Guestbook comments from the owner
Nancy & April - Thanks for the 2 days at the Chalet. We all had a great time. It's always nice to be able to get away for a couple of days for family time. Everyone thought the Chalet was great. Nicely decorated and all the comforts of home and then some. Thanks again and have a Happy New Year.

Our family is not photogenic. Everyone in our family has contributed something to the Boulder Bay Chalet to make it comfortable, cozy and relazing. The cleaning staff works hard to keep the Chalet clean and in the proper order so you can find everything you need. They must be doing something right because they get sizable tips frequently. We look at the Boulder Bay Chalet as a service for those in need of a vacation. If you can't find something to do there, you are not looking.

Nancy purchased this house in 2007

This warm and wonderful spot on the lake makes you relax even if you want to work.

Healthy people are happy people.

Relaxation is an essential part of good health

We have stocked this home with everything we can think of to make your stay comfy, cozy and easy. Every kitchen toy we could buy, kitchen settings in paper, beautiful Corelle, China and Crystal for those weddings and anniversaries. The beds are comfortable. The rooms are clean and neat. The fireplace even has a remote control so you can control the temperature of the house from any room. Even bed wetters can relax with the 6 bedwetter pads on site. Pets are welcome but we ask that you clean up their dropping and bring 3 extra towels per animal to dry them after they romp in the water and snow. We know you will enjoy your stay at the Boulder Bay Chalet.

What a mess

  • 1 of 5
We stayed here with our entire family. We told her we had 14 people, 8 adults and 6 kids. She assured us that there were enough beds for everyone. Why would she think that adults would sleep in bunk beds? There are 4 bedrooms, but one is filled with 2 sets of bunk beds. The loft turned out to be an attic with mattresses thrown on the floor. I don't consider that loft area. The place was filthy. It is so loaded with dusty stuffed animals and knickknacks that it can't be properly dusted. The sofa in the downstairs bedroom had food left under it. There is so much deferred maintenance it needs to be gutted and redone. Windows didn't work properly, most had no screens, a recliner was broken, there was no ladder on the pontoon boat, the paddle boat didn't work. I could go on and on.

The view is beautiful and the spot is great. But the place is a mess. Be warned. I would not recommend this property to anyone.

Owner's Response: I told this gentleman 6 times that we have a 4 bedroom house rated for 11 people & NO pull out sofas.
How can you sleep even 11 people, let alone the 14 he took, without bunk beds? I am an engineer & I don’t know how. A loft is a non private open space where the ceiling touches the floor. It is not a bedroom. Note: we provide a complete list of beds & room descriptions on every inquiry response so you can plan sleeping arrangements. He did not read it or listen when I read it to him.
Over the past seven year on average The Boulder Bay Chalet has had
499 human visitors per year (that we know about)
59 different groups per year
8 people per group average
3.5 nights per visit average
3492 people can’t all be wrong.
A “Mess” is a matter of taste.
*We are not going to reduce the number of stuffed bears for the 1 group a year that doesn’t like them. Besides, they make great pillows & are much cheaper than the pillows on the couches that keep getting torn & disappearing.
*Knickknacks are part of the charm of a mountain cabin. You should look at the pictures of a house before you rent it. What you see is what you get but we replaced the dining table to seat more.
* This group called as soon as they got in the house complaining that the drawers in the kitchen had crumbs in them. The cleaning staff went back & cleaned each & every drawer in the kitchen, complaining to me that there were no crumbs in the drawers. The day this group left, the cleaning staff found dirty utensils & food in the drawers & sticky surfaces all over the drawers & cabinets.
Additionally this gentleman decided it would be fun to take our 404 Lego-Dupro Blocks out to the SAND. The cleaning staff found the Lego-Dupros scattered all over the garage floor covered in sand. It cost me $60 to get them cleaned.
*The pedal boat has 2 sets of pedals. If you only put one person in the boat, you go in a small circle. I did tell him that.
*We do NOT have any deferred maintenance. The wind, rain, snow & 500 people per year thrash the house every year. All of the windows were checked & working, per our handyman, an hour before this group arrived. Five window cranks were broken when they left.
*I am very sorry this gentleman did not like the house. But, we couldn’t rent the most of any of house on the lake if we aren’t doing something right. We could charge more & close for a week between groups for the repairs but then fewer people could stay & play at the Boulder Bay Chalet.

KZ Family Vacation 2

  • 5 of 5
This was our second year in a row at Boulder Bay Chalet for our annual family vacation (14 of us). As mentioned by others in previous reviews this facility is spacious and has a variety of great toys. New to us this year were the 4 paddle boards which were used extensively. With all excellent recreational items on campus the only reason to leave the cabin/house was to go on some amazing hikes or into town. Before leaving we took a family vote about what we want to do next year for our family vacation. The response was unanimous: BOULDER BAY CHALET!!

Pros and Cons to this property

  • 4 of 5
This was a really great location with views from the living room and master bedroom. Master bedroom and bath are very nice and have a view deck also. Other bedrooms are OK but a little stuffy without a fan going. Kitchen was really well stocked.
It was really nice having all the toys available. The paddle boat got a lot of use, and we took the boat out every day for a spin. We also took out the paddle boards, that was great. Do this early in the am before the water gets choppy. Be careful in the canoe because it can tip over!

