Polis Inland villages Farmhouse Rental Photos and Description

2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, sleeps 4 people

Kritou Terra Villa is a charming traditional stone house with a private swimming-pool located on the outskirts of the village of Kritou Terra, near the holiday beach resort of Polis. Set in a blooming garden full of bougainvillea, jasmine, roses, and geraniums, as well as lemon and almond trees, the villa enjoys complete quietness and privacy. With the nearest house over 250m away, you can really enjoy that away from it all feeling of solitude and country living. With 360 degree views of the surrounding countryside, including Kritou Terra village, the Troodos Mountains, and a glimpse of the Polis to Pomos coastline, the villa's superb secluded situation makes it perfect for family holidays, nature lovers or romantic holidays. Spa Treatments are now available in the comfort of your villa - choose from massage, reflexology, aromatherapy, facials, manicure, reiki or even your own private Yoga lesson. Prices & more details available on request, please book your session prior to arrival.

History of the house: Looking to get away from it all? This quaint hideaway is the place for you. Built in the early 1900’s, Kritou Terra Villa was originally a small granary (“Aloni” in Greek), where the annual harvest of wheat & corn was threshed and then stored every Autumn. The Aloni was converted into a home in 1989, and completely renovated again in 2002, when a swimming pool was added. Built using only traditional building materials of the locality, such as stone, solid wooden beams and bamboo, in 1996 the house was featured on a TV programme by the national broadcaster (RIK) as an example of traditional village architecture, and authentic renovation by local craftsmen. Situated at approx. 300m above sea level, in a fresh green environment, the villa completely escapes the humidity & extreme high temperatures usually found down at the coast in the midst of summer. The pool (8 x 4 m) is surrounded by a spacious patio where you can enjoy spectacular views across Kritou Terra valley.

Kritou Terra Village: Abundant fertile fields of olive and almond trees completely surround the house, and yet the charming village of Kritou Terra is just a few minutes walk away. A plentiful water supply from a natural source means that the village is always green, even in the heat of summer. Set on a hillside, amid fruit & nut trees, the village boasts a Byzantine church dating back to the 7th century (Ayia Ekaterini), and an ancient Roman road which used to connect Paphos with Polis. It is a two minute drive to Droushia village, which has several tavernas and shops. Life in the village is still very much based on agriculture, and follows the clock of the seasons: citrus harvest in Spring, wheat in Summer, and the annual olive, walnut & grape harvest in Autumn. Traditional crafts such as weaving, basket making and baking are still common. Enjoy a Cyprus coffee in one of the two traditional coffee shops, or a meal in the local taverna, there are also two grocery shops.

Activities: Looking for more than peace & relaxation in a tranquil setting? As well as those activities previously mentioned, Kritou Terra is an ideal base for hiking & hill walking (mixed wilderness & agricultural land with a very good track & path network). The whole area has interesting & varied terrain with many spectacular views & an abundance of natural & cultural interest, including forest, gorges, valleys, streams, & vineyards. Excellent hiking territory also exists nearby in the Akamas peninsula (forest and wilderness) & to the east in the mountains of Paphos Forest (Stavros tis Psokas) where wild moufflon can be seen. Birdwatching is also popular, some birds spotted include Scops owl, Bonelli’s eagle, blue roller, golden orioli, beecatcher, falcon, as well as the common Cyprus warbler, sparrow and swallow. A visit to the local environmental centre is also recommended, this centre is a pioneer in environmental education in Cyprus, as well encouraging rural revival & village renewal.

About Frances Higgins

My name is Frances and I am from Ireland, and have been living in Cyprus for the past 19 years. I've been living with my husband in Kritou Terra village for the last 10 years now, and simply can't imagine living anywhere else!

Frances Higgins purchased this farmhouse in 2004

Why Frances Higgins chose Polis Inland villages

It took me over 4 years of searching to find this particular house. Most of the traditional Cypriot village houses are built very close together with no gardens or at most only a small yard. So this house was unique in that it has no immediate neighbours, and it had plenty of space to add a pool in the garden, while still being an authentic traditional Cypriot village house.

What makes this farmhouse unique

Peace and quiet, no traffic and seclusion are some of the unique features of this property. Surrounded by fields, nature walks are only a step from the garden gate. However I fell in love with the house because of it's charming character - natural stone walls, bamboo and wooden ceilings, Greek-style blue windows and shutters, and quirky little touches such as stable doors and alcoves in the walls.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Fantastic hideaway in Cyprus. Hope we get back soon, Clive & Sam Le Tissier, Guernsey…Frances, thank you for sharing the peace & quiet of Kritou Terra Villa with us, if only for a week. It’s been the ideal place to unwind & relax in a house that feels so homely. Having spent some lazy days at the pool, we ventured on occasions to sample the recommendations in your handbook for places to eat, all excellent! We'll definitely return with our family! Mandy & Steve Larcombe, Cornwall...Beautiful pool & fantastic views. We’ve been on many holidays abroad and this had to be one of the best, Ricketts Family, Wiltshire...The website pictures don't do justice to this beautiful retreat. We've been able to relax completely surrounded by luxury. Pool is fantastic. Hope to return soon with friends. Mike & Ann Gough, Devon...What a beautiful setting! We had the most relaxing & comfortable holiday. With a toss-up between doing nothing or exploring, this place is perfect, Kyffin Jones, Leicester.

