Cute cottage BUT...

  • 2 of 5

My family rented this April 2015 for 10 days. I usually don't take the time to write a review on places that we stayed before, because we mostly stayed in great places. However, I think that you should read my comments before renting this cottage. You might think twice before. Here is why : According to the information and photos of the cottage on the website and sended by the manager (Sandra Tenus), we thought that this place will be perfect for our stay. She send great information and assured me that it is a safe location to rent. When we arrived to the location, there was nobody waiting for us to give us the keys. We wait for a while and even went to the owner’s house, but nobody was there. We took the initiative to enter the house and by surprise, the door wasn’t locked. So we figured that we could settle our stuffs.

At first glance, the house looks very clean and convenient. However, the shower on the ground floor did not have much water to take a shower. The shower on the 2nd floor was stronger, but the bathroom is made for small people. I'm not a tall person (4,11), but I had to sit in the tub to take a shower. Otherwise, my shoulders touch the ceiling. The kitchen is very convenient, but you should clean the ustensils and accessories, as there were few cockroaches in the kitchen drawers.

Also, do not trust the pictures of the exterior of the house. They do not correspond to reality. The beach located behind the house is not well maintained nor cleaned unlike the pictures on the website.

However, it is not these drawbacks which have ruined our vacation, is the money that was stolen from one of our suitcases. If you rent this place, make sure not only to lock the door of the house, but the windows and all your suitcases. Also, beware of the cleaning lady. Our money was stolen when she was in service. After this incident, we locked our suitcases with a lock before leaving home. When we got home, the lock of the suitcase that contained our money stolen, was damaged. As if someone forced the hole to insert the key and tried to break the lock (luckily I had a solid lock). The house had been no infringement. So we assume that the thief has a duplicate key of the house. Only the owners could have those keys or the cleaning lady. Again, she was on duty that day. The owners could not do anything because we did not have evidence to identify her. My advice, if you still want to rent this cottage, just be more careful than you usually do.

A Great Vacation

  • 5 of 5

My friend and I rented this cottage and absolutely loved it. We loved that it was on the east end of the island, away from the tourist area yet close to Rum Point, the most awesome beach ever. Gary and Nadine were very cool and we had many laughs with them. There was plenty do to nearby, went to Rum Point everyday which was about 15 minutes away. The cottage was great, so cute and comfortable. We were very happy we had chosen to stay here...it really made us happy...we had such an increduble time and will definitely come back...just a few notes, not negatives..the staircase upstairs is fairly narrow and probably not good for "large adults"...the beach right out front of the place is beautiful, but not good for swimming as it's rocky and weedy..but like I said Rum Point is 15 minute drive...Over the edge is a great place to eat (on the way ro Rum Point)..the island is very easy to get around and driving on the left was no problem....this is a beautiful island and this cottage was a fabulous place to stay....so loved it.....the weather at the beginning of April was spectacular...

Owner's Response: Thank you for your great review and we are happy that you enjoyed your stay in our Cottage by the Sea in Grand Cayman. Whilst you can swim outside in the ocean, it is probably best for snorkelling as the fish congregate around the old pillars from the pier that IVAN blew away. Look forward to seeing you again!

We arrived on Mon. 28th. We rented a car stopped at Foster's and headed to the Cottage. It was a little hard to find, just needed to know that if you pass the Morrits you've gone to far.

What a beautiful little place to spend your vacation. We had our own private beach that was awesome.

The Cottage looks just like the pictures and there is a light in the upstairs bathroom. I did notice that the couch does not pull out into a bed. It was clean, I did wipe down the bathroom it was a little dusty, no big deal.

The person staying at the main house was very nice, friendly, and helped us if we needed anything. We walked to the Reef and Morrits to rent snorkel gear. They also had no problem with us using there pool. We did however have a nice tab at the bar.

We traveled to Rum Point had a fun day and thought Portifino's was really good too.

We had a wonderful time and will definitely be back.

a great holiday!

  • 5 of 5

Timing is everything--when we were there with our two teens during spring break in March, the weather was fantastic and the cottage was just what we needed. We were able to keep our costs down by eating breakfast in and most lunches. We made a couple of dinners in but treated ourselves to a nice evening out on the other nights for the week we were there. The time share up the road had a nice and reasonable restaurant, Vivienne's Kitchen gave us a taste of island food, and for a very special birthday celebration, we went all out at Rum Point--that was a memorable meal! So many things to do and see on the island, especially if you like outdoor activities and the sun and surf. Of course you need a car to get around, but it was nice to be able to go anywhere on the island and feel safe as well. The location was well away from the "madding crowd" and tourist areas, so you really felt like a local and could also relax. The cottage was clean and comfortable--any concerns we had were always taken care of promptly by Nadine and Gary, both of who are wonderful people! If you're looking for an alternative to a resort vacation, but still want to enjoy the island atmosphere, then this cottage will let you do that inexpensively--especially when compared to most other locations on the island.

