Within walking distance of the cottage:
Elwha Rock Road, a quiet half-mile private road from the main county road to the cottage, is great for walks and wildlife watching through the woods and fields. Killibrew Lake, a little-used public Department of Forestry property, is only a mile from the cottage. It offers a spot for exploration and warm water swimming as well as a nice destination for a longer walk. Those wanting an even more challenging walk can use the ferry landing as their goal. That two-mile excursion takes a walker past farms, forests, and water views into the quaint Orcas Village for coffee or a snack before heading back to the cottage to complete a four-mile circuit.
No road noise can be heard from the cottage. Its acre of land, waterfront setting, and long driveway also keep it out of the private neighborhood road's view.
Orcas Island Adventures:
Orcas Island itself offers an endless array of activities and adventures, including hiking, sea kayaking, lake and ocean fishing, boating, whale watching, canoeing, shopping, beach combing, biking, and diving, as well as day trips by ferry to other islands and Victoria, British Columbia. The island has numerous artists’ colonies that welcome visitors to take classes, view artists at work, and purchase wares. Moran State Park has miles of hiking trails and three lakes to explore, with water warm enough for swimming during the summer. Park rangers and docents offer walks and talks on a great variety of topics. The island has many local fairs and celebrations, open-air music concerts, quality live theatre, flea markets, garage sales, and farmers’ markets.
Eastsound, the main village on the island, and a 15 to 20-minute drive from the Quinn Cottage through pastoral farmlands and beautiful mountain vistas, is a charming town with many restaurants, specialty shops and a major super market.
Golf:
The Orcas Island Country Golf Club is a public course situated in the heart of Orcas Island just 10 minutes from the ferry landing. It is one of the most breathtakingly beautiful and enjoyable courses, called 'one of the best kept secrets of the Pacific Northwest.' This quaint, challenging regulation and WSGA rated course, now 47 years old, has all the nuances required for both amateur and professional golfers. It offers excellent Astoria Bent greens, well designed tees greens plus dangerously positioned water hazards, all surrounded by beautiful evergreens, abundant wildlife, and the magic of Orcas Island.
