We are a Twin Cities architect and artist who are always thrilled to spend time in Duluth. The House and Cottage on Park Point is our little place away from home to do that. We have enjoyed remodeling and updating the house and cottage and turning it into a comfortable home away from home. It's given us the opportunity to do something a little different that we can share with everyone else.

Bill Michels purchased this house in 2005

The beach is like nothing else in this part of the country, it's like being at the ocean. The water is warm enough to swim in, you can walk forever, and the infamous MN mosquito's are practically non existent because of the breezes off the lake. It's certainly a bonus to be a 15 minute walk down the beach to Canal Park or a short drive to the North Shore of Lake Superior.

We are just a bit unique in that there are two units we rent together. Put the kids in one or even grandma if she prefers to have her own quarters. Sometimes it's just a fight to see who gets the cottage!

And of course the location- beach, Canal Park, Lake Superior, the North Shore, restaurants...!

Fabulous two days. Best family vacation ever. Two buildings allow flexibility for day naps and for those who do not snooze. My family barely left the house, it was so comfortable. Everything we needed was there. Glorious kitchen with upscale stove and sink.
House was beautiful Bathroom in the house had wonderful tub and stonework. The cabin felt like a family cabin that you are coming back year after year. Beds were very comfortable. Nice sized yard.
We walked to Canal Park and to the lift bridge to see the ships arriving. We swam 3 times a day. Only a short walk though the dunes to a beautiful, clean beach. I miss it already.

Wonderful Wedding Weekend

  • 5 of 5
My wife and I rented this house with our bridal party the weekend of our wedding. When we first walked in we couldn't believe the amount of space and how nice everything was for the price we paid. Everyone in our bridal party loved it (especially the fire pit and beach access). The girls got ready in the main house on the day of the wedding while the guys got ready in the second little house (we called it the man cave). It was the perfect setting for our wedding day and couldn't have asked for a better house to stay at. Overall the experience was great and Bill was so easy to get a hold of and communicate with. The house was very clean, neat, and decorated awesomely. I would definitely recommend this house to anyone thinking of visiting Duluth, MN.

Quaint, cute and cozy in the lap of Canal Park!

  • 4 of 5
People who come to Duluth in the winter are usually there for kids hockey tournaments, cross country skiing, ice fishing, or in my case a skating competition at the DECC for my daughter. We had to be there for 4 days and I was dreading staying in a hotel that long. I contacted the fabulous owner, Bill and made arrangements to stay at this cute rental. My in-laws, hubby and son all stayed here too. It was a very cold weekend making this charming, old house a little chilly. Bill fixed that issue immediately. I loved that we could cook meals there, or go to Canal Park (about 2-3 miles away) and eat there. My hubby and son went ice fishing (don't ask how they did), while the rest of us went shopping between skating events. It was a great experience.....something we will think about doing again at next years competition. Thanks Bill!

Owner's Response: Thank you Tami, I wish I could point your son and husband in the right direction for fishing, I tried the open lake by the French River for Kamloops in January one year without luck but did see a seasoned veteran pull one in!

Wonderful Getaway for the Two of Us

  • 5 of 5
What a great place to have privacy, peace and quiet, yet you are just a few blocks from all the activities in the Duluth area. The fire pit and settings are awesome as well as all the amenities in the home. The upstairs beds have temperpedic matresses for a terrific nights sleep. The neighborhood is quiet, but watch out for the pole right in the middle of the driveway as you back out. This place beats spending nights in one of the Canal Park motels by 1000 to 1. And Bill is wonderful to deal with. When my wife got sick and we asked to push our stay back one day, he graciously did so. Thanks Bill
Lasting memories were made!

wonderful way to spend our 40th wedding anniversary!

  • 5 of 5
Thank you for the wonderful stay! Duluth has always been our favorite destination so we wanted to bring our kids and grandkids together to spend time there. The house and cottage were just perfect! Had everything we could need and more. It was close to everything and the weather was warm enough to actually swim in Superior. Loved having the lake just steps away and spent every morning and evening on the beach. Also spent lots of time around the fire pit. Loved the house and hated to leave. Beds were comfortable and the baths were well supplied. Whole house was very clean and loved the décor! Was a wonderful way to celebrate our anniversary and would love to come back to do this again!

Small Beach Wedding on Park Point

  • 4 of 5
My husband and I of almost a year spent a week at this place. It was the week before our wedding. I love this place and it brings back so many great memories looking at pictures. The house has plenty of room, but the best part is the cottage where you can store your kids :). We got married August 17th on the beach behind the house. It was a perfect day. We had a few of our family come and stay in the cottage and it was perfect. Our wedding took place on the beach and we had a BBQ set up by the house (although most people spent most the evening on the beach) We had about 50 people celebrate our wedding with us and the property and beach had no problem providing space. The fire pit is awesome. I do have to say the best part about this place is the memories it brings. See, we spent great times with family during our wedding which was the happiest time of our lives. We lost one of the dearest members of our family only a few months later on Christmas Eve day. My 30 year old beautiful sister in law who unexpectedly died in her sleep. The last great memories we have of her was here. I can see her laughing on the swing next to the fire pit still. The last pictures we have of her were taken here and I wish I was back every day since. The owner was great and we only had minor issues with the neighbors being kind of crabby about the noise (even though we didn't make too much). We didn't have a dance or music or anything and they were pretty rude. I understand that they probably work and during the week if we had been loud (which we were not just up a bit later because we were on vacation and paid a good price to enjoy it) I could see where they would be annoyed. I think they are just grumpy people who don't like seeing others have a decent time. I would recommend this to anyone who is looking to have a nice relaxing week to enjoy your family. Although, if you are loud beware of the nasty neighbors!

Owner's Response: Thank you Melissa for sharing your incredibly touching and sad story about your sister in law, our condolences for your families loss. I'm very happy that you could spend some quality time with her at The House and Cottage, it is truly what we hope to provide for our guests- a comfortable place away from home in a wonderful location.

I need to point out that we specifically discourage weddings and wedding parties at the house and cottage. It is a very popular concept but we really do not have the facilities necessary for large groups of people. Had we known that there was to be a group that large it would not have been allowed. We recommend weddings and wedding parties be held at the public park at the end of the beach or other more suitable locations off-site. I really appreciate that your party was quiet and that it did not cause the noise and disturbance that our neighbors were anticipating.

Thank you for your all of your comments and please come back for another stay!