Cottage by the Sea.

This is a very nice property, which would be good for

a couple with a child or teen. The stairs would be a problem for very small kids. There is a crib and double bed

upstairs. Our four year old had a ball and loved "her" room , the beach and jaquizzui .

You will have the beach to yourself.

The kitchen was great, having rented a number of houses and apartments, I can say the utensils are first rate.

The property is a real bargin on Grand Cayman.

Everything in the house worked, though you have to switch the wires on the dvr to switch between satalite & dvr. There is no light in the upstairs bathroom.

The propery requires a car and if you plan on being on the

East end of the island it is perfect. If you plan on going to

seven mile beach every day, plan an hour + trip each way.

Ocean Frontiers on the east end and Neptune diver on seven mile beach are great.

The best restaurant nearby is Over the edge, South Coast

grill is also good especially for lunch.

The restaurants in the Morritz are over priced and Portafino's is way over priced.

11/2-11/9 .. not quit

  • 3 of 5

OVERALL ..very nice. We had bad weather all 3 days before we had to bug out for hurricaine. BUT on the property itself .. owners were very nice. However...we tried for many days/weeks prior we ttried to obtain our "welcome package" which we never got as property manager was out of town. Many items promised where NOT there. We had NO working outside lights, we had a tub that leaked from 2nd floor (but they did have plumbers out to fix). WE had NO light in upstairs bathroom and both bathrooms could definately use some counter space for personal products. The outside light we did have blinked constatly so unusable. There was NO DVD until we requested, and NO TV as the dish kept going out. Sitting outside under deck impossible during rain as the rain comes right though. Could hardly find property at night as NO lights for address...no one there when we arrived and door was wide open. A little more attention to details and some additional glasses for beverages would big improvement. Also inside front door a mat for shoes (cause they get wet if left outside) would be a big plus. We also only had 1 wash cloth between the 4 of us. The WAsher and Dryer is there, but outside, THe jacuzzi was ice cold so we never used it.

Perhaps the fact taht the weather was just grey and rainy alll 3 days and we had NO TV (luck8ily I'd brougth some DVDs....and we did watch them) ... has clouded our opinion ... but if it had been sunny warm and 85 .... the missing amenities would have still be noticed and should be added to the household. THE BIGGEST issue was being out so far our cells did NOT work and we had NO phone unless we asked,,,we got and owners did put $10 CA on it for us .. thank God cause we had to use it to call AA for flights off island! But a working phone in such a desolate location IS a must!!! .. fior medical reasons alone!

The Reef is good for food and entertainment. Portafino's is a TOTAL RIP off ... they charged me $4.50 for CREAM for my coffee!!!

The owners of the cottage, Gary and Nadine were very nice and tried to make accomodations for us WHEN we asked .. we hope that they can take this information and incorporate it into the cottage to make it the picture perfect get away that it has the potential to be.

Owner's Response: There is nothing like a hurricane to spoil a vacation. However, prior to the actual hurricane arriving, we have lots of high (very high) winds and rain, and unfortunately, it plays havoc with the electricity. Outside lights normally do work; not with the hurricane. One of the first things to go out are the satellite dishes, as you discovered. Next is water and electricity -- you left before you lost these. I am dissapointed that these guests did not ASK Nadine and Gary for the things they wanted (washcloths and glasses) since they live right next door (less than 50 feet away) and they saw them several times -- the guests never said a thing, even though Nadine asked them if everything was fine. As to the door being open, it was -- we leave it open when we are expecting guests. The screen door, however, was closed. I don't know why this was a problem ? It also allows air flow without running the A/C. There is a land-line telephone -- knocked out with the storm, so Nadine gave them a cell phone to use. We've offered them 50% off if they'd like to return when the weather is nicer. No question it's hard to feel positive about a vacation when you have to leave 4 days after you arrive and the weather is miserable the whole time you're there.

Cayman Cottage by the Sea is located in the peaceful community of Colliers, on the East End of Grand Cayman. We are 2 minutes away from a small strip mall with full convenience store, pizza parlour and bakery. Also located across from the convenience store is the famous Caymanian 'Barefoot Man' dinner show -- a must see when you're in Cayman. 2 minutes in the opposite direction takes you to one of the best dive operators on the island, 'Ocean Frontiers'. There are great restaurants in BOTH directions.
