We Are Going Back

This place exceeded our expectations. The location was beautiful, the property was well-kept and had many amenities for our use. The dock and the water trampoline were listed, but we also had use of a covered picnic table for dining by the lake, and a small skiff (the grandkids loved that). You do not have to take anything except towels and bed linens, and of course your clothes. All the extras you would never take on vacation are supplied, a mixer, a food processor, blender, etc.

The Peninsula Market is very close, and Chester has a large Holiday Supermarket. Chester also has some great little shops, The Grey Squirrel has the BEST FUDGE! Buffalo Chips in Westwood has great pizza. There are many other restaurants, but we grilled most of our own food on the gas grill and ate on the huge covered porch.

The biggest entertainment for our kids and grandkids was Lake Almanor, we boated, swam, fished, sat on the dock and generally enjoyed the Lake. If you wanted to sight-see there is the drive around the Lake and Lassen Park, to name a couple things.

Last but not least the owners, Jennifer and Bob were terrific. More like a host and hostess making sure their guests were comfortable and welcome. Jennifer is an excellent baker, how do we know? There was a delicious chocolate cake waiting for us on the kitchen counter. Bob was especially patient with our grandson and showed him how to row the skiff.

Would we recommend to friends, you bet, to family, they want to go back. Of course recommending Pier 142 because we enjoyed it so much can be a 2 edged sword. We want others to enjoy, but we also want to be able to get reservations to go back. We have already made reservations for next summer and will be going for a longer time period.

We are looking forward to another great time at Pier 142.

Owner's Response: What an absolute joy to have such wonderful guests. We enjoyed every minute and are thrilled to have them back next year. What a surprise to come in after check-out to discover flowers and fudge.Sharing Pier 142 with others has been a real pleasure for Bob and I.

Highly Reccomended by this Reviwer - a VRBO Vacation Rental Owner

I bought a 1960 wooden power boat (19' Century Resorter) and, after a little research, I located the man who bought it from the original owner (which was Harrah's Tahoe). That man, Bob turns to be the owner of this vacation property. Well, of course I just had to book the property to meet Bob and to show him his old (now restored) boat that he owned almost 50 years ago!

I am happy that I did and not just because I got to meet Bob and Jennifer but because I, my wife, our adult children and our grandchildren (all ten of us) truly enjoyed our stay at their beautiful lake retreat. The property is everything they say it is and more. It was clean, comfortable and perfectly located. And where else can you rent a place and have a freshly baked chocolate cake waiting for you?! Jennifer is obviously a cook as the place is well stocked so that you can cook or bake anything!

Bob and Jennifer live nearby so, if you need anything (and I mean anything) they are nearby to help but, not so close as to be obtrusive. They made sure we were taken care of but went to great lengths to be unobtrusive. Another reviewer here described them more as "hosts" and I concur but would add that they are "perfect hosts"

We had a blast, swimming, fishing and boating on the lake, enjoying the private dock during the day and barbecuing and playing Hearts at night. Within walking distance (about 3/4 of a mile away) is the best grocery store on the lake, Wally's Peninsula Market as well a marina if you want to rent a boat, a place that makes fresh cinnamon rolls, miniature golf (Paul Bunyan Resort) and what I thought was the best restaurant on the lake, the Red Onion Bar and Grill.

I own a VRBO rental myself so I know what it takes to maintain a vacation property for the enjoyment others - in other words I'm in a position to be highly critical and I give Bob and Jennifer high marks. Book this place for your vacation, you will not regret it!

