Sitting on a knoll above the water, the house lies on two acres of land and overlooks peaceful McFarland’s Cove, Johns Bay, and the Atlantic Ocean. The private deep water dock and mooring lie protected in the little cove, allowing safe harbor for boats, great fishing with the children, or comfortable swimming in the calm waters. The house itself is a unique, turn of the century classic. It has exposed wood throughout, beautiful pine floors, a large open space which combines the living and dining rooms, and a fireplace to gather around at night. A spacious porch with rocking chairs and a comfortable wicker seating area provide the ideal location to enjoy the stunning views.
Although the house is a classic Maine oceanfront cottage, everything is brand new including the appliances, the beds (high-end Serta hotel beds), the linens (300+ thread cnt), the down blankets, the TV (a 39” HD flat screen w/ DirecTV), the DVD player with a movie library, and a fully furnished chef’s kitchen.
The house and property was exactly as described. There was plenty room for all of us, my husband and myself, our four adult kids and their spouses, girlfriends, as well as our granddaughter and a close family friend. We fished, and hiked, and biked, and walked, and toured Pemaquid lighthouse. We cooked and ate, and sat by the fire, both outside and in. We slept in cozy beds at night, and shared a huge lobster feast together around the huge dining table. We can't wait to go back and do it again! What a beautiful spot!!
This is a review I hate to write because I want to be able to rent this house again, year after year with no competition! We spent two weeks here, one with another family, and the house was perfect both for our large group and when we were alone with our family. It is a classic, spacious Maine cottage with all of the updates we would want but losing none of the midcoast charm we hoped for. The view is unparalleled, the kitchen inspired me to bake with the fresh blueberries I picked right outside the door, and the property offered a huge variety of fun pursuits for our boys. The owner is super responsive and helpful and I wouldn't change a thing. I will be dreaming all year about sitting on that incredible deck during happy hour, watching the ospreys hunting, and going for a sunset paddle.
The listing description was accurate regarding the location. The house is situated on a beautiful piece of property that is quiet and serene with picturesque views. We loved sitting on the back porch to watch the osprey repeatedly dive for fish, and the lobster men setting and collecting their traps-very entertaining! I highly recommend bringing binoculars! The listing photos are reflective to the rental's appearance. A very clean home with great kitchen/dining amenities. The beds and bedding were very comfortable. The owner of the property answered all of our questions and had good correspondence. The caretaker of the property was delightful, kind and helpful. He made sure that we were situated upon arrival. Yes, I would recommend this place to friends and relatives. One thing to mention for families, is that laundry does need to be done in town.
My husband had a big project on his hands when I asked that he find a place for our family and a few friends. A place that was in Maine..not touristy Maine, but true Maine. Someplace that was right on the water, large enough not to feel cramped, clean, beautiful, quaint, and with a fully equipped kitchen. John you were delightful to deal with and you spoke the truth when you suggested that your home would exceed our expectations. BOY did it!
We fell in love the second we walked in! The house is very well kept..with an extroidinarily well stocked kitchen! Seriously..those salad bowls were the BIGGEST bowls I have ever seen! The beds, as advertised were wonderfully comfortable..soft sheets, new sturdy beds! The (huge) dining room table saw amazing meals..as well as the picnic tables outside for our lobster bake. My most favorite spot in the house though was that porch! I have not found that much relaxation all summer long! What a view! The kids loved bunking up in the bedroom with the best view in the house..what a great room! They also loved how easily the fish were caught right off the dock! We kayaked and stand up paddled, fished, ate, imbibed, relaxed, played games, enjoyed fire pits, and fires in the living room. We played lacross in the front yard, visited the Fort, as well as the Pemaquid lighthouse. Perfect!
For a large group (we had up to 5 kids ages 8-12 and 7 adults), we never felt cramped and we never grew bored! There was nothing that we didn't have at our fingertips in this house. It truly was like walking into 'home'. We highly recommend this beautiful home!
Thanks again John for your communication, and for sharing your outstanding home with us! We would love to come back to enjoy it again!
Our family of eight thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this wonderful place in MacFarland Cove. The spectacular views, climate and wonderful accommodations made our visit quite special. Our two kids (ages 9 and 11) enjoyed fishing off the dock, roasting marshmallows, and short hikes over to the cove beach just down the road. We enjoyed fresh lobster dinners most nights, courtesy of the fisherman's co-op daily catch in nearby South Bristol. The location was perfect, allowing for some easy day trips along the midcoast to Camden and Popham Beach. John was most helpful and informative, making our stay most pleasant and relaxing. We're looking forward to our next visit to this hidden gem!
John, your cottage was wonderful. The location and interior accommodations were very pleasant. my wife and I travel all over the world and we agree that the view from your porch over looking McFarland Bay was among the best we have experienced. Our kids were on the dock every day fishing, kayaking, or just chatting with their cousins.
We hope to be there again next year.
The house lies on two acres and enjoys truly magnificent ocean views. South Bristol couldn’t be more beautiful and authentically Maine, and lies in the heart of New England’s most picturesque region, mid-coast Maine. Local attractions include: Pemaquid Lighthouse – perhaps the most photographed lighthouse in the U.S.; Boothbay Harbor – one of Maine’s most charming harbors with great shopping and restaurants; Monhegan Island – a famous artist colony and long-time home of Andrew Wyeth; and Fort William Henry – a national historic landmark built in 1692 which guards the colonial Pemaquid settlement and harbor.
