About Robert Spencer

I am 55 years. I have been a professioal pilot for over 35 years. I flew for Alan Funt from Candid Camera, was a pilot with Eastern Airlines in Miami during the 80's and now continue to fly various corporate aircraft. I have two children. My son is serving in the Air Force and my daughter in the Navy. I love the mountains, fishing, hiking and the outdoors in general. I enjoy sharing this cabin with folks that have the same interest as I. I get great pleasure reading the cabin guest book about the wonderful times hundreds of families have had over the years and their experiences.

Robert Spencer purchased this cabin in 2004

Why Robert Spencer chose Burnsville

I found this property to be very unique. It has more to offer than just a cabin in the mountains. First, it borders the Pisqah Natl. Forest which gives you thousands of acres of public land for you to hike and explore right out the front door. Second, it provides tons of enjoyment with Pigeon Roost Creek which wraps around the back of the cabin from fishing, swimming and listening to the sounds of the roaring creek. Third, you have privacy with no other cabins or homes within sight. Lot's to do in the local area. This is what getting away from it all is all aboutl

What makes this cabin unique

The cabin is located on a paved dead end road which gives easy access. We provide a cabin information binder at the cabin which gives you all the information you need about the cabin and the local area when you arrive. Our web site gives you plenty of information to help you decide if this cabin is right for you.

The best of the mountains

  • 5 of 5
We rented this cabin for the location (remote) and for the trout stream. We live in Western North Carolina and didn't want to travel far to enjoy our Labor Day weekend. The trout stream was everything we hoped it would be. Our 12 year old son caught 4 rainbow trout the first morning we were there and we enjoyed a trout feast for supper. The cabin was roomier than I thought it would be with a good sized bathroom/laundry room. The living room had lots of comfortable seating and a great T.V. With a TV in every bedroom, we were all happy! We were impressed with the DVD library as well as the games, especially the American Special Edition of Monopoly. I loved sitting on the couch and looking out the picture window. The beds and pillows were very comfortable! The deck that overlooks the creek was a great place to have meals. It was a hot weekend and the A/C worked very well. While we were there, we tubed the Toe River in Loafer's Glory and enjoyed driving the quilt trail in Burnsville. It is easy to get turned around on the country roads, but we always found our way around without getting lost. We enjoyed driving around the mountains, following the river, and spying the barn quilts. People in the area take a lot of pride in their property. The roads were in great shape and it is paved all the way to the cabin. Very easy access. We enjoyed having a large crate to keep our dog in when we went tubing. There is also a portable crate that we borrowed one day to take her with us. We ate all of our meals at the cabin so we can't comment on any restaurants. Our stay was way too short, but we hope to be back! Many thanks to Bob for letting us have a late checkout since no one was checking in the day we left. That was a huge bonus. We all chipped in with the clean up and agreed it was well worth saving the money that most cabins charge for a cleaning fee!

We just wanted to get away for a few days. Being familiar with Pigeon Roost, it seemed ideal. We were not at all disappointed. Our tour of the nearby trail was a highlight for sure. If you are a camera enthusiast, this is the ideal place to visit.

We were very happy with the rental. It was like a slice of heaven. It was just as great as it was described online. The property was clean, well equipped, and had all the conveniences of hte city but without the traffic and noise. The creek was the best part of the whole vacation. We loved falling asleep to the sound of the creek and waking to it. Having cofee on the deck each morning was the best. We did go rafting on the Toe River, Grandfather mountain, but the best part was coming back to the cabin. The owner gave great directions as our gps kept giving us wrong directions! We even got a call from the owner to see if all was well on the first day. We also checked out some of the local food in numerous towns. We plan on returning next year and we would definately recommend it to our friends. Thanks for sharing this slice of heaven with us!

