Bar Harbor House Rental Photos and Description

House, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4-6)

One reason guests like to come back to our home is the neighborhood, and the neighbors. Need a break from noise and commotion? Our Snow Street Cottage is one long block away from Main Street and about five blocks from the heart of Bar Harbor. You wouldn't know it, though. The neighbors are local doctors, realtors, restaurant owners who are very friendly. The street is quiet and filled with nicely kept homes.

When we stay in Bar Harbor we enjoy waking up early and walking from our home to the shore path, around the corner, which winds around the perimeter of Bar Harbor, past the mansions and the fragrant primrose, to the wharf. The views of the Porcupine Islands are calming and peaceful. On the way back home a number of shops offer fresh pastries and a morning cup of coffee or juice to start our day.

Being so close to town, Acadia, the shore path means that you are in the heart of what makes Bar Harbor so much fun. We used to rent homes ourselves so we've taken care to make sure the beds are very comfortable, the kitchen and bath are modern, and the warm, soft glow of the original wood molding and fixtures are preserved to give you the feel of a comfortable home.

Outside, the grounds are green and colorful with summer flowers and lilies, iris and a different planting in our bathtub planter each season. We're only two blocks from the hospital and the local doctors so care is never far away if you need it. Dogs are welcome too, upon approval. Hope you'll be our guest this year!

About Herb Hess

Toni and I and the kids enjoy hiking, kayaking, Family Fun Day at Seur Des Monts in Acadia (in July). We've been vacationing in Bar Harbor every summer since about 1998. We all enjoy the friendships we have formed here, which have lead to visits back to the Island every Thanksgiving as well. When we're not here we enjoy gardening, rollerskating and rollerblading, the beach, and hangin' with the kids.

Herb Hess purchased this house in 2003

Why Herb Hess chose Bar Harbor

Toni and I had been vacationing in Bar Harbor for about 7 years before we decided to be part of this wonderful community. Every few years we would extend our own vacation from one week to two to ... You get the idea.

Now that we have the opportunity to share Bar Harbor with our parents and kids for a good part of the summer, we reluctantly depart but are very happy in knowing that we can share the beauty of this town, island, and National treasure with many others.

What makes this house unique

Our neighbors are also the proprietors of two local restaurants - Poor Boys and McKays.

Poor Boys has the freshest lobster and stone crab claws you'll find (other than cooking them at home). I also enjoy their blueberry Daquiris (virgin, so my kids can try it too). Be sure to tell Kathleen that Herb and Toni sent you and look for the $1 off coupons in our kitchen drawer.

McKays menu continually changes and is perfect for an American or European taste in a beautifully restored home setting, often with live entertainment and outdoor seating available, too. Say Hi to Brian when you get there.

Life would not be complete without the Farmers Market on Sunday at the YMCA parking lot from 9 to noon. We're particularly taken with the Camembert cheese rounds that we pair up with baguette bread from Hannaford's and Palacio chorizo we bring from our winter home.

We'll take these treats to Compass Harbor (see our map on this listing) for a secluded picnic, dog walk, and restful afternoon.

A delightfully simple and comfortable cottage. This was our second stay. We felt like we had arrived "home" when we checked-in and at the end of every day of adventure on the Island. You can tell that this vacation home is well-loved by it's owners and we share that sentiment. The location is a short walk to the ocean and downtown. A little longer walk into Acadia or a short drive to the park. The cottage is located in a quiet neighborhood filled with delightful people.

Great little cottage close to town

  • 4 of 5

I enjoyed my stay in this cozy, close-in cottage. It was clean, easy, and the owner could not have been more helpful.

Owner's Response: Hi Stephanie, Thank you so much for the kind words about our cottage. We enjoyed having you and I know you took advantage of all of the outdoor activities that Mount Desert Island has to offer. Help us bring that extra star to get up to five. Please let me know through a review or directly what we can do better to make your stay even better. Every year Toni and I try to work on one big thing to improve the quality of our home. We look forward to your return visit in the future. Thank you again, Herb and Toni

Great Location~ Not For Everyone~No TP Provided

  • 3 of 5

The location is close to town and close to ocean trail which is nice. It is only a few blocks away from ice cream.

,. Upon arrival the first thing you will see in the front yard is a rusty claw footed bathtub filled with plants which is not a pretty sight in my opinion.

We arrived to find no soap in the bathroom and no TP. We easily walked to town to buy these items, however, when I mentioned them being absent from the cottage, the owner e mailed me that we should bring our own soap and the TP missing was hidden somewhere. These items should be provided.

comfy bed

the cellar has pet items so if you have a pet you may like this rental

Cons...Heater is very old and we felt it was unsafe.

