|Minimum Stay||4 - 5 nights|
Situated on a quiet tree lined street in one of Manhattan’s most vibrant neighborhoods, Harlem’s Sankofa Guest Apartment offers an inviting and unique accommodation that is centrally located making ALL of New York City easily accessible. Nearby subways and buses take you ANYWHERE that is not in walking distance.
This European style vacation rental is on the third floor of our 100 year old renovated brownstone. There is no elevator, but what awaits you at the top is worth the climb. The apartment is modern, ultra-comfortable and perfect for singles or couples who are short or long term guests on vacation or business.
We thoroughly enjoyed our 6 night stay at Sankofa Guest Apartment. The location was great as it only took 5 minutes to reach the subway or bus with the shops also close by. The apartment was beautifully decorated and it was so cosy when we arrived back after a full day of sight seeing, to enjoy the atmosphere. Edith and Norma are such lovely people and so helpful. We couldn't believe the gorgeous fluffy towels and slippers and dressing gowns for our use. The apartment was exceptionally clean and well maintained and we certainly enjoyed the bottle of wine and chocolates on our arrival (not to mention the sumptuous muffins!). We would certainly recommend it to family and family and have actually done so
Staying at Sankofa Guest Apartment was a wonderful experience. The apartment is stunningly beautiful and has every amenity a traveller could possibly need or desire, even a footspa. The whole apartment is incredibly attractive and it is a pleasure to simply sit and admire the artwork on the walls and the furniture and finishings within the apartment. Our hostesses, Edith and Norma are incredibly warm and helpful. We feel as if we have made friends. It has added an extra dimension to our first-time New York experience to be able to stay in Harlem and be welcomed with such kindness. Within the apartment you will find NYC guidebooks and other helpful printed information to help you take advantage of your time in New York. The apartment's location is fantastic. Catching public transport is a breeze. We favoured the bus during the day to give us a better idea of the lay of the land. The subway is quick and efficient and is only a few blocks' walk through this safe neighbourhood. We walked day and night through the neighbourhood and felt perfectly comfortable. The bed is extremely comfortable and we enjoyed being able to cook breakfast each morning. Being able to wash and dry our clothes each night also allowed us to pack a little lighter than we would otherwise have been able to do. We would never, ever stay anywhere else on our next visit to Manhattan - Sankofa has it all. Thank you Edith and Norma for our wonderful visit. You and your apartment are true gems.
We stayed at Sankofa for six days. It was the best decision we EVER made for a stay in NYC. Edith and Norma are the nicest people you can imagine. The apartment is not only equipped with everything you might need, everything seems to be done with love and care. Furnishing plus artwork makes it a place you really feel at home away from home. The fridge holds everything you need for a first (and second) breakfast plus refreshments. A bottle of wine and a certificate for the very nice 'caffe Latte' are luxury! The neighbourhood is very nice and really quiet. We slept like little babies in our comfy beds.
If you want to go to Times Square etc.: The A-train takes you there in 10 minutes.
So if you go to NYC: We highly recommend Sankofa Guest House.
Thanks again to Edith and Norma for an outstanding week.
The apartment was well located and a wonderful possibility to explore New York. It is equiped with everything you need. Norma and Edith are very nice and helped wherever they can. Next time we would definitely stay there again!
We had a lovely stay at the Sankofa Guest Apartment. Edith and Norma welcomed us like old friends and made our visit to New York City the best we have had. The apartment is even more beautiful than in the pictures, and has a calming effect after a day in the city. Many mornings we lingered inside over the coffee and croissants that were provided. The frig was stocked with local beer and ginger beer and we even received a bottle of wine and a gift certificate to a nice, new restaurant nearby. The apartment was perfectly quiet and both the master bed and sofa bed were extremely comfortable. Each room is spacious and relaxing. Access to the rest of the city is easy, but the local area is so vibrant you can explore there for days. We especially enjoyed The Studio Museum, a few blocks away on 125th Street.
We booked a week at Sankofa -- and ended up adding an extra night! -- for a whirlwind business trip in NYC. Highly recommended!
Sankofa was super comfortable, well appointed and it was a pleasure to spend time with the beautiful artwork, books and artifacts. Dishwasher, gas range, oven, full refrigerator -- luxuries most New Yorkers can't imagine. Pack lighter because you've got a washer-dryer in the apartment. All the rooms are full-sized and luxurious. It's even got great closet space!
The apartment is convenient to Columbia, a nice walk to Central Park and the subways couldn't be better, just a few blocks down on Malcolm X Ave is the 3 train that goes express below 96th street and then you're ~10 minutes to the tip of the island. (You can also easily catch the orange and blue lines a few blocks over on St. Nicholas and everything goes into Columbus Circle or 42nd street for easy transfers.) Great restaurants and coffee shops in the neighborhood; plenty of delis and a fantastic grocery store a few blocks away.
We drove to NYC this trip and found street parking easily all week (with the requisite moving around for street cleaning -- even that was easy).
We enjoyed the beer in the fridge, the wine, the coffee, the pastries; Edith and Norma are fantastic and the whole stay was just so comfortable and such a great alternative to a hotel. (The whole "living like a local" experience brought back memories and has us pining to spend more time in NYC again.)
Our only regret is that they book up so fast that we may not be able to stay there again until the Fall!
What an amazing place to stay! We arrived on a cold March day and were met with such warmth and kindness it was amazing. The apartment was all we could have hoped for and more, filled with personal touches, amazing art, beautiful books and all the amenities of a home away from home. Harlem was a revelation too...if you are staying you must try Barawine Wine bar which is just around the corner, Lido for a fabulous brunch, and the Harlem Tavern if you want rowdy sports and good beer! We walked for miles and used the metro which was clean, cheap and easy once you work out the difference between Uptown and Downtown! Would definitely recommend this place to all my friends and family and if we ever come back to New York we will be sure to stay again. Thank you xx
