We had a wonderful time in Costa Rica and truly enjoyed staying at the Bali Tree House. Dennis was great and kept the pool and grounds clean and ready, as well as turning on lights for us at night while we were out. Evelia was wonderful and did a very good job cleaning each day...it was a pleasure to have her working there during our stay. We had minimal contact with Angie but she was warm and friendly, letting us know if we needed anything she was a phone call away.
We look forward to visiting again in the future.
Thanks and Pura Vida!
We just stayed at the Bali Tree House for four days, and we were so sad to leave! The house was georgous, clean and extremely comfortable. We really felt like we were staying in the trees, and loved the peace and calm surrounding the house. We also saw more animals during our stay in the house than on any other part of our vacation in Costa Rica. The tree sloth napped in the bough of a tree about 10 feet from the balcony, and we were visited by two packs of monkeys - spider monkeys and white faced monkeys! There is also a cute racoon couple that is hanging about the house, and seems to be best friends with the neighbor's dog (who also visited often). We had two kids (ages 9 and 7) and the stairs were no problem (although we were all careful). For us, the car rental was key and allowed us to come and go anytime - - the walk to Manuel Antonio or the beach is do-able, but with the hills and the heat, would probably take a bit of time. We were also impressed with Hazel, Dennis, Thomas and Esilra who took care of all our requests (even the last minute ones!). We use VRBO often, and will definitely be recommending this to our friends, and hopefully will return ourselves when we are in Costa Rica again!
If you are looking for a place to play with monkeys, watch sloths, observe toucans, and listen to howler monkeys, then this is your place!
As all the other reviews state, this house is exactly as it appears in the photos. Along with the home comes incredible service from Thomas, Hazel, and Dennis! Every need was met.
This house comfortably held four active adults who enjoyed the close proximity to the local beaches and restaurants. We fell in love with Cafe Milagro and walked there daily for snacks.
We were blown away by the value of this home as it is located in a luxurious area and truly is a unique home, well maintained, and full of character.

The house was gorgeous and as depicted in the photos. We had an amazing vacation here! We saw two species of monkeys and a sloth from the privacy of the porch!
We had some technical difficulties with the air conditioning in two of the bedrooms and the dryer wasn't working about half of the time. However, the staff was very responsive in getting things working as quickly as possible!
A couple of things to consider if you are thinking of staying here:
There are a LOT of stairs to climb to get to the road above or the parking below...about 3 flights from bottom to top...so be prepared for a workout. Also, there are two beaches that are technically walking distance from the property, but the incline is quite steep and take about 30 minutes for those who can handle the climb. We drove up and down each day.
Also, only the bedrooms (1st floor) are air conditioned. The living space (2nd floor, living room, dining area and kitchen) has ceiling fans.
The photos of the interior give a very good idea of the house: it has very nice hardwood on the main floor with an open airy feel. The house is also very clean and well-maintained. We only saw one monkey, but that was probably due to the construction next door. We used the house as a base to explore the area, so the construction noises and lack of air-conditioning on the main floor didn't bother us. However, for the price, some disclosure about the construction would have been appreciated. Likewise, we were disappointed to learn after our arrival that the jacuzzi didn't work (no discount). Probably the most important thing to note is that the property is really not walking distance to the beach for an elderly person or a child... and the road to the nearest beach is steep and in bad condition; I was not willing to try walking it by any means. But the beach is certainly worth visiting if you have 4WD. The park is about 15 minutes away by car; we saw plenty of monkeys and sloths there, even with the crowds, but the beach at Manuel Antonio park was the highlight of our trip. The kids played in the warm surf for hours. Overall this is a beautiful house; very comfortable and private.
We had not previosly been to the Manuel Antonio area and didn't know what to expect but we were very impressed with the house and its location. No, there's no ocean view but the deck is practically IN the jungle and provides beautiful scenery as well as monkey visitors! Our favorite spot was by the pool so we could see the gorgeous trees and also appreciate the design of this lovely home at the same time. We were a group of 4 adults but there is plenty of room for even more people. You are a 5 minute drive from two great beaches - we preferred Playita over Biesanz as long as you have a 4 wheel drive car. We practically had the beach to ourselves. Great location within Manuel Antonio - very close to everything but you felt completely secluded when at the house (in a good way!).
Listing description is accurate except that the pictures don't do it justice. Impeccably clean and well-maintained. The concierge (Kathrin) was incredibly helpful in planning our trip and setting us up for excursions, etc. I'd highly recommend - you won't regret choosing Bali Tree House!
In mid-April 2011, my family, including my two 60+ year old parents, wife, and 1 year old son stayed at the Bali Tree House for 3 nights during our week long visit to Manuel Antonio.
The Bali Tree House offered exactly what we were looking for in a vacation rental-a wonderful setting with a professional and helpful staff and a house with lots of character.
We didn't know what to think when pulling up late at night on a very rocky road and walking down the 30 stairs to the Bali Tree House (honestly a light is needed at the top of the stairs to safely navigate them at night-probably our only complaint), but were amazed by our 3 day stay here. We actually wish we would have stayed here longer and at the other rental we stayed at less.
The pictures on this website don't do this house justice as it is way better. The deep wood finishes on the main floor were beautiful and the living room comfortable and the wrap-around deck provided a great view-point to see many daily visitors to the Bali-Tree House-including howler monkeys, white-faced monkeys (be careful as they came onto the deck) and even a three-toed sloth right outside on the tree closest to the house.
It is about a 15 minute walk to Playitas, a stunning private beach down a gravelly road. The walk back up is tough (especially with young children), but if you can handle it or get a taxi, this beach is really nice, but is private with no amenities such as umbrella/chair rental, restrooms, food, etc.
Thomas, Kathrin, Dennis, and Evelia were very professional and Kathrin booked an amazing sailing and snorkeling tour that was the highlight of our trip, as well as an excellent guided tour of Manuel Antonio Park and excellent transportation to/from San Jose. The booklet of information about nearby restaurants and shopping that was provided also made planning for the stay less stressful. Dennis has a place on the grounds and was always there when we came in, assisting with an umbrella when the rain started, or helping with something around the house.
The pool was nice as well and the outside shower made it easy to clean up from the beach.
The house was very close to all the best restaurants and views-Cafe Milagro, Mariposa, etc.
We'd highly recommend this place to visitors of Manuel Antonio.
Manuel Antonio can be reached by a 20 minute flight from San Jose Airport (Juan Santamaria), or a beautiful 2-1/2 hour drive over mountains, through coffee plantations, down the coast through palm fields. The many small towns along the way gives one a great feel for the rural countryside, which is the true Costa Rica. Manuel Antonio is a bohemian mixture of people and places. Restaurants range from simple to five star quality. Great shopping for local crafts and art. This is not a 'surf' town like Tamarindo to the north. Lots of incredible live music. The beaches of Manuel Antonio are world class and the area is truly a tropical paradise.
Other Activities: Canopy tours, rafting, kayaking, butterfly farm
