Located 600 feet above the majestic Pacific Ocean, this island hideaway on the north shore of Oahu is private, cool and quiet. Placed at the end of a small road, the lush tropical setting is one acre of mature banana, avocado, and fruit trees set among gorgeous flowers and a beautiful yard. The new rock wall pool and heated spa has a soothing waterfall built in and a view of the ocean. Enjoy a glass of wine at day's end while soaking away. Completely different than the concrete towers of Waikiki, yet close enough to be accessible, the north shore of Oahu is the perfect place to enjoy Hawaii.
Our circumstances were not routine. We visited several properties in May 2014 looking for a winter rental. I was retiring, and Gale wanted to promptly start doing different things before we fell into a retirement rut doing more of the same thing. We lived here for about 6 weeks. We would’ve rented for the whole three months, but even in May others had already booked. Quiet, secure, very clean, and even private garage parking. Large, covered patio, big family room. Patio has a great view of the night sky - use night sky websites to spot planets and other formations. Because we were in practical terms living here vice vacationing, Gale prepared nearly all evening meals, and it was a treat to walk out on the lawn and pick a fresh tangerine for a snack. Wifi and Direct TV, etc., all worked, and we had no problem plugging in our Apple TV gadget. Pool and hot tub were clean and well maintained The outside shower with hot water and half bath was great for rinsing off sand. The local Foodland is well stocked, especially when you don’t need Costco sized stuff. We went to Mass at the mission church overlooking Wiamea Bay, good music and plenty of fellow visitors. We enjoyed our stay, and Carolyn is a delight to work with.
Really enjoyed our stay here. I would highly recommend this place to anyone, a quiet paradise, (if you can ignore the roosters at night. We had fun on this). The place is clean and the owner is wonderful to work with. Would go again for sure.
We had a fantastic stay at this house. We thought we wanted something on the beach, but the pool and jacuzzi and grounds of this house were so fun and beautiful that we were smitten. Our kids absolutely loved swimming in the pool. The location is amazing. Just down the hill is Sharks Cove (5 min), where we had great snorkelling. We had fun hiking Waimea Valley (10 min away), going to Waimea Beach and Haleiwa (15 min). A great store, Foodland, and Starbuck's is also just at the bottom of the hill so that was also very convenient to get a picnic lunch on our way out or breakfast supplies.
The owner greeted us warmly and gave us some fruit from her property. She was so relaxed about checking in and out times, which was really appreciated.
The house was clean and well maintained and the pictures did it justice. The bonus was that the owner was just so nice and helpful. We would like to stay here again on our next visit and would highly recommend this rental property!
We arrived on Friday 4/22/11 and greeted by the owner who walked us around the property and showed us how to use the pool and hot tub. We had the use of a garage, two BBQ pits (Charcoal and Gas), Satellite TV, wireless internet and a fully furnished 2 bed house (including washer/dryer, bath/beach towels and all kitchen utilities). The road leading to the house starts at "sharks cove" (5 min drive), Waimea Valley (10 min drive), Dole Plantation (20 min drive), Pearl Harbor/Swap Meet (40 min drive), Waikiki beach (50 min drive). All drive times are approximate. For the golfer this house is (15 min drive) from Turtle Bay, were you can play the Fazio course after 3:05 for $15 per person ($5 for juniors). The house, owner, price and location are beyond anything you can show/tell with words. My family had a great stay and being able to spread out in a two bed house instead of a hotel room was great! We will stay here again if the opportunity presents itself.
Thank you so much for allowing our family to stay in your beautiful home. After spending the day in Waikiki, Pearl Harbor, or just driving the island, your home was the perfect place to come back to. It was just the right size for our family of 4. The kids enjoyed the pool in the backyard while my husband & I enjoyed the peacefulness. We especially loved the night sky, with the stars so close. Also waking up & hearing the roosters! The drive from Honolulu to your home was an enjoyable one, while watching the pineapple fields pass by. We loved the view of the ocean while driving up to your house. Sunset Beach was definately the best place to watch the sunset!! I hope this review helps those of you thinking to stay at Carolyn's home. I would definately recommend to anyone who is planning to stay on Oahu & is looking to stay on the North Shore!!
The North Shore area is wonderfully different from Waikiki and Honolulu. The house is quiet, clean, and even it's though not on the beach you can hear the ocean. Waking up to roosters and birds is far better that hearing traffic noises from a hotel window.
The Foodland is nearby and well stocked, but if able to plan ahead you can fill the pantry for less cost especially if you are planning to spend more than a few days. Our stay was only four nights so we weren't too concerned with planning menus, but if you are really going to use the kitchen be prepared to buy all of the basics.
Driving was not difficult and Carolyn gave us excellent directions, but do allow plenty of time for traffic on one lane roads and when the surf is up!
We found a lot of things to see and do that we did not have time for so another visit to North Shore would be lovely.
Just a five minute drive down the hill is a complete supermarket and a Starbucks. Waimea Bay and Sunset beach are minutes away, home to some of the worlds best surf in the winter, and beautiful white sand beaches year around. Shark's cove and the surrounding area offers some of the best snorkeling in the islands and is a protected marine sanctuary. Summer time is perfect for scuba diving and kayaking. Watching the turtles, looking for shells and enjoying the sunsets are year round activities to be enjoyed. Many restaurants offering a variety of cuisines along with a variety of shops and art galleries are just a 15 minute drive away in historic Haleiwa town. Golf and tennis are also a 15 minute drive away at Turtle Bay.
Other Activities: shopping, kayaking, basketball, wildlife viewing, surfing, sailing, flying, golfing, hiking, mountain climbing, bicycle riding, motocross, kite surfing, swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving
