Our retirement home was finished in 2007 and is on 5 acres. Its 1500 ft on one floor with an additional 650 ft lanai: 400 sq ft covered. Most of your time will be on the lanai with its views. The kitchen has granite counter tops, stainless steel appliances, cherry wood cabinets and wood floors throughout. You'll find everything you'll need to cook your meals and serve them.
The tile showers are spacious and the mountain view from the master shower is gorgeous.
From the living room, kitchen, master bedroom and lanai your view is of Papohaku Beach, the oceanfront golf course and Oahu. On clear days and nights you'll see Waikiki and Diamond Head.
If the glitz of Waikiki is what you want, Molokai is not for you. You'll love Molokai if relaxation, privacy, solitude or a romantic getaway is your interest. We think of it as Montana in the middle of the Pacific, without the winter. The West End is the dry, sunny side, The winter has surf, the summer great snorkeling. At night the Milky Way and the constellations will amaze.
We're from Southern California and grew up on the beach, but at a certain point we wanted warm water (78-80 degrees) and a lot less people. After looking at Maui, Oahu & The Big Island we returned to Molokai and found what we were looking for. We're now retired and love our time on Molokai. Our adult kids love it too. We're very active and have been athletes all our lives. Plenty of activities if that is what you are looking.
Our property fit our needs: great views, privacy, peaceful.
Though the waterfront is great, we felt we wanted a more panoramic type of view rather than the horizon of the ocean. We have the horizon, but also the view of Papohaku Beach, Kiaka Rock along with Diamondhead, Honolulu, and the Eastern side of Oahu. Out the back we have gorgeous views of the mostly empty hills. At night we see the lighthouse at Makapu and the lights of Waikiki. It is amazing to think there are around 750000+ people on Oahu and around 7000 people on Molokai.....
Talk about stars, Molokai is one of the best places to observe the Milky Way. Truly amazing!
Five acres is a lot of land, but because of the way our home is situated and the other homes nearby are practically out of site, when you sit on our lanai it feels and looks like you are on your own private 5,000 acre property. Plenty of privacy when you are in the house or on the deck.
Kaunakakai is located 15 miles away, serving great food. Bike rental and food supply is located there too, as well as other shops. There are a number of excellent restaurants within 15-20 minutes that provide a variety of specialties. Grocery stores, with everything you'll need are in famous Kaunakakai town which is about 20 minutes drive. On Saturday's there is a fun farmers/crafts market there. We normally eat in and enjoy the sunset from our deck. If you like star-gazing, and the night is clear, The Milky Way looks like a cloud. With our telescope & binoculars you will see space and be awed as never before.
The beaches only a few minutes from the home are incredible and varied. Many times, we find ourselves the only people on the beach. Beautiful crystal clear water makes for great snorkeling and swimming, and it is between 78 & 80 degrees year round. We normally BBQ and eat on our deck though you'll find a full kitchen with all the cooking items you'll need. We have a 50' TV in the living room and a 36' in the guest room, both with Direct TV. Need to use your laptop, just use the MiFi password and you'll get excellent reception and hook-up.
From driving to the East End or the Kalapapa Trail and lookout you'll have plenty of things to see on the island, including a Macadamia Nut Farm and a Sugar Cane Museum and even a Coffee plantation with some of the best coffee in the world.
Free long distance will keep you in touch with your family or work, but we think you'll quickly adjust to the beauty of solitude that Molokai offers. Wake up to birds chirping and nothing to do but relax. Every room has a view, either the ocean & Oahu or the surrounding mountain that contains Axis Deer and turkeys. It's what Hawaii used to be with friendly people at the stores and restaurants.
