Welcome to the East-side of Hawaii. Kai Honu Hale or Ocean Turtle House is a 3-level oceanfront custom home in Hawaiian Beaches that was designed to make you feel as though you are floating on the water... that's how close it is to the gorgeous Pacific Ocean. Year round, from every room in this 3 bedroom 2 bath house you will get a 180-degree unobstructed views of magnificent sunrises with dolphins, turtles, and other marine life. During winter months, you will also see up close, whales passing right in front!!! What a way to enjoy your Hawaii vacation... the sound of the waves, whales singing, and ocean breezes. Another great bonus is that the house is located near the most eastern tip of the Big Island and is therefore almost always free of VOG(volcanic haze) which affects the air quality in Kona(west side) and Ka'u(soutern side)of the island. Prevailing tradewinds and seabreezes keep this haze away from our location.

This house is located in an ideal neighborhood for taking walks, jogs, or bike rides. Or if you feel like relaxing, stretch out on our comfortable lounge chairs outside where you can enjoy the sun and ocean views. It is located just 7 minutes from Pahoa town which has many restaurants to choose from (Mexican, Thai, Italian, etc...) We don't have a beach right in front but we are near to Pohoiki beach park (swimming/surf spot), the Wai Opae fish sanctuary which is great for snorkeling, and the geothermal hot ponds just down the road. Also, the Hawaii Volcano National Park is just 45 minutes away, and the new lava viewing area is only 25 minutes away(where the lava is entering the ocean).

Every room has Hawaiian-style furniture, there are 2 comfortable queen size beds and one king size bed with feather pillows and 300-thread count cotton sheets. We also have available 2 futons for added people. The master bedroom on the third floor has a 'boat-like' feel. When you lay on the bed, it feels as though you are on the water! Because of the layout of the house, each additional room also has ocean views, so no guest gets left out. The living room has 3 huge panoramic windows, letting the blue ocean permeate throughout the room where everyday you can see honus(turtles) dancing in the waves. The last bedroom is above the living room, with a loft-like setting. The kitchen has stainless steel appliances, coffee machine, and microwave. This vacation rental has all the necessities of home, including a 37' flat screened TV, and free Wi-fi internet access. Also available for use is a charcoal BBQ but you have to bring your own charcoals.

If you need advice on any spot in the Big Island, we are here for answers. We can give you informative advise being that we are from the Big Island and live here too. We are located 30-35 minutes from the Hilo airport. Check-in is from 3:00PM or after. Check-out is at 10:00AM, unless other arrangements have been made. Upon confirmation, directions will be e-mailed to you.

My husband and I are both born and raised in Hawaii. I came from Oahu and am proud to be of Hawaiian descent. My husband was born in Kona, but raised in Kalapana on the Big Island of Hawaii, before the lava came and took it away. He brought our family back to the Big Island 11 years ago where we have been ever since. The vacation rental is ours and my dad's house. My dad bought it in the hopes of moving to a peaceful, less crowded place than Oahu someday. Because we have been managing our family vacation rental for now 7 years and have enjoyed it so much, we started a professional vacation rental cleaning company called ALOHA VACATION RENTAL CLEANING LLC. We clean a total of 6 vacation rentals in Puna so if you need help finding a vacation rental please feel free to ask. Or if you are looking to start your own vacation rental please consider us to help clean and maintain it.

Our main goal is to make our malahini(tourist) love the Big Island as much as we do and we put every ounce of aloha in our rental(s) and in keeping our house(s) comfy and clean.

Liv purchased this house in 2007

The way the house is designed, you have an ocean view from anywhere in the house making it unique compared to other vacation rentals. All of us enjoy it here on the east side of the Big Island because it feels as though you are in 'true' Hawaii, not the over developed parts of Oahu, Maui and the west or Kona side of the Big Island. It is definitely a place where you can enjoy nature at its finest. Plus it is a safe place to raise our three sons and to be able to teach them the ways of Hawaii life such as fishing, diving, surfing, and farming.

The best thing about this house is seeing whales just offshore during the winter season. It is amazing to be able to sit and watch the ocean with all its marine life (turtles, fish, whales, opihi, etc...). FYI-if you are looking for turtles, you need to look under the water in the surf(polarized glasses help). They aren't sitting on the rocks in plain sight. Aloha a hui hou!