Too many notes all over the place on what not to do/what to do

Personal items are present.

I had to email a request for my deposit be returned after two or three weeks, rather than just receiving it which is usually the case.

Floors are unlevel which may not be good for older renters or children.

One day it was hot, but we did not use the fan provided since it was layered in dust.

Location is great, and with some changes it could be ideal.

Owner's Response: OWNER NOTE: I tried to respond to this review sooner but experienced technical difficulties with this site. Thank you for your review and your feedback. I appreciate that you enjoyed the closeness to the Shore Path and downtown. Somethings did not appeal to you such as our "shabby chic" clawfoot tub turned into a planter. Other guests have enjoyed tending to our garden and enjoying fresh basil and herbs as well as the seasonal flowers. I agree that a lack of TP does not fly. Our cleaners heard about this as soon as I heard from you and they apologized. When I did hear from you it was the day after your arrival. Had we spoken when you arrived I would have gladly had you enter the owners supply closet for the TP you needed. As for soap, we provide hand soap, however, we do expect our guests to bring their own personal hygiene items and sundries. Our "Welcome to our Home" booklet provides all of our contact information in the event that we have a "miss" like this. I'm sorry for the inconvenience to you and I do understand that it took away from your experience. The heater is not brand new, however, it is serviced annually by Dead River Oil Company and repaired or updated on a regular basis. Safety is a prime concern which is why we have smoke/CO2 hardwired alarms and a fire extinguisher handy as well. The heater has an emergency OFF switch as well. We do make our home available through VRBO. As it is our home and we enjoy it there are both personal items - paintings, found objects from the beach, and more - for your enjoyment. The notes are for your safety and to protect items like the stovetop which we ourselves broke once when a bottle fell on it. Our home has a solid foundation and a cellar. Being older, the floors do squeak. That is the difference between a home and a hotel room. We keep our fans in a closet. I apologize if you found them dusty. We clean the house ourselves before turning it over to the cleaners. I'll make sure they check the fans routinely. The deposit return delay was also unacceptable to me. It had been handled by my Administrator and I have taken back that responsibility. Thank you again for your honest comments. We clearly missed the mark on some important items. I'm glad you enjoyed most of your stay and would gladly welcome you to try us again in the future. Herb & Toni

We were absolutely delighted with the charm, comfort and convenience of the home. The owners have given thoughtful attention to small details from comfortable bedding to a fully equipped kitchen. The location was beyond perfect for easy access to a variety of activities. If you love to hike to, we found you could walk from the house to Acadia then up Dorr Mountain. There are many restaurants, museums, boat cruises easily accessed from this site.

Great Rental for Staying in Bar Harbor

  • 5 of 5

I would really place this rental in the Very Good category, It is an older renovated home, and as such has a few minor drawbacks. Plumbing has some minor inconveniences and the floors are not totally level, but overall it was a great place to stay. The owner has it very well stocked and had such items as food containers, plastic bags, even non-stick cooking spray in addition to plenty of cookware, dishes, silverware, and salt and pepper and sugar. You can tell that he uses it for his own family, because he truly does have it well stocked for a cooking vacation. The walk was a little hard on us, as we are 77 and 66. By itself it would have been fine, but doing additional walking/hiking was a little hard on old bones and joints. Also, it was a little warmer than we had planned on, so that added to walking discomfort. The closeness to the Shore Path was nice, and had it been a little cooler, the walk to town would have been nice, also. We depended solely on walking and the buses, which worked out very well for us.You do need to do some planning to make the timing work, but it is so much better than having to depend on finding a parking place. The recommended Poor Boys Gourmet and MacKays were both excellent places to eat. We also liked Cafe this Way for Breakfast, the Thirsty Whale, Beal's lobster pound in Southwest Harbor, and Nautica Pub in Birch Harbor on the Schoodic Peninsula. Jordon Pond House also had excellent food, but be sure to make reservations. All our excursions, Island Cruises out of Bass Harbor, Vagabond fishing and lobster hauling out of Southwest Harbor, the Wildwood Stables Carriage ride, and the Schoodic ferry were all great. Be sure to take the Loop Road and see Sand Beach, Thunder Hole(although we did not catch it for the thunder), and Otter Cliffs and Point. The owner was good about answering my questions, but had not been able to update written information from his recent stay, which would have been nice. The description of location and photos of the property are accurate and the cottage is well cleaned. The queen size bed is very comfortable. Overall we had a wonderful time on our first trip to Bar Harbor and would highly recommend this rental for a nice, enjoyable family stay.

