Beautiful House, Fabulous Fun! Thanks so much.

Review Submitted: August 28, 2009 Date of Stay: August 2009
We rented this house on a whim, having never been to Lubec or even to Maine. We arrived on Saturday afternoon and we were thrilled to find such a beautiful house with an ocean view, a great porch, super comfortable beds, and everyting we needed for a week of fun. We hiked all the local trails, saw seals and herons from the shore, dranks fresh milk from the Tide Mill Organic Farm nearby, and slept every night in such a peaceful, still place. Thank you so much ~ We will come back for sure!

A slice of heaven

Everything about the property is great! Talk about Location, Location Location! The chalet is wonderful and beautifully appointed. All of the amenities were as described... only better! It was immaculate and fully furnished with everything you would need to have a wonderful vacation. There are even full birdfeeders in the yard so you can watch all the beautiful birds. The views from the living room, loft and deck were so breathtaking it was hard to leave it to explore the area but we were glad we did. Lots of things to see and do in the area. We visited Campobello Island and of course, all the lighthouses in the area. We saw whales from the shore as well as seals and many sea birds Jerry and Deb were great hosts and our communication couldn't have been better. They sent us a list of things to see in the area as well as where to shop and dine. . They also included local information in case of an emergency not only for us but for a pet had we brought one.. Directions were precise and easy to follow. I would recommend this property to anyone. We plan to visit again next year.

A great place to run to...

New York Run-Aways Weedsport, New York
Review Submitted: August 16, 2009 Date of Stay: August 2009
We knew we had made the correct choice the minute we saw the chalet. We were looking for an escape and found everything that we had hoped for. A beautiful, clean, well appointed house down a quiet lane, a wonderful view, and hummingbirds for entertainment. The view of Haycock Harbor is beautiful, relaxing and a joy to sit and watch the changing tides.

We could have also spent days just poking around at Smith's Beach, and never left Havenhurst Road. We did leave the road for hiking and whale watching and light houses and Campobello and lots of other places. The hares were entertaining, but we didn't happen to see any moose or bears. We are willing to return and try again though! The area is spectacular, there was more to do and see than we ever had time for.

The chalet is just the way it is represented in the photos, there were no surprises. Everything was neat and clean and easy to find. The beds were very comfortable with nice sheets and down comforters for when the nights got chilly. The owners,Jerry and Deb were friendly, enthusiastic and great to talk to. They answered all the questions that we had, Debbie gave us great hints on sea-glass and where to buy lobster.

Everything you read in the reviews are accurate, it's a beautiful and special house and area, full of very friendly people, and we appreciate the privilege of experiencing it. It's the perfect escape from everyday reality. Our only regret is that our time there went so very, very, very fast.

The Way Life Should Be

Main-e-acs Central Maryland
Review Submitted: August 8, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2009
We knew the minute we arrived and looked at the beautiful view of the harbor below and then began to explore the impeccably spotless cabin that we had indeed found a gem. While the cabin had the rustic charm you often find in Maine, complete with a spiral staircase made out of a tree trunk, it was delightfully updated and spotless. It was obvious that the owners take great care of this property and put a lot of thought into the needs of those looking for a home away from home.

The furniture was comfortable and we appreciated the fluffy towels and bedding that kept us warm during our unseasonably cool July week. It would have been a pleasure to spend the entire week inside with a pile of books while gazing at the changing tides below (when it wasn't foggy!). . .however, there were so many exciting places to explore outside.

The owners were extremely helpful with sending information before we arrived, and we had many outings planned around the Cobscook Area Trails Guide. While the Lubec area doesn't get the publicity that Acadia National Park does, we were surrounded by many beautiful hikes that led us to coastal views as breathtaking as any at Acadia. The difference is there are no crowds here, just lots of peace and quiet and friendly folks. This is the real Maine.

I highly recommend hiking the Bold Coast Trail in Cutler, exploring nearby Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge, Reversing Falls in Pembroke, West Quoddy Lighthouse, and Mowry Beach in Lubec. We visited Campobello Island twice to explore Head Harbor Lighthouse (what an adventure to get to it only during low tide!), FDR's summer home, a fascinating black/brown sand beach, as well as other hiking trails.

We saw whales, a bear, bald eagles, lots of osprey, seals, hummingbirds, ruffed grouse, and a hare that was a daily visitor. Our boys spent hours beachcombing every day. A 10-minute walk down the dirt road leads to a pebble beach that felt like our own private harbor. Life here centers around the Bay of Fundy tides, and it was refreshing and energizing to plan activites around the tide schedule instead of manmade deadlines.

The owners were extremely helpful and friendly, from inital contacts by email with Jerry, to Deb's (proprieter of Northern Tides) helpful information when I had a dental emergency. Northern Tides was the perfect place to stock up on gifts to take back home.

After one day at the cabin our boys declared that we have to return to Maine every year.

Eagles and moose and bear...oh, my!!

WannabeaMainer! OKC, OK
Review Submitted: September 26, 2008 Date of Stay: September 2008
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this lovely Lubec lodge for a long weekend in mid-to-late September 2008! And, while we only saw the signs of a recent bear visit, we were truly blessed with...
lovely ocean views from the lodge
beautiful nearby lighthouses to explore
West Quoddy
Channel light
East Quoddy (Canada)
Mulholland Light House (Canada)
wooded hiking trails along the rocky coast & shorelines
seal watching in Lubec Harbor
bald eagle sighting at East Quoddy
short shopping excursions at
Northern Tides
Monica's Chocolates (YuM!)
local grocery stores (in Lubec and Machias)
yard sales and souvenir shops
friendly Maine folks
delicious seafood (best clams EVer at Family Fisheries)
wonderful Christian fellowship at the Congregational Church
and our accommodating host and lovely hostess,
Jerry and Debra (also proprietor of Northern Tides)

I could go on-and-on about our activities but you're visiting Home Away to find some great travel accommodations...

Let me say this is a fabulous find, and we couldn't have been happier with the lodging! On our visit, the chalet (lodge) was spotlessly clean, tastefully decorated and well-supplied with many modern conveniences; exceptions: air conditioning (which was not needed) and microwave.

Beds were very comfy (not too hard, not too soft...just right!!) and warm coverings kept us cozy at night. The bath linens were equally pleasing-- plump, soft, bright- white, cotton towels.

Up the winding staircase, in the loft is a richly-upholstered futon, convenient writing desk, and mid-sized screen television/DVD/satellite. A wonderful assortment of movies included many "Two Thumbs Up!" which we hadn't seen.

For anyone who might be a bit "nervous" about the remote location of the cabin, there is a laundry room off the master bedroom which I (being a somewhat squeemish girl!) ran as I drifted off to sleep the first night! We arrived well after dark and the familiar sound of the washer/dryer calmed my anxiety!!

By Day 2, our Oklahoma senses were pleasantly overwhelmed with the ocean/bayviews and the densely wooded forests! We stayed three nights but realize we could have stayed the full week to take in all the surrounding areas as well.

Just can't say enough good things about this rental. We're "in love with Maine" and Lubec, and we're looking forward to a return visit in the not-too-distant future! Enjoy!
