I was born in Detroit in the early 1960's and have lived in the metropolitan Detroit area my entire life - currently living in Farmington Hills which in a suburb of Detroit located in Oakland County. I am an Accountant working in the road construction industry, an avid gardener in my spare time I also enjoy traveling, good wine and great food!

Tom Ahlgren purchased this cottage in 2006

When I began my search for a vacation property I knew I wanted a property that truly had the charm and feel of what I always imagined a 'cottage' to be like. I had always thought that I would end up finding a place in Northern Michigan ('Up North' as we call it) but once I discovered and fell in love with the Saugatuck / Douglas area I knew that this is where I wanted to find a cottage. Since I had a preconceived picture of what I wanted in a cottage I always knew that I would just know in my gut when I found the perfect property. Well after months of searching and not finding that perfect property I was convinced I would have to either change my vision of what a 'cottage' should be or maybe consider other areas. One day in late June 2006 we spent the day at Oval Beach with a good friend of ours who already owned a property in Saugatuck. As we were leaving the beach he mentioned a property on Ferry Street that he wanted to show me but wasn't sure if I'd like it, but thought it was worth taking a look. You can't see the cottage from Ferry Street so we pulled up the gravel driveway. Without even getting out of the car or setting foot inside the place I knew instantly that I found exactly what I was looking for - a classic 1920's cottage! The property was already being run as a vacation rental known as 'The Squeeze Me Inn' so I contacted the owner and expressed my interest in possibly purchasing the property but wanted to see if it was a good fit and arranged a one night rental for the following weekend. As soon as we walked through the doors I was ready to make an offer and was sure there wasn't much that needed to be done to the property. Well I closed on the property and took possession two months later just in time to spend the Labor Day holiday at the cottage. We spent the next year fixing up the place (guess I had blinders on when I looked at the place because it needed a lot of work!). I've got a photo album at the cottage that shows the before & after

Heavenly, Cozy and Quaint Cottage "Sanctuary"!!!

Words cannot even express how much my family and I enjoyed our stay at this amazing cottage! It is close to everything in Saugatuck and Douglas, yet tucked away in a wooded area that gives it peaceful seclusion as well. With the beautiful gardens and deck that wrap around the back of the cottage, complete with plenty of patio furniture, a hammock, BBQ grill, fire pit and wonderful outdoor shower, along with the serene screened-in front porch so wonderful for candlelit dinners or early morning breakfasts, you may never want to set foot off the property for anything else! I know that I plan to grab a few days all to myself, just for that purpose....peaceful relaxation. The cottage is cozy, with ample living room, nice-sized and well-equipped kitchen complete with dishwasher, 1.5 baths, two very nice-sized bedrooms with extremely comfy beds, a separate loft area reminiscent of an Irish cottage loft with ladder-like stairs (great for kids or fun-loving adults), and there is even a washer and dryer! Everything you need is already there, from plenty of bright white towels, toilet paper, paper towels, to beach chairs stored on the front porch. There is a nice flat-screen TV with DVDs, and even an iPod docking station. The furnishings are top-notch, and the place is very quaintly decorated with odds and ends and wall hangings that are beach-related, adding tremendously to the charm of the place. There are many windows in the cottage, which allow you to enjoy the beautiful serenity of the surrounding gardens and wooded area, and also which allow the cottage to fill with heartwarming, soothing sunlight. The place is very well laid out, so that it allows even a group of 6 adults to enjoy a bit of separation for private conversations or restful moments. The kitchen is well-stocked with condiments, and we enjoyed many home-cooked meals there. The owner even allows pets, with special permission. We indeed brought our dogs along with us :) Huge parking area, if you have numerous vehicles or bring a boat....no worries! Safe, secluded, serene, cozy home away from home. Actually, I wanted to stay there forever, as did my kids, my brother and my nephew. Dreaming of it as I type this, to be honest with you. I cannot say enough about the owner, Tom! I booked in January, and emailed back and forth. Tom is quick to respond and amazingly helpful. Even left us a little goodie/necessity bag :) I guarantee this is where you want to be on your next vacation!!!

Lovely and comfortable

What a charming house in an ideal location. It is small, but recently renovated, well planned, very clean and quiet. Tom, the owner, keeps it stocked with everything you need, including lots of towels, spices and condiments, a week's supply of paper towels, toilet paper, and laundry detergent, and even wood for the outdoor fire pit. The extensive and lovely gardens, multiple outdoor seating areas and outdoor shower with hot water make the house feel larger. My preteen nephews loved the sleeping loft, which they named "the ship," and it was perfect for them with 2 single mattresses on the floor, but be aware that an adult can't stand up in the space, and the stairs are almost ladder-like. Tom was very welcoming and called us after we arrived to make sure everything was in order. We loved it and would definitely rent it again.

Christmas Retreat

My husband and I were looking for a pet-friendly, cozy cottage for a quiet retreat on Christmas, and this home was perfect. Everything was clean, fresh, warm and welcoming. The Christmas decorations and lights helped set the holiday mood for us during our stay too. It was simply delightful.

Saugatuck and Douglas holiday shopping was quiet and very nice compared to the hustle and bustle of the city. The local artists and shop owners were so welcoming and helpful.

Tom is a caring and accessible home owner and I so appreciated his attention to detail and kindness. We will be back. Thank you, Tom!

We spent a lovely winter weekend at this cottage. We enjoyed dining at the great local restaurants. We had great meals at Everyday People Cafe, and the Elbo Room, and the pub at Clearbrook. All were family friendly and had amazing food. Saugatuck and Douglas are beautiful in the winter and the cottage was cozy and comfortable. The owner made us feel very welcome and provided everything we might need, including logs for the fireplace. The beds are very comfortable with good sheets! The kitchen is fully outifitted. Overall the cottage is very well maintained and was very clean.

A Little Slice of Heaven

We planned a somewhat last minute small family reunion and were lucky enough to find availability at this unique and most welcoming cottage. Quietly nestled among the tree's and down a winding road, it seems you are miles away. In fact Oval Beach is down the road and a 5 minute drive, downtown Saugatuck is a short drive and Douglas is around the corner. Best of all the Brewery is down the street. The cottage is perfectly appointed and feels like home the moment you arrive. It is charming with all the creature comforts you need and has three seperate patio's, to do nothing but lounge, build a fire and enjoy the scenery. We loved it and we will be back. It is absolutely lovely and the owner is a delight to work with. Could not have been any better.
