Since this picture, we are much much older, we have a 5 yr old and 7 yr old now! Both made in Hawaii. We had been coming to Hawaii for 7 years before moving here full time with our family a few years ago.
Dana purchased this house in 2007
We love being close to the beach. The area is very kid friendly. We can walk to the beach in 5 minutes and when the kids get tired, be back home quickly. Magic Sands beach is a good family beach.
The house is very open and airy. It has a great Hawaiian feel.
What a relief every time I soaked in the praise from our three daughters, sons-in-laws and 4 children (2-9 yrs. old) about our fantasy vacation home. Talk about a room with a view...each and every one! To boot, they afforded us a great sense of togetherness as well as privacy as needed. Can't say enough about how convenient that each had it's own lovely bathroom. The pool size enabled it to warm up easier and play games as we could all touch the bottom! Though a lap pool it wasn't, we switched it up with treading and we got more than enough exercise enjoying walks to nearby beaches. Having it gated brought great peace of mind! Children friendly sandy beaches were a short drive from this conveniently central and frequently sunny local. The enclosed grassy area just outside was a plus too.
Dana and Joe were the best of owners! Our moving in frenzy caused us to confuse their simple instructions in locating the high chair so Joe found the time to come over! Their super helpful in-the-know tips were awesome. The property and home is very well kept. It was a wonderful combination of modern, comfort and charm. The screened in lanai could not have been more perfect in functionality, decor and atmosphere. We thought we would use the added features of up and downstairs laundry and kitchen facilities but the roominess in the upstairs kitchen was ample as was the size and quality of the machines. Indeed the 2 fridges were a blessing and a few times even the facilities. You name it- they have thought of it!
We highly recommend Joe and Dana's White House and would consider no other now! Thank you for a dream come true!
We just spent a week in the White House, with 8 adults and five little kids (age 4 and under)--in our group were three couples with kids and two single adults. The space was great, and we thought it was an excellent value. It was clean and lovely, and you could watch the sunset from the upstairs lanai. For our group, it was a really excellent place to be! The kids loved the pool, and eating on the enclosed lanai was fun. It was so close to Magic Sands, and Kahuluu Beaches, and close enough to Kailua town and everything else we wanted that it was a really splendid home base for a week.
We have two small complaints, which hardly are reasons to stay away: the kitchen knives were really dull, and the lighting in many of the rooms seemed dim at night.
The room layout is a little weird--I can't quite imagine living in a divided-up space like this house--but it ended up working out pretty well for our various family groups to have a bit of their own space, and still have spaces where we all could be. In retrospect, it may have been part of the reason I didn't feel like we were crowded in on top of each other at all.
We totally made use of the garage closet of sand toys, umbrellas, chairs, snorkels and things, and even took the kayak out one morning. We made use of the nice washer and dryer, too.
The managers were very helpful when a few things came up, and were SO easy to work with. I would definitely recommend this rental.
What a great place and great location. Short walk to Magic Sands beach for morning body surf. If you like body surfing, beware of dumping waves, it comes on fast if you're not ready for it. House is very spacious, and rooms are very well spread out so even with the 12 people in our group, we never felt cramped or couldn't find space. Having 2 washers/dryers (upstairs/downstairs) is a bonus, and every room having its own bathroom is perfect. Never did anyone had to worry about line ups or finding what they need. The kitchen is very functional, and has everything you need to prepare meals for the group. Our group mainly spent our time outdoors, either by the pool, or eating at the lanai outside. As others have mentioned, this is a very residential area, and sound does travel. Was speaking to the neighbour who's a very nice lady, but she did mention that noise does travel especially if everyone is hanging out by the lanai at night. I guess when we were there, there was a group at the end of the street who was there for Ironman so the noise from that house drowned out anything our group was making. The owners of this place is amazing. Dana was so helpful before we got there just in getting us info about the island, and nice beaches. Her husband is also a dive instructor so if people are looking to do some diving, can probably organize something through the owners directly. Will certainly stay here again if we had a big group. Thanks
All 10 of our family members had a great time there, and I agree with the descriptions. We especially liked that the screened in porch had a big table to accommodate all of us because we ate most of our meals in. The kitchen was well-equipped (except for a flexible rubber spatula and a pair of scissors!). It was very nice that condiments and other ingredients were left there for us to enjoy.
On the slightly negative side, the "comfy" sofa in the living room had down pillows which provided no support for those with back issues and, more importantly, the lighting over the sofa was non-existent. It would have been nice to have a fan-light combo there for reading in the evenings. Also, while some of the lamps were energy-saving florescent, not all of them were, which annoyed some of our environmentally conscious members.
We requested a DVD player, which the owner kindly provided for us when we arrived, but it meant removing the video tape recorder. That was too bad because there were a lot of VHS tapes provided--but no player while we were there. Not that we had time to watch them, but someone else might want to.
The place was well-screened against mosquitoes except for the kitchen window, which has some small holes in it.
The master bedroom was very comfortable, with two lovely showers, but the sheets weren't soft and smooth and they smelled of too much chlorine. In that room there was always a nice breeze because of the cross ventilation. However, if you are a light sleeper, the next-door neighbor wakes up very early, and one can hear the sounds of breakfast dishes. Also, in the upstairs bedroom labeled "Turtle" there wasn't good ventilation and it was uncomfortably warm during the day.
It was nice to have a pool for the kids to play in, but there isn't a pool sweep, so there were some leaves and such in it. Not a problem for us, but you might want to be aware of it if someone is finicky.
All in all, it was a lovely home, tastefully furnished and very spacious, with a great location. We would definitely stay there again if we return to the island.
We are a large family. We recently stayed at this spectacular vacation rental. There was plenty of room for all 16 of us. There were 6 bedrooms, each with their own bathroom. There was a large screened in lanai with a huge table. This is where we loved to eat. The living room had a wrap around couch and was spacious. There was always a breeze running through the house, so we kept cool. The house was spotless, and the owners were wonderful. They were nearby and happy to help give us recommendations of great places to go. There were two beaches close by, one of which had amazing snorkeling, and we even saw a turtle lounging on the sand. We had young toddlers with us, and with the close proximity to the beach, it made it easy to get back home for naps or when they got cranky. This house is very kid friendly. The pool was great to hang out at, too. The pool is fenced in so the kids couldn't get to it unless we wanted them to. I highly recommend this rental and will definitely stay here next time we come out.
This is a really lovely home to spend time with a larger group in Hawaii. The way that the home is situated is perfect. We were a group of 10 friends and family and there was a spot for everyone, kids, couples, singles, teenagers. The living and dining areas were wonderful for gathering. The kitchen is well stocked and easy to work in. The rooms are clean and comfortable and because there is lots of space between the rooms you felt that you could also have some privacy. Absolutely no complaints!
You can walk down to the White Sands beach for a spontaneous swim any time. The road is a little busy and not ideal for walking with small children. But it's not far, just a block with a tight hand on your kid and you are there. Kahaluu Beach Park is a great spot for snorkeling, the bay is protected and my kids really got the hang of it. There are volunteers there who provide education about the reef and the animals, so we got so much more than we expected out of it.
So much about staying here was easy that it was a true vacation.