Great Bar Harbor Cottage in quiet neighborhood

  • 5 of 5

Nice cottage and close to everything. Only a couple of blocks away and you are in the center of it all. It was very cozy and everything needed for a week vacation was at the home to include the highchair for our 15 month old which made the travel easier. We also appreciated the ability to bring our dog who was able to enjoy our walks on the carriage trails. It was the first time my wife experienced Bar Harbor and this was a great experience for her. We are definitely looking forward to coming back and would stay here again.

Whale watching is virtually guaranteed by the local tour companies, Bar Harbor is home to both modern architecture as well as shops and homes from the late 1800's and early 1900's. We're about 2 blocks from the YMCA (swimming, basketball) and fenced kid's playground. Across from the Y is the ballfield.

Here's a word picture of what you will find on your visit.

From our home walk a block to Main Street and over to Main Street Market to pick up the local Mount Desert Islander or the weekly National Park Guide for a list of daily and local events, many of them free and fun for all ages. On Sundays you are a block away from the local Farmer's Market in the YMCA parking lot. The Y offers kids camp, basketball, swimming. For the under 8 year old set, the public playground behind the Y is a gem. Two blocks beyond that is Glen Mary Pool open to all throughout the summer - at no charge.

Walking into town you will quickly pass fine restaurants, ice cream parlors, wine, clothes, and specialty stores, and outdoor hiking, rockclimbing, and water activity outfitters all within a few blocks.

By now you are in the heart of town and about 3 blocks from the Harbor. The Village Green is as enjoyable as you can imagine, surrounded by Reel Pizza (dine on gourmet pizza and local beer while watching first run films), the firehouse, the National Park Visitor's Center, the Library, Churches, museums, and of course, a collection of local shops featuring Maine art, gems, clothing, and local dining from Lobster Fra Diavlo to Lobster Ice Cream.

Before you get to the Harbor, be sure to find Rodick Street, right behind the Village Green to the right of Reel Pizza. Two favorites here are Side Street Cafe (owned by big sister Jenn - always a party and often live music) and Little Sister's Creative Studio (owned by lil' sister Emily). The kids will enjoy crafts and artwork for a few hours while you enjoy some time together in the village, taking in a movie, or enjoying a local dish at the many great restaurants. There is even a 'date night' package on Friday nights where kids enjoy the Studio and a meal from the Cafe next door.

Rodick Street is also home to Morning Glory Bakery, by far the best bakery/coffee shop to get your morning started. Even Diver Ed goes there (more on him later).

On the way to the Harbor walking down Main Street, the big red wooden carved lobster lets you know you are at Ben and Bills. Try to resist the homemade fudge, confections, and ice cream if you can. (If you are successful, CJ's or MDI Ice Cream off of the Village Green will ensnare you with their own unique flavors). The aroma of pizza and the lure of boutique shopping on Cottage Street may divert you momentarily from your goal of reaching the Harbor.

Once at the Harbor enjoy spectacular views of Frenchman's Bay from Agamont Park, luxury yachts and lobster boats side by side, the Porcupine Islands, and the Little Egg Lighthouse. At low tide you will walk the 'bar' over to Bar Island. You can even drive there, but don't dally. The phrase 'tide and time wait for no man' are born out by the rapid rise in tides in the Bay of Fundy, and cars are occasionally stranded or stuck on Bar Island when their owners wait too long to drive off. You will find sea life and sea glass on the bar including crabs, snails, and sea stars (starfish).

The Harbor is also home to the Margaret Todd, a recreated 4-masted schooner with voyages daily. I like the sunset cruise myself, enjoying some soft guitar tunes and helping to hoist the sails with a half-dozen other crewmate (passengers). The serenity of the voyage and the view from the water reminds me of what Champlain saw when he discovered the island in the 1600's.

If you enjoy fishing, take a fishing rod from our home and catch a few mackerel or pollock for dinner from the pier. For an unforgettably fun, funny, and zany encounter with sea life - be sure to take the Diver Ed excursion from College of the Atlantic just up the road (under a mile). Ed and his wife have turned a vessel into an ocean-going theater. Ed dives down with a high-def camera and Mini-Ed. Together they do battle with crabs, lobsters, and sea cucumbers. Later Ed bags the critters and brings them on board for a real show. You'll see seals, porpoises, and sea lions as well.

The Harbor will also offer you opportunities to whale-watch, ride on a lobster boat, and take an ocean tour of the island to see seals, puffins, porpoises, and the spectacular beauty of Mount Desert Island.

Finally, you can leave the Harbor and walk home on the Shore Path. Remind yourself of the majesty of the Island when it was the summer retreat of the Rockefellers, Astors, and the wealthy. The view from the Shore Path is one of estates with spreading lawns on one side and Frenchman's Bay to the other. At the end of the Shore Path, walk one block and you are back home.

I know I've left out just as much as I've written about here. So much to discover!
