We also have great guest reviews on Trip Advisor.
I was really surprised by the previous negative review. We found the cottage immaculate, with everything in working order..the outdoor shower was even clean as can be! The whole cottage is very charming....tile floors on both levels...the upstairs bedroom has cathedral ceilings and was huge. Great screened in porch and it's a short 15 minute drive into town. Marc was great to work with and very prompt in returning my calls and e-mails. One mistake that was made by me was renting a sedan...the steep hills on the island really require a jeep.
My companion and I both fell head over heals in love with St. John and can't wait to return someday...we'll definitely be renting here again!
We were booked for two nights, first night we were there:
- Air conditioner did not work, I called Marc on both numbers provided to us, left a VM asking if there was something we had to do to make it work, no response.
- None of the power outlets on the bedroom level worked except one in the powder room. That meant we could only charge one phone at a time. I'd mentioned this on the VM too.
- Wifi should probably not even be listed as an amenity provided. There was only one place near the window that had very spotty coverage.
- The shower had about 10 grass hoppers, different kinds of bugs, some roaches!!
- We had NOT heard back/seen the owner on the next morning even, so decided not to stay any longer. We paid advance for one night and that was it for us. Found another B&B in Cruz bay that was so much better!
Stayed at Sol Cottage for a week with my new wife and had a great time. Sol Cottage is just the right size for a getaway and was very comfortable. Marc was quick to respond to anything we needed, he even replaced a broken beach chair immediately after I told him about it. It's a decent drive from Cruz Bay so a car is definitely required, but there's parking right in front of the cottage and we enjoyed the drive. Also, according to my wife, his dog Quincy is the cutest dog on the island...
My husband and I stayed at Sol for Thanksgiving week 2010. We originally were going to stay at one of the camp grounds due to budget constraints, but found Sol to be competatively priced yet more comfortable. We planned an active vacation , hitting different beaches and areas of the island every day. So sol's location met our needs perfectly. Marc the owner and his dog quincey were freindly, unobtrusive and helpful. If you are looking for a comfortable, clean and quite place to spend your evenings sol should more than meet your needs. Airconditioned bedroom loft with queen bed and half bath, comfortable downstairs living room with TV , Stereo and Kitchenette, adjacent full bath (romantic outdoor shower) and charming indies style screened porch. Simply beats camping with the bugs anyday but for the same price.
My sister and I just returned from a five night stay at Sol Cottage. Not only is the cottage beautiful, but it is affordable and close enough to town to be convenient yet quietly tucked away. I loved the outdoor shower! It is so nice to have such a beautiful place to stay that is also affordable considering how expensive St. John can be. The island itself is amazing and we can't wait to return. Sol Cottage is highly recommended!
We also LOVED Quincy!
My husband and I just returned from celebrating our anniversary in St. John at Sol Cottage. It was truly paradise! The cottage is exactly like the pictures show - super clean and comfortable. I loved the loft with the spiral stairs and the outdoor shower (which was really interesting in the rain!) The owner was very nice and even though he lives right on the property, the cottage feels private. The island had amazing beaches, great hiking, the best snorkeling, fun little bars, and great restaurants. Plus, the money we saved by staying at Sol Cottage instead of a big resort meant more fun on the island for us! We loved St. John and Sol Cottage, and hope be able to go back for our next anniversary!
