In Winter… Vermont is known around the world as a winter wonderland.
Within just a short drive of Chester, visitors can ski four of the top-rated ski areas in the world: Okemo – 12 miles, Bromley – 10 miles, Stratton – 15 miles, Killington/Pico – 38 miles. For those interested in Cross-Country skiing, there are more than a dozen highly rated trails within 10 miles, including Grafton Ponds and Lowell Lake. Of course, there are plenty of other winter activities that can be enjoyed in or around Chester including: ice-skating, ice-fishing, sledding, horse drawn sleigh rides, hunting on approved dates, snow-shoeing and snowmobiling.
In Summer… those who visit when the weather grows warmer know that Vermont is equally as special in the summer.
The State of Vermont is home to: 21 State Parks, 26 State Forests, 3 State Wildlife Management Areas, 1 National Park, 1 National Wildlife Refuge, 66 lakes and hundreds of streams and rivers to enjoy. All of these natural resources create endless opportunities for outdoor fun, including fishing, camping, swimming, kayaking, hiking, mountain biking, horsebakc riding, zip lines, gondola rides and so much more. Of course, Chester and the small nearby towns, such as Grafton, Woodstock and Weston, are perfect for long leisurely strolls or historic sightseeing, antique shopping, dining out, listening to music, browsing artist galleries or browsing countless craft fairs and farmer’s markets.
In the Fall… simply put, there is no more beautiful place on earth to experience fall foliage than Vermont.
Each year, tens of thousands of visitors drive the back country roads of Chester to take in the intoxicating beauty of the changing of the leaves.

My parents, sister and I stayed here for a fall weekend and just loved it. Chester is a sweet, picturesque town--less busy than some others in the area, but within a short drive of those busier places for folks who need more action. The barn apartment is totally charming - my Mom particularly appreciated the decor, including all the adorable tchotchkes, which add a really homey touch. In addition, the place was fully stocked with everything we needed for a very comfortable stay. We particularly enjoyed cocktails by the cozy gas fireplace each evening. (And coffee by the cozy gas fireplace in the morning!) Also, our hosts could not have been more accommodating - both Cara, who made the rental arrangements and was totally responsive, and her Dad, the resident innkeeper and wit, who immediately addressed our only complaint (the TV being on a little too late in the neighboring apartment) and entertained us every time we saw him. In short, we would be delighted to stay at the barn again.
We found this restored barn on VRBO many years ago. We haven't missed a season since. We are a family of four, but have once shared the space with our extended family (four more). The barn is beautiful and filled with gorgeous antiques. The owners have become like a family to us. They welcome children and pets even though the place is immaculate. The kitchen is well stocked with everything you would need to make a meal. We have explored fabulous local restaurants, bakeries and book stores at their recommendation. The town of Chester is adorable and right down the road from Ludlow, an easy drive to Okemo and Bromley. We can't get enough of this place.
We have been bringing our family here annually for more than ten years now. We originally came to Chester for our annual ski trip because of its proximity to great ski resorts (Okemo, Bromley, Magic Mountain). We fell in love with the town, the house and the wonderful apartments inside. We have since stayed here in summertime and the fall, taking advantage of the scenery and the great outdoors in Vermont. The drive up to Chester from New York only takes about 4 hours and the town is situated more or less in the middle of the state, so everything you want to do in Vermont is easily accessible.
This magical colonial barn has been renovated to modern comfort and convenience without losing the charm of its history. It is always clean and cozy when we arrive. When the fireplace is lit and you are relaxing on the couch, looking out past the lawn and into the Vermont woods, there is nowhere else you'd rather be.
Our children grew up here on our yearly visits, playing cards and cooking dinners after skiing, building snow forts and snowmen, trekking into town, and playing outside. Every visit we are greeted as long time friends. We all truly feel like we have extended our family thanks to the hospitality and friendship of this Chester family and their fantastic New England barn. It is a place full of the best memories and a location that we treasure. Your stay here will be remarkable!
I have stayed here numerous times over the last several years. The rental space is rustic and charming, but comfortable and updated with modern amenities. The hosts are super friendly, welcoming, and down to earth. The location is perfect: right on Main Street and only a few minutes' walk from town. I doubt there is a better place to stay in Chester.
