible.

The reef-protected bay provides safe swimming and snorkeling. Beginners' surfing is right in the bay, with at least 3 surf schools. World-class waves are within 1/2 hour drive.

There is abundant wildlife in the trees around the house - wake up to the roar of the Howler monkeys or the call of the green parrots as they make their twice daily pass to nesting sites up the hill or in the bamboo right on the property. There is a zip-line canopy tour just up the hill. The best birding is from the terrace in the morning.

Sámara has shops, post office, police station, doctor, pharmacist, groceries, liquor stores, internet cafes, bank, ATM and many good restaurants and 'sodas' (Tico for cafe). Choose from one of many beachfront bars and resaurants for a bite to eat or a refreshing bebida while watching the surfers.

Casa Papaya shares a 'get cool' pool and a spacious covered rancho with Casa Mango. Up the hill is Casa Gecko, the owners' home. Reserve one or two houses for an unforgettable gathering.

Samara, and all of Costa Rica, is booming. Casa Papaya is located 'away from it all', outside of town in a mixed international/Tico neighborhood. The evenings are quiet and serene, with amazing star shows and the sounds of night animals. Dawn approaches with visits from monkeys, parrots, other wildlife and maybe a neighborhood rooster. Daytime includes the occasional motorbike or truck.

For more photos and floor plans, send an inquiry via email. We have lots more information to offer: about the house, the area, the weather, what to take, what to do, etc.

About Lavae Aldrich

When we'd had enough of grey Seattle, we quit our day jobs (architect and graphic designer) and moved to Costa Rica, where we've been happily living the Pura Vida since 2006. We love the climate and beauty of this tropical environment. We love the culture and the people here. We love the rhythm of life. And we love to share it.

Lavae Aldrich purchased this house in 2000
Why Lavae Aldrich chose Samara

We fell in love with Costa Rica the first time we vacationed here - the climate, the environment, the people. After touring much of the country, we settled on a gem of a lot with expansive views. We liked being near the town of Sámara, where there are more services available each year. But we like being away from the noise and late night activity.

What makes this house unique

Within walking distance to the beach - we do it every morning with our rescued dog - our houses sit on the hillside overlooking Samara Bay. There aren't too many houses around where you can have both proximity and privacy. Close enough to head in for a night of reggae or cocktails on the beach. But on quiet mornings, the best bird-watching happens from your terrace. Fresh ocean breezes keep the houses bug-free and cool although we've recently added AC to the bedrooms.

A great time at Casa Papaya! We hope to return one day!

My husband, sister and brother-in-law and I spent a week at Casa Papaya recently and we LOVED it! It was exactly the balance between proximity to the beach/town and privacy we were looking for. The house was clean, well equipped and comfortable. Lots of windows with good screens on them let in a great breeze in the evening. The outdoor kitchen and pool were great for spending a little time relaxing at home. We had great morning coffees on the patio! View was beautiful. Monkeys often passed by in the morning and we often had some gecko friends on the ceiling of the outdoor kitchen at night while we were playing cards.
Quick walk to the beach with a super market on the way! Since the town is practically on the beach it is close as well. Many sodas (restaurants) with delicious food along the beach and in town. The beach was beautiful and not too busy (even though we were there on Easter weekend).
We were there at the peak of the dry season, which meant it was a little drier than usual, but on the up side there were practically no mosquitoes!
I would go back to Casa Papaya and Samara :)

Lovely Casa Papaya at Playa Samara

My wife and I spent a wonderful 20 days at Casa Papaya with a memorable hillside view of Samara Bay. The 10-minute walk to the beach was convenient and satisfied our need for reasonable privacy...a walk that was both a healthy exercise and a chance to observe and interact with families of howler monkeys and the occasional iguana along the way. The casa was clean and well maintained during our stay with housekeeping scheduled every few days. The owners were helpful in providing information we needed from time to time. The casa is equipped with a kitchen, which we recommend for longer stays like ours, but seaside restaurants and sodas are accessible along the beach near the town center. We would recommend the casa to family and friends, and would stay there again on a return to Playa Samara.

Great Home away from Home for Families!

