My family stayed at Duke's for 12 nights and we wanted to never leave! We live here in Hawaii, and it was the perfect place to take the kids for their week out of school during spring break. The house is clean and comfortable, with plenty of room for the whole family. The beds are comfortable, the kitchen is well stocked with equipment, and the yard has a great barbecue and plenty of beach chairs for everyone. The location is just amazing, a quick walk to the General Store, and a short bike ride to the park or the boat launch, which is perfect for kayaking. The property is beautiful oceanfront, with tide pools for the kids to play. Duke and Miriam were perfect hosts. We could not have been happier with our stay at Duke's in Puako.
We had a great time at Duke's place. I went with my wife and two children ages 8 and 10. Duke has the best spot in Puako - his place sits on a point pushing out further than any other around, so it has beach and lots of room to move even at high tide. There is a grill with a 180 degree view of the ocean to enjoy while your fish or teriyaki pork from the Waimea farmer's market grills. The neighbors are great - Ray across the street at Pakalana's Sanctuary invited us over for ohano style company and fire dancing! The house is very large (we were in the larger unit) and beach style, casual, clean, comfortable, and quiet. Duke and his family are very quiet and we wouldn't have known they were there if we weren't looking out to say hi. The adjacent studio was occupied part of the time by a delightful couple from Montana who gave us great tips about things to do, having visited the island for decades. This was our 4th time on Puako but is now our favorite place, and we've stayed in some much pricier places. You can't buy "hawaiian style", and if that's what you want (and who doesn't?), then this is your kind of place.
Our annual visit to the Big Island was even better this year thanks to our stay at this vintage beach front home. Nothing fancy, just everything you need to have a great time. Morning coffee and afternoon Mai Tai's in lounge chairs, peacefully watching the tide spray the lava flow that extends from the beach. Just a few minutes away from multiple beaches and 10 minutes from the dive shop - Kohala Divers (our favorite).
The owners of the home are very kind, helpful and giving. They live on the property as well, but you'd never know it - they give you your space.
It's a great place to party! We can't wait to go back!!
We stayed for 2 weeks in January 2014 and were very sad to leave. The property was perfect for our family of four (2 adults, 2 girls age 5 &9), plus my parents who stayed in the suite. My 5 year old built a fort out of spare mattresses which stayed up our whole visit, there was that much room. The bed in the front room was wonderful for waking up and being able to see the surf, and the back bedroom was quiet and spacious. It was not fancy and we were completely happy with that. Everything was clean and comfortable. The owners were immediately helpful if we needed anything. We ate our cereal in the morning at the picnic tables out front, and often ate our dinner out there too, or at the table on the deck in front of the suite. It is a perfect spot for sunsets, and the turtles were amazing. The store was an easy stroll down the road for basics, or the shopping centre 20 min drive away for everything else. We stocked up on fruit and veggies in Kona at the market. (Good local organic milk at the Puako store for the same price we pay on Vancouver Island.) We loved how close the big sandy beaches were, 5 min drive to beach 69 and to Hapuna beach, less than 10 mins to Mauna Lea, and not much more to Spencer Beach park which was calm when the waves were big. We spent a lot of time just hanging out in front of the house, the location is gorgeous.
Thank you Duke and Miriam and we hope to see you again!
As noted before it's not for everyone, but it certainly was for us--not fancy but clean and well-maintained and on a beautiful property right on the ocean. There were 3 beds and plenty of floor mats, so you could house a large group easily, especially with children. The only potential drawback is that the house is L-shaped around the studio, and if the 2 units are rented by people who don't know each other it can feel less private and there could perhaps be problems with noise. However, we had no problems when a single person stayed in the studio while we rented the house.
You can just walk out the door for snorkeling, kayaking and turtle-watching, and we also rode bikes everywhere. It's an easy drive to the best Big Island beaches and resorts, the observatories on Mauna Kea, Hawi, and the ranch country. We loved being able just to sit on the beach every evening and watch the sunset.
Duke was an excellent and very helpful host, doing all he could to make our stay fun and successful. We really liked that he lives right there because we felt everything was safe even when we were gone.
We are certainly hoping to return for another vacation here in the future.
We stayed at Puako in October with two other families at this wonderful home operated by Duke. The home was extremely spacious with three bedrooms and three bathrooms, and really had all the necessities that we needed to enjoy our stay. If you want luxury, then this place isn't for you, but if you want to experience a true Hawaiian beach home, the way I remember as a local growing up, staying at friends' homes, with all the basics that you need, then this is it. The house was fully equipped for cooking for large groups with large pots and pans. The two bedroom side of the house, had a full sized refrigerator and an extra freezer. The studio had a second full sized refrigerator.
The best thing about this home (besides the owner Duke of course) is it's location. The home has a large backyard, with some sand, and wonderful tidepools out front. Our children enjoyed playing with the hermit crabs, and seeing turtles every day just steps from the backyard. Of our kids were very sad to leave and want to come back again. We would really like to extend our heartfelt thanks and aloha to Duke for allowing our group to stay and look forward to booking his home again hopefully annually!