Owner's Response: Bob was thrilled to see one of his favorite boats again, after 50 years. We're so glad you located us, booked your vacation and took the maiden voyage here at Pier 142. It was a pleasure sharing our home/property with you and your family, you're welcome anytime. Thanks for taking the time to write such an incredible review, we appreciate it. Our guests are our top priority and if your happy we're happy:) Take care and enjoy the rest of the summer.
Thanks Again, Bob & Jennifer

Another wonderful week in October at Lake Almanor

My husband and I have been vacationing at Lake Almanor for a week in October since 2007. (He fishes and I do the Bizz Johnson trail races.) Although we have different hobbies, we do agree that Jennifer and Bob offer a teriffic location, hospitality and special touches to make our trip special. How cool to fish off of the dock or jump in the lake if the fish aren't cooperating! Our first stay with them was in 2009 and you can find our review below. We would not stay anywhere else at Lake Almanor. Period! Previously, we have stayed at VRBO properties at Lake A.(2007 and 2008), Florida, Hawaii and Palm Desert . From our experience, Bob and Jennifer are the very best of hosts! The wine, cake, notes and contact really show how dedicated they are to making our vacation enjoyable! Quite frankly, it must be difficult to satisfy a wide variety of clients with varying expectations with a smile. Our experience has been a warm welcome, immaculate property and everything in working order. I didn't post another review before because I hate to share how beautiful the lake is in October. Just being selfish. Check out the Bizz Johnson trail runs if you like running ! We will be back next year! (Already planning the trip.) Thanks, Bob and Jennifer for making our stay so pleasant year after year!

Owner's Response: Thanks for taking time out of your busy schedule to share yet another positive experience here at Pier 142. We love having you two year after year, and always look forward to our conversations. We wish you both Happy Holidays and a very fabulous New Year:) Sincerely, Bob & Jennifer

VERY DECIEVING!!!!!

  • 1 of 5
  • Submitted: Sep 6, 2012

My family booked this vacation rental after looking at the beautiful pictures portraying this as an actual LAKEFRONT RETREAT!!!! I also called and talked to Jennifer specifically and asked if we were ON the lake (as we have had bad experiences with other rentals). We have smaller children and want to be able to see them at all times if they are by the water. She assured me is was.

I further checked into this address and as I am in real estate and there are 2 properties (very clever) with the address posted. THEIRS and the rental. 99% of these pictures are taken from THEIR home which is directly in front of the rental BLOCKING the views to the lake almost completely! The main view while sitting on the deck is their roof so if LAKEFRONT is important to you, do not let these pictures deceive you as this is NOT it!!!!!

Also, it is advertised with cable! Well folks, the only room it works in is the living room. There are TV's in the bedrooms but they don't work unless you want to watch the VHS tapes from the 70's and 80's they have there and most of them didn't work.

The carpets were filthy! They ask that you take your shoes off due to the pine sap in the driveway and after a few hours walking on the carpet, our socks were black! Not sure when they were cleaned!

The showers didn't drain and we waded in the previous persons dirty water and that is IF you were able to take a shower as the water was always cold.

The cake was a nice gesture but didn't fix the fact that we were outright lied to about the proximity to the lake! This was the most important factor in renting a clearly advertised LAKEFRONT RETREAT!!!!!!!!
Owner's Response: It is imperative to read the entire ad when looking for a vacation rental. The description of our property is under the accomodations / amenities section, which I'm sure will accurately portray what the rental house provides. The access to the lake and surrounding area are depicted in the photo section of our ad. My pictures and ( positive reviews from my many return guests, speak for themselves). Please feel free to call or e-mail me if you have any questions or concerns reguarding the rental of our property. We want all of our guests to leave with fabulous family memories that they'll treasure always. I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you, Jennifer & Bob

Great Retreat

My family of 4 had the privilege of staying at Jennifer and Bob's lakefront retreat. Upon our arrival we were warmly greeted by Bob and Jennifer. When we entered the kitchen we saw a delicious freshly baked chocolate cake and a bottle of red wine. They knew how to get our vacation off to a great start. The house is in an ideal location and has all the amenities as described. The lakefront location is great as we would walk down to the lake and jump into the refreshing water of Lake Almanor. The kids loved swimming to the water trampoline ( a short swim from the pier). There is a marina about 1 mile away where we rented ski boats and jet skis. It seemed as if we were one of only a handful of boats on the lake. We had most meals at the home taking advantage of the gas grill and dining on the deck looking at the lake. We did not explore any nightlife (if there is any) as we were tuckered out at the end of the day. The owners are upfront, honest, and prompt in returning our security deposit. My only hesitation a writing this review is if it decreases the availability of the property when we want to go back!
