Overview

Laroque des Alberes Villa Rental Photos and Description

4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, private pool and stunning views

This stunning Catalan villa is set in the beautiful Alberes Pyrenean foothills.

These are the foothills of the Pyrenees that meet the Mediterranean. It has magnificent views across the Alberes, a private (8.5m x 4m) pool and is set in 5 acres of wooded hillside. The villa has 4 bedrooms across three floors and is positioned in Domaine des Alberes which sits above the picturesque Catalan town of Laroque des Alberes.

This is a beautiful medieval Catalan town that is famous in the area for being very attractive and having a fantastic setting.

The property has a spacious high beamed living room with large Catalan fireplace complete with wood burning stove. It has three bathrooms, two fully equipped kitchens, barbecue terrace, access to a tennis court, access to a very large shared pool, a large balcony with unbelievable views and very comfortable living areas.

This property is very peaceful as it is the highest property in the Alberes and therefore has no passing traffic at all. Very relaxing but at the same time you can be on one of the best beaches in France in 15 minutes.

This is the kind of villa for those who want the peace and quiet of a villa that is situated up the mountain a little but still want to have access to all the beaches and the many lovely towns and villages of the region.

About Oliver Ripley

I lived in France for many years in my youth and grew to love the interesting, varied and beautiful country.

Have been running this property for 7 years now and have really developed efficient systems for ensuring guests have a great holiday and enjoy all the benefits of the Languedoc region

Oliver Ripley purchased this villa in 2006

Why Oliver Ripley chose Laroque des Alberes

The key to this property is the sheer beauty of the location. It sits in the Alberes and is quite high up into these small mountains. The views seem to follow you around as they are present in so many areas of the villa.

There is a lovely private pool with the villa with the aforementioned views and the villa has a total of six comfortable bedrooms and is really perfect for large groups wishing to explore and enjoy this wonderful region of France. It has castles, beaches, endless vineyards, medieval villages, Barcelona and some of the best restaurants in France. You will never be bored in Languedoc.

What makes this villa unique

It has 5 bedrooms and a private pool which is not overlooked in any way.

The villa has 3 bathrooms and on the lower floor there is a annexed apartment with it private kitchen, bathroom and living areas with Sky TV and so on.

There is a lovely balcony at the property with stunning views and a barbecue area on the rear terrace with lovely views down to the Mediterranean in the distance.

As the property is quite high it is also cooler in the summer months and seem to escape that oppressive summer heat you get on the plain of Rousillon. During the evening you get the 'tramontanes' as the cooler wind from the mountain tops rolls down the mountain side and these can be very refreshing after a hit day at the beach.

All in all this is a lovely, well managed property in a very interesting and beautiful area of France.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Hello Oliver, just to let you know that we all really enjoyed our holiday, the accommodation was relaxed and comfortable, the view from the Verandah tremendous . The village and the surrounding areas are fantastic. Our only regret was that it was only a week, two weeks or even better a month would have been perfect, so much to see and do. Thank you. Fiona

What an incredible house - so quiet and so lovely

  • 5 of 5

It was better than I imagined and so well furnished - you obviouly love abstract art!! The pool was just stunning and was perfect for us and our family and we spent many days just lounging around the house itself appreciating the unbelievable views. Thanks for sorting out the vet for us as well. We are coming back. By the way the meal we had in Los Palmiers was magical and Claude was very funny

I've never been less ready to leave a place! This beautiful villa at the top of the mountain has stunning views, great facilities and is very comfortable. With it's own pool we couldn't believe the price. You should go!

Thank you so much, it really was bliss.

Great week,great place.

  • 4 of 5

The property was very comfortable and relaxed, perfect for a mixed age range from grandparents to toddler. The views from the verandah are fantastic, relax, glass of wine or three, watch the lights coming on below. The pool was toddler proof and the barbecue area a treat. The local village was lovely and friendly, would reccommend the Cafe desArtistes for coffee, snacks, Restaurant La Catalan for first class food. On the coast, good seafood to be had in Colliour and at ArgelesPlage, the latter less expensive, however the beaches have weird sand, very gritty. The large water park near St.Cyprien was enjoyed by the children and younger adults. Further afield VilleFrancheDeConflent is well worth visiting, especially the caves. Our only regret was that we only had a week as their is so much to see in the area.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the lovely feedback. You are right, one week does not seem enough when there is so much to do in the area. Just seeing all those medieval castles would take a week alone! Please come again All the best Oliver

Interesting area, great villa

This house provided a perfect base for exploring the whole region of Pyrenees Orientales. It sits in the Alberes mountains and has stunning views.

We were a group of 8 adults who love walking and I have to say that the fact that the house sits in the Alberes mean that you just have to walk out of the door and there is a myriad of clearly marked paths which allow you to explore the stunning forests that separate France and Spain. One day we climbed to the top and found an ancient chapel and just sat there for hours admiring the views.

We also walked higher up in the Pyrenees towards the Canigou which was harder walking but very scenic.

My key recommendation to anyone is to take the Train Jeune. It is the best way to leisurely see what is one of the most beautiful areas in France – in an open top train along a narrow gauge train. A great day out and was one of the highlights of the holiday.

