This is a charming, quiet, peaceful studio cottage is located in the historic Organ Mining Town site. It is part of a large walled compound on State of NM and National Historic Registries. The owners live on site in the old mercantile store, once frequented by Pat Garrett. There are free range peacocks roaming among the beautiful cacti gardens. The sun set views from the patio and cactus garden are spectacular.
It is minutes from WSMR and NASA. Easy access to NMSU, Las Cruces and Holloman AFB.
Bud and Nancy both graduated from New Mexico State University and are at this point retired. They have two married daughters with families (husbands and four grand kids) living in Las Cruces.
nancy abernathy purchased this cottage in 1973
The compound in which the cottage is located has a very special feel of peace and harmony. Many shade trees and cactus gardens along with the rock buildings and old barns give it a unique ambiance amongst the rugged, stately, and magnificent high desert Organ Mountains. Peacocks roam the area. We bought the properity approx 40 years because of its unique. true rural charm. beauty and history.
Kick back and relax - head out for great desert walks -Go on adventures in the many wonderful surrounding desert and mountain attractions White Sands, Aqurrie Strings, Baylor Canyon just minutes away. Visit near by Las Cruces, Mesilla, Tor C, Silver City, Deming, Alamogordo, Tularosa, Ruidoso, Cloudcroft! Just have a wonderful time in southern NM. Enjoy your rural historic cottage in peace and quiet.
Absolutely perfect. Original plan was 7 days but were able to extend for 3 more fabulous nights. The cottage is part of an old historic compound, Nancy and Bud lived next door in what was the merchantile. Everything was in true character, old, funky, fun, peaceful and restful, and very well appointed from kitchen to bed and bath. The fragrance from the blooming lilacs drifted through our open doors in the evening, the birds singing and everything waking up from winter sleep made the place almost magical. Our hosts were so thoughtful and kind, we had only to ask and they would give suggestions about most anything you could imagine, sights to see, best foods locations. They new their city very well and enjoyed sharing their knowledge. We will surely visit again.
Nancy and Bud were great, and the cottage itself was very nice! We especially liked the eclectic decoration! We stayed 3 nights, but it would be good for a couple staying longer in the area! Private and remote, and everything was there!
We would come back for sure!
Our stay at Bud & Nancy's stone cottage was very relaxing. The cottage was perfect for the two of us. It gave us a base site to do a lot of site-seeing in the area from and a place to come home to and relax after a busy day. Bud & Nancy were very helpful and friendly.
We have stayed at the cottage 3 times in the past year and a half (we have family in the area and stay here when we visit). Every visit has been wonderful, this cottage is perfect for our needs. We can cook if we choose or travel 10-15 minutes to Las Cruces for dining. The Saturday morning market is wonderful, you have to try the Original Las Cruces Kettle Corn, the line is long but worth the wait! Bud and Nancy are very easy to work with, knowledgeable about the area while respecting your privacy.
My wife and I couldn't have enjoyed our stay at the historic Rock Cottage any more than we did - it was very relaxing and invigorating at the same time. The cottage was quaint and very comfortable for the two of us. It had all of the necessities that we needed. Our hosts, Nancy and Bud, were extremely accommodating and were available at any time to help out with questions, directions, recommendations, etc. We were treated more like family than out-of-town visitors and it was very refreshing. The Las Cruces area has so much to offer visitors - exceptional shopping, dining, antiquing, and fantastic scenery (mountains, desert landscape, sunsets) and great weather (blue skies most of the time, bright sun most of the time, and warm). We also traveled to Carlsbad Caverns (overnight in Carlsbad), White Sands National Monument (about 35 miles away), and the Gila Cliff Dwelings (overnight in Silver City). All were unbelievable and worth the trip. Make sure to take the Sunset Stroll at White Sands. Also make sure to visit the Las Cruces market on Saturdays - about an 8 block area of Main Street in downtown Las Cruces is blocked off and has just about every vendor imaginable (artists, crafters, food, and much more). We also enjoyed Nancy and Bud's 3 peacocks, 3 horses, Mr Bill (the cockatoo), Felix (the cat), and Cowgirl (the dog). Additionally, if you are a bird-watcher, this is a great location. The pyrrhuloxia, scrub jay, and towhee abound as well as thrashers and doves. Of course, we fed them to attract them! In closing, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and plan to return. Many thanks, Nancy and Bud, for making our stay "just wonderful!!!"
We had a very relaxed, enjoyable stay and made good use of the well-equipped kitchen. The community (Organ) is historically interesting, but not much going on there these days. You will need a car, and you'll want to drive into Las Cruces or east toward White Sands and Alamogordo for most activities. Be sure to talk with the owners about local history.
Our favorite attractions in the Las Cruces area were the New Mexico Farm and Ranch Heritage Museum, and the Zuhl Collection on the NMSU campus. Would not recommend La Posada restaurant in Old Mesilla. Nice location and building, but forgettable food. Use your kitchen at the Rock Cottage.
