About Marilyn and John Darack

We are two active professionals. Failures at retirement, attempting to spend as much time as possible in New Harbor. We purchased Bayberry Cottage in 2000 and renovated and expanded it. When we moved to a year 'round home on the other side of town, we couldn't bear to sell Bayberry - nor would our children let us! When our children all decide to visit us at the same time and fill the house, we go and stay at our beloved Bayberry!

Marilyn and John Darack purchased this cottage in 2000

Why Marilyn and John Darack chose New Harbor

We discovered New Harbor 40 years ago while on a camping trip to Boothbay. We immediately packed up our gear and moved to a campground in New Harbor. We returned year after year, first camping, then staying at rentals and finally having our own home. After all these years we still marvel at the beauty of New Harbor and still enjoy its fabulous amenities. We keep meeting more and more folks who have had similar experiences. After having explored so much of the Maine coast, we just knew we had stumbled into a very special place - and we were right!

What makes this cottage unique

Immense natural beauty, lobsters right off the boat, ever changing harbor activity. Watch the tides change and the eiders, cormorants, great blue herons, and kingfishers going about their activities. Many find it difficult to tear themselves away from the property. Choose from attractions and distractions galore, or just relax on the porch.

Fantastic Gem aka "The Maine House."

  • 5 of 5

Wow!! From the moment we walked in, our family was in heaven. My wife, son (3) and I had been to Boothbay a couple years back and fell in love with the area. We decided to explore the Pemaquid area in more depth this summer. The pictures do not do this home base justice. When we walked in and saw the view, we knew we had found our new vacation "home." Spacious and open, the kitchen well equipped, and that fireplace!! We knew we'd be doing some cooking (I'm a chef) and grilling with that view and with the proper equipment in the kitchen, we had everything we needed. Even with all our travels to the local lobster pounds, forts, nature preserves and beaches, relaxing in the comfy living room, with a fire going on the cool nights and watching the sunset was easily the family favorite. Our three year old son was even requesting "Maine House", when tiring from the days activities. He enjoyed the tidal waters and just running in the open house and the yard.

The description of the property is on the dot. The house itself is clean, beautiful, inside and out, to accompany the gorgeous views. As stated, the kitchen is well supplied and the open concept is very comfortable and spacious. The booklet that Marilyn and John have written on the local activities is very helpful. Though we did not get to meet Marilyn, we had a couple of phone chats with her while there, one just checking in on the first night and another offering to bring over some warm cookies on our last. Unfortunately we were enjoying one last dinner at Round Pond Lobster Pound and missed out on the cookies!

Other area attractions we enjoyed were the various nature preserves, the "castles" (Fort William Henry and Fort Edgecomb are castles according to our son), Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, or just finding little outlets to the ocean while driving the coast. Shopping for groceries at Reilly's was convenient as they are very friendly and have everything you could need. We ate at Round Pond Lobster Co Op three times and met great people every time. The price there is fantastic, with good service and the best steamers.

So, in summary, this place is great. Great for children. Great for loving the Maine Coast, sunsets over the harbor, and just calm, beautiful vacations, not too far from the action. We cannot wait to return year after year, as we have found our "Maine House" as well. Our son, has been requesting a return since our departure. Just eleven months to wait!

You won't be disappointed

  • 5 of 5

Accurately described property exceeded expectations. Beautiful ever-changing tidal views of the Pemaquid River with its boats, rocks, and birds; well appointd and supplied home; comfortable mattresses and pillows; excellent value for the area; design and site give privacy in small, quiet community. Marilyn and John were thoughtfully attentive but not intrusive. In under an hour you can be as far south as Brunswick or Boothbay Harbor or north to Rockland. A nice variety of good restaurants abound and the beach at Pemaquid State Park is gorgeious and well maintained. We particularly enjoyed the Pemaquid Lighhouse area as well as its views from the Sea Gull Cafe whose breakfasts are a must. The Cottage cafe is also delightful with its homemade breads and family recipes. The sticky buns and cinnamon rolls should not be missed. You will enjoy your stay at Bayberry Cottage!

