In the 1930s, our town was idling along, minding its own business, when Yosemite National Park, previously a neighbor, expanded its borders and surrounded the town. Ever since, Wawona has been entirely within Yosemite. This rare situation, known as an inholding, is a fact of life for locals but makes Wawona very special. It is a tremendous privilege to live or visit here, as is reflected in the pride people take in welcoming others, enjoying and preserving the resource of the Park, and appreciating how fortunate our small town is.
From Wawona, there are trails to nearby areas of great beauty, such as the South Fork of the Merced River, the Grove of Giant Redwoods, the Lower and Upper Chilnualna Falls, Meadow Loop road, and many other. This is the country that Galen Clark and other Yosemite Pioneers homesteaded. There are trails that lead throughout the 1000+ square miles of Yosemite. Many hike and some ride these trails. Badger Pass and Yosemite Valley are easily reached.