This was the first time my husband and I brought our kids to Costa Rica, as well as my 79-year old grandpa. After visiting my husband's family for several days and staying with them, we were ready for our own space! While the drive was long and treacherous (unfortunately we drove in at night -- not recommended!!), it turned out to be worth it. We loved our little house! It has a small fridge, stove, coffee maker, toaster oven, blender, dishes, pots & pans, kitchen towels - basically everything you need. I loved that it had a washer & dryer, which is somewhat of a necessity with kids. The kids loved the little pool. There is also a bigger fridge outside by the pool, which was very handy for left-overs when we went out for dinner. We used the mosquito nets over the beds, which kept our bites to a minimum (there are bugs in the jungle -- apparently some people are unaware of this!!!). The house is definitely cozy; however, we had 6 people and we made it work. We let grandpa have the upstairs and I think he appreciated having his own space and own bathroom. The rest of us mainly used the outdoor shower, which is larger than the upstairs one and is located in the back where no one can see you. We also felt safe since the property has a gate that is always locked. I would definitely rent this place again. It is well-worth the money. The views were lovely and it was closer to town and the beach than I expected!

Wouldn't Recommend Casa Papaya

Wouldn't Recommend Casa Papaya

We rented Casa Papaya for the second half of our trip to Costa Rica but left after just a few hours. The house was filled with bugs and only got worse when the sun went down. The main doors to the house don’t actually seal at the floor or with each other. Several window screens weren’t secured, either, so as soon as we turned on the lights the whole place turned into an entomologist’s dream. Bugs were streaming in everywhere. There were huge spiders in the bathroom, cobwebs in the drawers and two lizards that jumped out of cupboards. Unfortunately we couldn’t close the windows as it was 85+ degrees, humid and the house has no air conditioning.

The bugs seem to be part of the experience as the two beds and futon each have bug netting. In the guest book, previous visitors recommended not walking in the house with bare feet at night due to the scorpions; one teenage guest wrote that he woke up in the morning with a scorpion on his chest.

Long story short, with my wife and three kids huddled together on the futon swatting bugs, melting in the heat and afraid to walk around the house, I handed the keys to the owners and drove back to Liberia that night to a place we’d stayed earlier. In all, we spent about four hours at Casa Papaya instead of our planned six days. Equally as disappointing was dealing with the owners afterwards, whom we found extremely insensitive and accusatory.

Fortunately, our vacation ended on a high note after finding a great villa in Playa Hermosa. There were plenty of bugs there, too, but we were able to keep most of them outside.

We are recommending Costa Rica to all our friends, but I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone.
Owner's Response: It is unfortunate that these renters gave us no opportunity to go assess the problem and fix it, even though we live on the property – the car was loaded and they were leaving when he returned the keys. We can understand a child’s discomfort with Geckos and bugs. Although, many visitors embrace Costa Rica’s biodiversity, it’s a shock to others. We have often seen a child’s initial revulsion transformed, after a good nights’ sleep, to curiosity. But the characterization that this house was a bug lovers’ dream is very unfair. The property is well screened and maintained. Please read the dozens of other positive reviews of this property, posted over many years and on many websites, for more perspective.
That said, we take our guests’ reviews seriously and we have begun a program of periodic spraying for insects and spiders around the foundation of this house.

A true gem

We spent 5 nights at Casa Papaya and it was truly amazing. The house has everything you could possibly need to have a very relaxing vacation. The views were spectacular especially from the master BR private balcony. Every morning we would sit outside watching the birds and listening to the monkeys. We cooked the majority of our meals as the kitchen was well stocked with pots, pans, etc. The Pali grocery store in town had a good variety. Steve had a great tip for fresh fish very close by at the pescaderia and we grilled fish twice during our stay. We bought fresh fruit from the vendor outside the Pali as well. We ate very well and enjoyed many, many ice cold Imperial's laying in the hammock by the pool. We took Steve's suggestion to try Playa Carillo which was an absolutely gorgeous, practically deserted beach about 5 km south of Samara. We ended up spending at least 3 hours there everyday. The rest of the time we just hung out at the pool. It was very easy to slip into a routine of relaxing. We did have a rental car and that was convenient, but one day I walked to the main part of Samara along the beach and it took around 20 minutes. We did not do much in the way of activities but my husband and daughter rented an ATV for a few hours and did some exploring and really enjoyed that. And we took the sunset hike with Samara Trails that lasted 3 hours. It was very informative and we saw lots of birds and animals and of course a beautiful sunset. Our trip was great and we will definitely plan on returning someday for a longer stay! Thank-you so much Lavae and Steve!
