Lake Santeetlah offers the perfect setting for a wilderness retreat where you can indulge in a variety of outdoor and aquatic activities or simply relax in the tranquility of a quaint mountain development that has preserved an era of days past.

Located in the high peaks of the Smoky Mountains in Western North Carolina and surrounded lush greens, mountain laurel, trout streams, waterfalls, white-water rivers, miles of hiking trails and the tallest trees east of the Mississippi, Lake Santeetlah is a 3,000 acre lake with 80 miles of shoreline of which 90% is within The Nantahala National Forest.

We just completed upgrading our cabin with all new exterior siding, new roof, new kitchen counter top and sink,fresh paint and all new windows. Santeetlah is a rare find with its crystal clear waters, mountain views and hidden coves. Our property is unique because of its beach; only a handful of Santeetlah properties have beaches making this location very family friendly and also allowing people to walk into the water as well as sit beachside. A dock is also available for boating.

We have an open design that includes a full kitchen, living room and dining area as a large open space. The sliding doors provide a full view of the lake as well as to the screened-in porch where you can enjoy an early morning cup of coffee and an evening meal. The porch provides alternate access to the beach, about 50 feet away, easily accessed on the level back yard. There are no steep, tiring steps to climb up and down to get to the waterfront.

The living room has two very comfortable leather couches to lounge while reading, watching the scenic twilights and the dew rising from the early morning waters. The couches can sleep two additional people in comfort. The bedrooms are large enough for a queen size bed in one and two twin size beds in the other. The bathroom has a shower and bathtub.

You'll love the lake water; you can swim comfortably 3 of the 4 seasons. During the spring, its in the upper 60's to low 70's and it remains in the upper 70's to 80 throughout the summer - very unusual for a mountain lake. Kayaking and canoeing is very enjoyable and boating is an adventure exploring the many fingers and coves where you can anchor for an afternoon for lunch and never see another boat while you swim, read or just relax.

Since purchasing our cabin, we've done a number of upgrades; new siding, new vinyl windows, new roof, new kitchen counter, fresh paint and a new air conditioning unit. A mix of rustic charm and modern amenities. We plan on continuing to make improvements and offer the best value on the lake.

After visiting many, many lakes throughout the Southeast to find the perfect family retreat, we stumbled onto Lake Santeetlah. After our first visit, we knew this was the place we had long awaited. The serenity, the mountains, the rustic charm, the clear waters, the remote coves and the small town community made us feel like we were on vacation on every visit. Santeetlah is a best kept secret and unspoiled due to its National Forest shoreline. Lake Santeetlah cannot be re-created, but for those who want to experience nature at its best, seeing is believing.

What makes this cabin unique

The beauty of Santeetlah is a double threat - the mystique of the Smoky Mountains coupled with the crystal clear waters.During the early mornings you can sit at the screened porch or on the dock and enjoy a cup of coffee while the morning dew gradually rises from the water revealing the mountain landscape and pallet of colors. Only a handful of the lake properties have beach access to the waters, our is one of those rarities. This feature allows you to place beach chairs in the water edge and allows children to play at the water front and makes it easier to enter the warm water at your own pace to wade or swim rather than diving or climbing ladders as required by most properties. Plenty of parking also makes this property a desired location.

Fantastic location--house could be better

We loved the location of the house, right on the lake, quiet, and the lake is so beautiful. Everywhere in the house was very clean, except the bathroom that smelled of urine. It could be the sewage system, or around the toilet. The mattress on the queen bed sank in the middle so we had to sleep in the room with the twin beds. Not a big problem.

Owner's Response: Thank you for staying with us. We also noticed the smell in the bathroom right after your stay. We replaced the bath mat and that has solved the problem. The mattress is only two years old and is on the soft side, if you would prefer a firm mattress that could be arranged. We did not find it to be sagging. We always email our renters after their stay and ask if there are anything in the house that needs attention, we want to make your stay a comfortable as posiable. Alway let us know if you see anything that need fixing.

Such a great time!

We celebrated our five year anniversary at Lake Santeetlah and had a fabulous time! The house was cozy, well maintained and well appointed. It seemed to have everything we needed. The dock was our favorite feature as we took our boat with us, and it was so nice to have it there on the water when we woke up in the mornings. The landing was a five minute ride around the bend, so easy to get to.
The owner, Debbie, was very easy to get along with and even brought us a bottle of champagne to help us celebrate our anniversary! It was good fishing and lots of beautiful scenery. The lake is one of the nicest I've seen. Water was crystal clear.

Pictures are deceiving!

The intererior of the home is well kept and has nice accommodations. However, the picture and descriptions of the "private dock" is accurate but the assumption of a private beach is NOT. The beach area is small, and shared by other neighboring property owners. The picture is focused on the chairs because a view from the screened in porch would indicate how cramped the beach access really is. Power boats can be docked here, but the dock access is VERY tight. Finally, it is described as kid friendly, however kids were encouraged to stay within the designated beach area for this rental house.

Owner's Response: We are sorry you felt the property was deceiving in the pictures, that is not our intentions. Was always tell our renters that it is a small house and beach area. Our neighbors are wonderful people and always welcome who ever is visting to play on the beach. We are working on a plan for a deck at the beach area and hope that will help.