Wonderful vacation at Pigeon Roost Cabin

  • 5 of 5
What a beautiful location! Everything was as advertized, and more. Spent a lot of time just hiking and enjoying the creek running through the property. Loved all the waterfalls, and wildlife, within feet from our door!
The cabin was clean, and well stocked with everything we needed. Very comfortable, and you can not beat falling asleep to the sound of the creek!
The managers and owner were accessible and very helpful.
Would definitely recommend Pigeon Roost Cabin to anyone wanting to relax and enjoy nature!
Oh, and if you are looking for shopping and fantastic restaurants, Asheville isn't far away! Another day trip we enjoyed was to the Linville Caverns, and driving on the Blue Ridge Parkway (breathtaking!)

A Wondful Place to Stay!

  • 5 of 5
This cabin is perfect if you are looking for a secluded location in a heavily forested area that has a creek that you really can catch trout in! There are fantastic views of the creek and countryside all around you. The cabin is exactly as decribed on the website, clean, well equiped, with fast wireless internet service, reliable satellite tv, comfortable furniture inside and out, and well stocked. The property is very secluded, you cannot see any other homes from the property and there is very little traffic on the road in front of the cabin. There are beautiful mini-farms and dozens of beautifully maintained properties filled with flowers on the road leading up to the cabin. There were plenty of deer and wild turkey all around the area and lots of butterflys on the property and around the creek. There were no mosquitos anywhere on the property! There is plenty of things to do within an hour of the cabin, we stayed for 2 weeks and found something new to do every day. The view from Roan Mountain is fantastic. The Blue Ridge Parkway is close by and there is great tubing on the Toe River close by. There are antique stores and craft shops in Burnsville, Bakersville, and Spuce Pine, and plenty of options for groceries and restaurants. The local people were all friendly and helpful and fun to talk to. Bob, the property owner, was very responsive and a pleasure to work with. He answered emails very quickly and was helpful in every way. There is a manual at the cabin that provides instructions for everything at the cabin and it also has suggestions for things to do in the local area. There are also brochures at the cabin for all of the area attractions - you do not need to go to a Visitors Information Center to look for things to do - everything you need is right in the cabin. You can easily google driving directions from the cabin to find the best route. The cabin is about 20 miles from Burnsville so you want to think about what you might need from the store, etc.. when you plan an outing. I have been renting cabins on VRBO for over 10 years and this is the best overall experience I have ever had. You can trust what you see on this website and Bob is great to work with. You will enjoy your stay at this cabin!

Just what we were looking for

  • 5 of 5
My wife and I are retired and wanted something high in the mountains where we could hike, fish and get away from it all. We wanted a place right on a creek with no other homes around. When we arrived the key was in a lock box at the front door. We walked in and opened up the living room picture window and had a wonderful view of the creek and moutain in back of the cabin. So far so good. The cabin information binder in the kitchen explained everything from what to when we arrive and leave to things to do in the area. The road that leads to the cabin ends further up the road about a mile. Tried fishing in back of the cabin and caught one small wild trout and 2 rainbows later during the day about 12" and 16" Long. Did not catch anything the next day. Fished in the river down the road (Toe River) and caught 3 more trout and some fish that I have no idea what it was. I saw an otter in the creek when fishing, I think he wanted my fish. We sat on the deck and enjoyed dinner while listening to the creek and enjoying the towering mountains around us. One day it rained all day so we watched plenty of movies that were supplied in the cabin. We brought our laptop and also played on the internet using the WIFI. The cabin had everything, sheets, towels, linens, a safe to put stuff in, dishes, you name it. We actually brought to much stuff with us not expecting everything to be there. We hiked into the mountains up a USFS trail next to the cabin over 10 miles. It was increditlbe, huge bolders and a creek cascading all the way up the trail. The thing we enjoyed the most was we had thousands of acres of public land to explore in the Pisqah Natl. Forest right in back of the cabin. We saw one black bear during our hike. We found a mom and pop country store not far in Tipton Hill about 6 miles away that had food and all kinds of stuff (locally jarred honey) including gas. The people were so nice it was like being in another world. The nearest large town was Burnsville NC about 16 miles away which has everything. Our goal was to just relax, hike, fish and get away and this placed served its purpose. All the rooms had cable TV. We plan on returning with our grandchildren when sometime in the near future. We did see lots of deer when the sun went down on the road leading to the cabin. If you ever want to sell this place please give us a call.