Delightful 2-BR cottage on New Harbor

  • 5 of 5

We happened onto this property in a search of the Damariscotta area--it looked too good to be true but lived up to and exceeded our expectations. Cabin was very clean and kitchen exceptionally well-equipped. The guide to the area developed by the owner was superb, and we took in many of the local attractions. None of the restaurants recommended disappointed us. There are water views from both bedrooms as well as from the screened in porch, where you can sit on a rainy day if it's warm enough. We opted for the linen service and all items were as promised. We will definitely return to this cottage on a future trip to the area.

We really lucked out!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I recently spent five days in New Harbor and really “lucked out” with our choice of Bayberry Cottage. As soon as we opened the door we knew this was going to be one fine vacation! Bayberry is cheerful, cozy, and really clean.

There was no need to shop for anything except food. The cottage had everything else. We took walks around the state park, rode our bikes around town and onto the beach, and visited local galleries. One night we bought lobsters right from the Fishermens’ Coop, brought them back to Bayberry to cook them up, and ate them in front of a crackling fire. We ate breakfasts on the porch or on the dock.

We really liked the Damariscotta River Grill restaurant, but were very pleasantly surprised by the extensive menu and great food at the unassuming Salt Bay Café, also in Damariscotta.

Five days wasn’t enough. We’ll be back for more!

Quaint & Sunny

  • 4 of 5

My husband & I spent a wonderful week at Bayberry Cottage. We were so impressed with the cleanliness of the cottage and the lovely view of the Harbor. The cottage is located in with a group of other cottages called Heron Cove & lo & behold we caught sight of a heron at low tide. The owner Marilyn stopped by to say hello & was so pleasant. She even baked homemade cookies for us! The cottage is located close to Pemaquid Beach, one of the cleanest beaches we have ever visited. The cost to enter the beach is only 4.00 per adult! Also nearby is the impressive Pemaquid Lighthouse, where the view is breathtaking. Marilyn provided a great visitor activity binder which contained all kinds of interesting places to visit & things to see, so helpful. We ate at the Pemaquid lighthouse for breakfast, blueberry pancakes to die for. We also tried Anchor Inn which has great seafood. our last evening brought our bottle of wine over to Pemaquid co op where we both had the best lobster dinner with another beautiful view of the harbor. New Harbor is the perfect place to visit for those who want a more quiet relaxed non touristy place in Maine. Bayberry cottage is perfect for couples or small families. We both enjoyed our stay very much.

Incredible waterfront cottage.

  • 5 of 5

If you are considering a relaxing, mid coast vacation with limitless opportunities for fun, adventure and seafood, Bayberry is for you. From the moment we pulled up to the cottage and opened the door, our family knew we had found the perfect place to unwind and enjoy coastal Maine.

Everything about this cottage, as expressed in other reviews and the posted description, is wonderful. It is extraordinarily clean and flooded with sunlight (the pictures are not deceiving). Our girls (7 & 9) instantly found the unique loft which served as their headquarters for the week.

The screened porch overlooks an active cove filled with lobster boats and served as a tranquil spot for morning coffee, reading and afternoon happy hour.

The owners are an absolute delight to work with and have provided an extensive "to do" book for activities ranging from within walking distance to day trips as well as details regarding the numerous dining options available nearby.

The cottage is situated in an ideal location for kayaking (we rented two tandems from Maine Kayaks less than a mile away) with easy access to the water and the added bonus of being able to leave the kayaks near the friendly dock. The girls were able to catch crabs from the dock and quickly made friends with children visiting cottages close by.

Our days were filled with trips to the Pemaquid Point lighthouse, nearby Colonial Pemaquid, a great beach for kids, a puffin excursion, kayaking, and a recurring sense that this is too good to be true. We are looking forward to expanding our daily quests to nearby Boothbay Harbor, Camden and Rockland on our next visit.

The cottage has a great kitchen, working fireplace, large bathroom, and very comfortable beds. The table in the family room is perfect for puzzles and the decor throughout is tastefully maintained. Everything you could possibly need has been provided, including free Wi-fi access, a DVD player and a nice sound system.

Finally, we were in lobster heaven! There are unlimted options for getting your seafood fix. Do not miss Shaw's or the lobster co-op directly accross the cove.

Bottom line: you should stay at Bayberry (so long as you don't steal my week!!)