The boat was nice, but if you are not familiar with starting boats you may have some trouble. The people before us ran the boat out of oil and it took a LONG time for the guys in our group to get it working properly. A bit frustrating, the owners had the boat guy come out to assist, he was out there two minutes said it was fine and left -- but boat still wouldnt go into gear. Once they got the feel/hang of it, then it was fine. It is a very pleasant way to spend the afternoon.
Beware a few days before you check in you will get a huge ist of all the things they will charge you for if things get broken. We didnt have any issues and got our full deposit back.
Oh - also you pay a large cleaning fee and still have to take all the sheets off the beds, collect all the towels and put them in the laundry and pack your own garbage out. Not happy about that.

Overall a good experience (mostly because of all the toys available for use) and we would go there again.

Owner's Response: There are a couple dozen stuffed bears throughout the house to be used for door stops or back rests. With the bedroom doors propped open and the windows open, the breeze off the lake is wonderful most of the time.
The pontoon boat is checked over between each visitor. The directions are very specific to that motor. Most groups like to take advantage of having our assistant show them how to run the boat prior to using it.
Our list of things that will cause extra charges grew from theft and destruction. With 600 people using the Boulder Bay Chalet each year, someone is going to miss out on something when things are missing or broken or destroyed. Hence our list is long after the $10,000 repairs resulting from 3 groups that visited in the summer of 2012.
There is an option on the bottom of the Rental Contract that says if you don't want to take the garbage to the dump and start the dishwasher and pull the sheets, just add $35 to your rental fee. Since this can cost us as much as $100, that seems fair. Our normal cleaning fee cost us $250 or more but we only charge $225.

Had a wonderful time!

  • 5 of 5
Took the family for a weekend getaway. We stayed at the Boulder Bay Chalet and had a wonderful time! Having all of the water toys (canoes, pedal boat, pontoon boat, etc.) at your disposal is such a huge perk! Cruising in Boulder Bay in the canoes and pedal boat was a blast for the kids. Taking them fishing on the pontoon was so relaxing and fun. Caught plenty of quality fish. The owner, Nancy, was very accommodating and was very responsive to any questions that I had. The Chalet is very nice and has everything you'll need. The little touches of complimentary items was such a nice gesture. We can't wait to return in the near future! Thanks Nancy for everything!!!

This rental should have a warning sign. Be warned - the owner(s) stoop to accusing renters of property damage when faced with legit complaints about this broken down house. Be sure to take pictures of every room and everything.

My family and I followed the house rules to the letter and beyond. We were understanding when they told us the dishwater was broken,,, courteous when we reported how the faucet fell off and released a geyser of water all over all our things... patient when we reported that the DVD didn't work... and trying not to be judgmental when we shared that the kitchen skillets with rusting and toxic from all that teflon peeling off. So imagine our outrage to get accused of $725 of property damage for some bogus old lamp that didn't even turn on and an aging microwave. We answered each charge and feel she has fabricated these ridiculous claims to justify to herself going back on her word to refund some of the money for all the legit issues with the house.

Don't be fooled by the "wonderful amenities" on their website. The "stocked gourmet kitchen" needs an over haul. Pots and pans need to be replaced, microwave door doesn't close properly, kitchen faucet, dish washer and blender broken, etc. The BBQ grill was filthy and moldy. The Jacuzzi was small and very noisy in the evening. Since the houses are so close to each other, there was no "peace and quiet". We could here the neighbors party until 3 am when the sheriff came.

Their business practices are insulting and very unprofessional. I was overcharged the balance due and was constantly requesting a refund. I also had to remind her to return my security deposit which was promised.

It's best to find another rental. You can't say that you haven't been warned

Owner's Response: Between 500 and 600 guests (those are just the ones reported) enjoy their relaxing vacations and get-a-ways at the Boulder Bay Chalet each year and have since 2007 without problems. This is the third group that has done serious damage, but did not call to make arrangements for the repairs or admit they caused it. I hate dishonesty! These guests were not asked to pay for the costly damages they caused, nor was their Refundable Security Deposit withheld. I had full intention of sending them a $300 check for their incontinences, until the cleaning staff walked in after they had gone and found all the damages that they caused.
If you stay at a hotel and you break things, you pay for repairs. Why should a Vacation Rental Home be any different? We go above and beyond for our visitors.
Kitchen Faucet: It was one week old. The pull out spray handle came off. They left it in the holder and kept turning on the water? They did not tell us the handyman did not show up until 5 hours after he was suppose to be there. We sent a quick fix so they could continue their vacation. I guess they wanted the handyman with pneumonia to come over and spend 4 hours replacing it.
Broken Blender: They handed the repair person blender parts that they had broken moments before and asked her to go get them a new one, right then and did not offer to pay for it. She did and we did not charge for the trip or the new blender.
Over-stove Microwave oven: Safety is number 1. The cleaning staff called the minute they stepped in the kitchen after the visitor’s departure, to tell us the stainless steel door would not close and had a big dent in it. It was not like that when the guests arrived.
The Play Station was plugged in wrong just like I told them on the phone.
If they didn’t know about the lamp shade, how did they know it was the lamp that worked on the wall switch? They just thought the lamp didn’t work. The 6 year shade is one of a set of 3 in the Bear Room where they were so beautiful and elegant with Gold and Silver leafing and when you turned on the light they have bears in a forest scene. We have spent hours trying to find anything comparable; but we can’t..
Part of our information email provides the sheriffs phone number for loud neighboring parties after 10:00pm. Why would they wait until 3:00am to call them?
We replace the Teflon pots and pans every 3 to 4 months but we cannot control how people treat them.

KZ Summer Family Vacation

This was our pick for this years annual family vacation (7 adults, 5 children). It was everything we could have asked for and more. View was breathtaking; cabin/house was immaculate and roomy. Boated the entire family to town on the pontoon boat. We plan to return next year for sure.