We stayed here for the first few days of our family's first trip to the Big Island and loved it! The house is exactly as described in the listing and the photos you see are exactly what you get. The view when you walk in the door out to the ocean was amazing. Every room provided the same great view and we loved the waves crashing into the rocks and like others have commented, you might get a little wet from the spray from being so close to the ocean. We really enjoyed the neighbourhood too and took lots of evening walks. It was a great starting point for exploring the Volcanoe Park and taking a drive down the ocean road to the Lava Tree State Monument Park. If we ever come back to the Big Island, we would definitely consider staying here again. Liv was great to deal with as well.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for the wonderful review. I really strive on giving all my guests a relaxing home base on their island stay with great importance on the guest knowing that it is their home away from home. I really do my best to leave my guests alone so they feel like the house is theirs, unless their is an important issue that needs to be resolved. I truly hope you do come back and visit Kai Honu Hale someday!

We were lucky to be able to stay here for 23 days. Each day if felt more like home. The pictures and description of this house were very accurate. This home was very clean and had just about everything you'd need for a great stay. I felt like Goldilocks...I had to lay down on each bed to find the one that was "just right". For us, it was the loft bedroom because we like a firmer mattress. Of course the 3rd floor bedroom had the best view, but all bedrooms have great views. I love being that close to the ocean. You're so close, that if you wear glasses and sit on the lanai very much, you'll be cleaning your glasses a lot (but, didn't mind it at all). We saw whales quite often, but most of the time, we could just see their blows and peeks of their bodies. On two occasions, we did see a whales breech. Liv was very easy to work with both before and during our stay. I would definitely recommend this place with no hesitation. We don't eat out a lot (this is how we can stay in Hawaii for a month at a time) so the only restaurant I can recommend is Merriman's in Waimea; we ate there on Valentine's Day...it was great! This was our first stay on this side of the island, except for 3 nights in the town of Volcano in 2012, as previously we stayed in Kona. Visiting Volcanoes National Park is a must. Going into Waipio Valley is also a must. Unless you're serious hikers, I would recommend the Waipio Valley Shuttle with Doug as your guide...the trip is beautiful and Doug is so full of information. We loved driving along the Hamakua Cost and I loved the town of Honoka'a. Another nice town I like is Hawi. Also took a drive to look at Pololu Valley. A must drive is the "red road". Although no longer red, it is a beautiful drive on 137. You go in and out of tree tunnels and get beautiful views of the ocean. One of the things we had never done before was to visit the Lava Tree State Park...very interesting and a beautiful walk. We also suggest driving on the Old Government Beach Road not far from the house. Can't remember the name of the road that turns into this road, but I sure Liv could direct you. It is also one of the routes that can get you to the red road. My husband did a morning walk almost every day. Didn't know if we would like staying the whole month on the wetter side of the Big Island. Loved it! Yes, we did get more rain, but it did not ruin any trips we took. If it was raining where we were, we just drove a ways and it was not very long before the rain stopped.

When we got to the house we went straight to the back door and threw open the back door! Wow! The ocean was right there! The house has so many windows! It is located in a great, quiet, non touristy neighborhood without the traffic and hubbub of Hilo or Kona. We saw turtles, whales, and even a rainbow right from the lanai! We would still be there if we could! Our bosses denied our request for a vacation extension. Thanks for sharing your home!

We had a blast staying here while we visited the Big Island. This property has just about everything to make your stay comfortable and enjoyable, and the view is to die for! We spent hours just sitting out back watching the waves crash against the rocks, even getting several visits from some sea turtles. The house gets a nice, constant breeze and stayed fairly comfortable while we were there.

You're roughly 40 minutes away from Hilo here, but the drive is so easy it doesn't seem to take that long at all. You're also just a little over an hour from Volcano and the Volcanoes National Park, but again, it doesn't feel like that long of a drive. Make sure to check out Ken's House of Pancakes in Hilo. We ended up eating there a couple of times.

This house is in a great location with breathtaking views, and Liv was a gem to work with. I highly recommend it for your trip to the Big Island!

We had a wonderful week exploring the Big Island of Hawaii and coming "home" to relax in this comfortable house was the perfect way to end each day! The ocean just outside the back door was spectacular every evening and inspiring to wake up to. The little frogs with the big voice made for a mystical touch to each evening. Puna district has a vast variety of things to see, do and explore and we filled our day doing it all. We also made a trip over to the Kona side of the Island one day and the southern most tip of the Island on another day and after each trip, filled with lots of exploring, swimming & snorkeling, we still got home with time left to relax in the evening before turning in for the night. We enjoyed being away from the crowds, feeling like we were at home in Hawaii and enjoyed staying away from the commercial atmosphere of a hotel. Thank you Livy for allowing us to borrow your lovely house!