Perfect stay in a tiny Cypriot village

  • 5 of 5

I echo the comments of the others who have stayed in this lovely villa. You are perched on a hillside overlooking the tiny, friendly village of Kritou Terra. No sounds other than birds chirping, dogs barking from a distance, roosters crowing (also from a distance), children playing on the swingset in the village, and the occasional conversation from villagers wafting up, and the church bells on Sunday. The villa is perfectly situated between the ancient cities of Polis and Paphos, and a 5 minute drive from Kathikas, a village famous for its wines and multitude of tavernas. The pool was great to sit and even take a brief plunge in, in late April. Frances and Kahlil have furnished the home with everything one could need, even stocking the kitchen with a few necessary groceries. Just two heads up: the car that is included in the rental is showing its age and does not like the windy, hilly roads that one must navigate to go anywhere. And you are living a fairly authentic village life, which means conserving solar-heated water and limited availability of food to purchase or eat right in the village.

“A Perfect Retreat for Calmness & Relaxation

  • 5 of 5

A delightful villa set amongst bougainvillaea and and jasmine in a quiet hamlet set high in the hills above Polis with fantastic views from the pool and patio area that have privacy. The owner provides the little things one does not expect....robes, slippers, bathroom toiletries and a 'get you started' food pack. The supermarket, a short drive away has a wide range of supplies at a reasonable price and we filled up there finding all we required.

We were collected from the airport by the owner and dropped back with the full use of a 4 wheel drive Rav 4 as part of the package. There are plenty of towels with good quality bedlinen also provided. You will find all you need here from a washing machine to the pack light! Internet proved to be excellent and there is a signal was also excellent. There are plenty of areas to sit ...we chose the pool area in the morning most days and outside the kitchen under the vine trellis for evening meals. We ate both at home (a BBQ is provided) and at local Taverna's...although the quality here varied from poor to excellent. The house cat is friendly but does not trouble at all....he stayed outside all the time we were there ....all we did was to ensure he was fed 'on demand' ! The bedrooms are cool, dark when required and comfortable. The bathroom is adequate and proved not to be a problem with four of us sharing with plenty of hot water. The upside here ?......the calm and peace enabling relaxation to be instant......with the the larger towns close by if needed....the downside? ...having to leave so soon....this we found to be the only 'downside'! If you want this type of break... come here and enjoy. We have no hesitation in recommending, other than the fear it will become too popular !!!......A big thank you to Frances.

2012 Holiday - family from Wales UK

  • 5 of 5

This was a very attractive property and I will echo all of the comments made in previous posts. Frances was an exceptionally pleasant and accommodating host.

One of the first things that is evident is the elevation of the house, around 1500 feet above sea level. We found that this reduces the temperature by one or two degrees and the light breeze was very welcome in the August heat. The drive from Polis in the 4x4 will accomplish this climb in only 15 minutes – an exhilarating drive!

We seemed to be less affected by biting insects as well, with no problems eating outside, either beneath the vine or by the swimming pool.

The property was very well equipped, we have not encountered items like complimentary bath robes and slippers before in any of the vacation rentals properties we have stayed in – this is our 5th Home and Away holiday.

The pool was glorious, appreciated by all the family.

Finally we liked the friendly cat which also came with the rental at no extra charge!

What can we say that we have not already told Frances. The description of the villa does not do it justice once you arrive. The location is what we hoped it would be, quiet but within easy reach of the near by coastal resorts (Latchi & Polis) Having the car gave us the opportunity to get out and about if and when we wanted. The villa was more that what is required to have an enjoyable stay. Clean well maintained and the pool area is to die for. To say that Frances provided good customer sevice would be an understatement. She makes your stay even more enjoyable if that is possible. The covered area at the front of the villa prooved to be excellent when the sun was too hot and you needed a break from lazing around the pool. We spent most mornings and evenings watching the world go by. I would not hesitate to recommend this villa to any of our family and friends, but we are reluctant to do so as we would not want to share it with anyone. Having been on holiday in various countries at villas, this one by far beats them hands down. We could not praise it and our host more than we already have.

Wonderful host and villa

  • 5 of 5

If you want a beautiful character villa with stunning views in an authentic location, this is the place for you. A well kept clean property, you share the host's home.

We would recommend this delightful place to anyone who doesn't want to be on top of other tourists. Ideal for touring and walking. Close to authentic cypriot tavernas as well as the benefit of a cosmopolitan feel in the nearest beach resorts and towns. The host is always available to offer knowledgeable advice without being intrusive. The pool is wonder!

Owner's Response: Just to clarify a small point which is incorrect: you don't actually "share the host's home". Rest assured that you have the house all to yourself, and will enjoy complete privacy!

Alles was das Herz begehrt........

Aufenthalt vom 4.7.13

Wir (56+50+12) hatten eine traumhafte Zeit (3Wo.) in diesem individuell und persönlich eingerichteten Kleinod, namens Bauernhaus;

The villa is set in the traditional rural village of Kritou Terra, which is on the Laona plateau within the proposed Akamas National Park at the western tip of the island of Cyprus. It is only a short 10-minute drive to Polis town and the sandy beaches of Polis & Latchi. The famous tourist resort and beaches of Coral Bay are a 20-minute drive away, and Pafos town with its shops and buzzing night life is a 30-minute drive away. An excellent selection of tavernas & pubs can be found both in the nearby villages and in Polis.

The whole Laona area is very beautiful, with a wide variety of landscapes from coastal to hill country. Guests interested in seeing the Spring flowers should visit between the beginning of March and the end of May. The main bird migrations, when a wide variety of species may be seen, take place in Spring and Autumn. The Troodos mountains, which reach to 2000 metres, and Paphos forest (home of the moufflon, the island's indigenous mountain sheep) are close by.

Other Activities: hiking, hillwalking, birdwatching
