A month of snorkelin' and fishin'

My husband and I stayed a month in Jan-Feb '09. We chose this rental based on price and location. We have travelled extensively around the Family islands and stayed in everything from very rustic places (think no power and camp toilets) to resortlike places. In general, we feel the Bahamas is overpriced for accomodations and this house was no exception, but it did offer the best value for 2 people anywhere on Cat. And it is on a beauty of a beach with great access to both snorkeling and bonefishing.
The cottage is simply finished with tile floors and rattan furniture but was very clean and well kept. The kitchen is well equipt with pots, pans, spices, etc. Drinking water is good. The caretaker was always available if we needed him. There is a helpful book with local information and phone #s.
As with the other Family islands, this is one of the most safe places you'll ever be. I do not hesitate to venture out on my own, day or night, anywhere.
I recommend bringing food staples with you and be prepared to cook as the local resort restaurants were often closed (too few people) but burgers could usually be had nearby and jerk chicken & pork on Fri/Sat. We only rented a car for 3 days of the month so we used the 2 bikes or walked daily. Smaller stores were within 1 to 3 miles away but the large grocery store was 8 miles.
We used the kayaks daily but it can get windy so watch the weather. The kayaks were perfect for exploring and fishing Bennett's creek nearby. My husband caught bones most days (3-4 lbs) but the weather would be better in Mar/Apr with less wind and warmer temps.
Snorkeling was good off the coral heads at the end of the beach and at the next bay walkable on the beach. We saw tons of fish, very few sharks in the ocean, they seemed to be mostly in the creek. Good for nervous snorkelers.
The beach is beautiful. The water, just like an endless swimming pool. The tiki hut was well used. Temps would be better for swimming in Mar/Apr, but still better than at home!
Booking this trip was very easy. There were no unwanted surprises. Donna was quick to respond and was very helpful. Everything was as advertised on this site. This rental is THE choice on Cat for an active couple looking for beach/snorkeling, bonefishing, privacy, and a laid back spot. I would not recommend this island if you are afraid to meet and mix with the locals or if you expect to be catered to. I made 3 videos on youtube, Cat island 1,2 &3. Enjoy!