When we were not walking were exploring and found the villages in the Pyrenees just glorious and so beautifully early medieval. So many ancient monasteries and stunning fortresses – Montesegur was our favourite. On the coast we felt Collioure was amazing and the restaurants there were numerous and very high quality. We also loved Argeles which is bit more of a chips and beer place but the beach was huge and lovely. The sea food restaurants in Port Vendres are lovely as well and for €20 you can get a delicious 3 course meal.

All in all a very interesting region of France and I found the villa was just so perfect as it was very lovingly put together and provided the peace and serenity you need for a very relaxing holiday.

We will return

Breathtaking views, well furnished, lovely owner

I will never forget this villa. The setting is just outstanding. It sits on top of a group of houses on the side of the hillside and has incredible views across the Alberes to the Med in the distance. The sunsets are incredible and it is just so peaceful.

We loved the facilities. The kitchen is brand new and very modern and is perfect for preparing good meals. The barbecue area is great as well and is shaded which is great as lunchtime can be quite a hot time of day. Go to the markets in Ceret and Collioure for superb local produce. The local Carrefour is actually very good as well and very near.

You should spend time up in the mountains as well. The area is very historic and medieval and there are some beautiful villages as you go up into the Pyrenees. Try the road that takes you up to Prades. It is a little bit wild but very interesting.

Superb beaches very near the villa. The biggest and best is North Argeles which is very big, never crowded and then you just pop into Argeles for lunch and shopping. Very convenient and there are life guards always present.

Overall we had a great time. The villa is lovely, very peaceful yet very easy to get places. The region is great as well. We had not been here before but we will be coming back.

Many thanks to Elaine, she was very good and really helped us

Just glorious

We stayed for a week last year and I have to say it was just perfect.

To begin with Oliver responded to all our questions about the villa and local area very quickly and even recommended which car hire firm we should use and so the preparations was perfect. He really helped us plan our trip and therefore we knew what to do once we got there.

We got there and I have to say that the location of this property is simply stunning. You feel as though you are on top of the world with just amazing views down the valley. I spent many a happy afternoon just floating in the swimming pool, staring down the valley and watching the wonderful birdlife of the Alberes.

The villa has everything you need for a comfortable stay and Elaine is just so fantastic. We had a problem with the pool and she was up that evening and we had the problem solved very quickly. She is so friendly. I also loved the new kitchen, very modern and with all the mod-cons. Useful when we do not feel like barbecuing.

The area is stunning and a little bit undiscovered as there are not the huge amounts of tourists in other areas so I would recommend this place to people who want to chill out a little and like good food and love the mountains and long sandy beaches. Collioure is just amazing and a little bit glamorous with a huge range of high quality restaurants. Argeles has the best beach (actually Le Racou was our favourite) and is great for kids.

Have already booked my next trip and I can highly recommend this villa.

This villa sits in the magnificent Alberes mountain range. These are the foothills of the Pyrenees that meet the Mediterranean. It is pretty much the highest property in the Alberes and therefore it is very quiet and has no passing traffic noise at all. It also has the most incredible views towards the Med and you can just sit and gaze at the wonderful views from the private pool, the balcony or the dining terrace.

There is immediate access directly from the property to mountain walks in the Alberes. This is a Foret Nationale and is a protected biosphere with interesting wildlife - even wild boars are seen quite frequently and there are the wild goats that eat my roses. A little bit annoying but they are very friendly.

Even though the property feels remote, within 5 minutes you can be in Laroque des Alberes. This is a charming Catalan medieval town with a lovely circular fort at the centre of it. There are a few great restaurants (one has a Michelin star) and it has all the cafes, boulangeries, patisseries that you would expect from a French village. It also has a Carrefour supermarket for all those essentials, an English speaking chemist and the best pizzeria in the whole of France.

This area has some of the best beaches in France. The nearest is around 15 minutes away and it was recently voted as being one of the best beaches in France. It is a very long sandy beach with the mountains as the backdrop and they never get too crowded, not even in the middle of summer. They are “blue flag” beaches meaning that they are monitored for cleanliness and there are always life guards in attendance.

The beautiful town of Collioure is around 15 min from the property and is just stunning. It is well known for being one of the most beautiful towns on the Med and is famous as it is seen as the home of the fauvist art movement. Matisse, Picasso and Derain all lived there and they all painted Collioure. They said it had perfect light and in fact if you go to the Modern Art museum in Ceret there is the largest collection of Picasso pottery anywhere in the world. Ceret also has some stunning medieval squares and churches and fantastic market on Saturday.

There are many interesting historical towns nearby including Perpignan, Amelie les Bains, Carcassone which all have weekly markets and are well worth a visit.

Spain is only 30 minutes away and the famous Dali museum is only 40 min away in Figueras. Additionally the famous Cathar fortresses such as Montesequr are around 1.5 hours away and are an incredible day trip.

Barcelona is also accessible from this villa for a day trip as it is about 2.5 hours away and has many museums and the wonderful Sagrada Familia as well.

If you drive towards the central Pyrenees along the N116 you will see the so many lovely medieval towns such as Villefranche-de-Conflent and it is truly a lovely drive with so many things to stop and see. A fantastic drive with history all around you and those stunning Cathar fortresses.
