Our Jewel by the Sea - Mika Lani is an exceptional vacation home, located on a beautiful protected snorkel bay containing colorful tropical fish and coral, with the ocean reef just beyond. You will be immersed in this aquatic wonderland just a few steps away from this private oceanfront retreat. There are many windows allowing for breathtaking views. This is a romantic, enchanting get-away for two. Every amenity inside is luxurious, from the silk-like linens to the granite gourmet kitchen, from the Japanese dinnerware to the decorator touches in the furnishings. It includes high speed Internet and WiFi, flat screen TV, well-stocked kitchen (just bring your fresh foods), snorkels, fins, beach reef shoes, beach towels, 2 kayaks, other aquatic amenities, guide books and insider information to make your Big Island Hawaiian vacation special and memorable. Sip your favorite beverage while relaxing in the oceanfront jacuzzi. Total serenity is yours. Just pack your swim suit and come on over.
Mika Lani is designed for two people only. It could be your honeymoon, a romantic get away, or any special occasion. Upgrades abound so that you have the comforts and amenities of home, yet far far from home. The home is small, yet roomy – just one bedroom with 2 upscale bathrooms. Every room has a view of the ocean. The surrounding lanai (deck) is huge with three sides facing the ocean. You will delight in the jacuzzi that sits right out on the oceanfront lanai. We have created a mini private oasis for you. The house is maintained to 5-Star standards. The décor is modern, serene, Zen-like, with Hawaiian touches scattered throughout – from the orchid sink to the wave-like tile, from abundant Hawaiian flowers to sea-foam glass highlights in many of the decorator touches.
The surrounding nature and the natural beauty of the area are astounding. Snorkeling is right outside your doorstep. The snorkel ponds are protected by a coral reef so they are calm, yet the crashing ocean waves are just beyond. We are located within a Marine Life Conservation district. One mile away, you can soak in the volcanically heated warm ponds of Ahalanui. A little farther down the road, you can surf or boogey board with the locals at Isaac Hale Beach, also known as Pohoiki. Volcano National Park is approximately one hour away. Lava viewing is available within a 15 minute drive. Black sand beaches, waterfalls, nature hikes, steam vent caves, botanical gardens and scenic drives through rain forests are all nearby. Hilo, the second largest city in the Hawaiian Islands, lies just 40 minutes away. This is old Hawaii at its natural best.

We fell in love in Hawaii and with Hawaii, and decided it had to be an intrinsic part of our lives. During the past 12 years, we have opened our vacation homes on the Hilo side of the Big Island for guests to share in our dream of Paradise. Our passion is providing you with lifetime memories of your very special trip to Hawaii.
This unique property is located just steps from the water. It is one of only 8 houses on the State Marine Preserve. The Hilo side of the Big Island is lush and green and has many exotic fruits and flowers. It is also old Hawaii at its best. It takes you off the tourist track, while you still vacation in luxury.
Our guest comments say it all. Many guests return year after year to relax and rejuvenate. Staying at Mika Lani is a gift to yourself.
The time went by so quickly - of course that's what you say when you have a really good time. Coming from California - which is experiencing a big drought - the rain was an awesome experience. We enjoyed snorkeling every day - multiple times each day...even if it was raining. Thanks so much!
My husband and I were looking for a property that was close to both the Hilo area and the volcanoes so this seemed in the middle of both. I liked the fact that it wasn't commercial with lots of people and seemed private.
What a beautiful property and the owners were very nice to deal with in setting up the reservation. They sent plenty of information that we needed in advance of our arrival.
Once we got to the island and located Mika Lani (excellent directions, by the way !!!) , we were amazed to find a wonderful home full of amenities and right on the water. No loud surf, but just the gentle tidal pools that were loaded with fish. Snorkeling was AMAZING and my husband used 3 rolls of films shooting the coral and fish in his underwater camera.
We had breakfast on the front lanai every morning to the amazing views and the birds chirping and fish jumping. What a relaxing place. You will love the serenity here.
The facility is REALLY clean, down to the BBQ Grill, hottub, and washer and dryer. There is nothing that you will need that this home doesn't supply. There are snorkel masks, fins, kayaks, towels, a nice welcoming basket of goodies and even champagne. The kitchen is VERY well equipped! Everything was thought of by the gracious hosts.
We will come back to the islands at some point and we will stay at Mika Lani again. We highly recommend this vacation rental!
Don't hesitate to rent this spot. For the price, you'll have a wonderful spot that would be hard to beat.
We highly recommend Mika Lani!
This was our second stay at Mika Lani, and I'm sure it won't be our last. We have been to Hawaii 5 times and probably stayed in 10 places, and this is definitely our favorite. The house is as advertised: roomy for 2 people, clean, well-appointed, well-maintained, equipped with kayaks, bikes, snorkel gear, and located in one of the nicest settings in the world. Snorkling in the lagoon is great; it must be some of the best in the world (although a little better if you swim out closer to the reef than in Mika Lani's front yard. Saw turtles more times than not. Stepping into the lagoon right from the front yard is amazing. Jamie is a pleasure to deal with, and very accommodating. This isn't the place to stay if you're into the resort scene, but it's perfect if you want to get away to relax in paradise at a private place you don't even want to leave for dinner.

The first time my wife and I stayed here was three years ago and we stayed for three days and that wasn't enough. This time we stayed for seven days and that still wasn't enough.
If there is a better place for a couple to spend a perfect week together, I'd like to see it.
Jamie doesn't miss a thing here and we thank her from the bottom of our hearts.

Mika Lani was all we had hoped it would be, and more. A beautifully decorated, peaceful and well equipped house on the edge of the Waiopae Tidepools with fabulous snorkling and swimming out the door--even kayaks for your use! Fresh flowers and a basket of Hawaiian goodies met us on arrival. The bed is exceptionally comfortable and it was handy to have two bathrooms This vacation rental is truly a jewel, and our four days there was not enough. What a treat to be able to use this home!
This was our second stay at Mika Lani. The location is perfect. Wake up in the morning and look out over a lagoon with the waves of the ocean at a distance.
Swim or snorkel in beautiful clear water about 5 steps from the lanai. Eat lunch or dinner on the lanai and continue to enjoy the view. At night enjoy the hot tub and look at literally thousands of stars.
The house is well equipped and immaculately clean.
Jamie provided plenty of suggestions on things to do in the area. We went to a farmer's market on Sunday and bought fish and fresh vegetables. Went for a hike through a rainforest to a beach on Monday. On Wed night another farmers market but this one had several vendors with a variety of food....Thai, Mexican, Italian, Cajun etc. A big area with picnic tables was in front of a stage with a 4 piece band playing Hawaiian music. There was a bar but many people brought their own beer and wine. The couple next to us had a table cloth, a bottle of wine and wine glasses.
In short, the house is incredible and there is plenty to do in the area. We're already planning our return for 2016.
Our 5th stay at the Jewel was amazing. Finally, swam with a Sea Turtle and took an awesome video for 15 minutes. I thought that made our vacation. Then, one morning we were sitting enjoying our coffee and saw a Humpback whale jump out of the ocean. Incredible!! The following day, while putting seed out for all of the beautiful birds, a Hawaiian Monk Seal was right at the steps to the water. What an amazing sight! After reading up on them, they are endangered and considered quite a rare sight to see. This guy was about 7 feet long and had a face like a dog. The Hawaiians call him "the dog that runs on rough water". At first glance, I thought it was a dog until I was close enough to see his enormous body. I got so excited that I scared him and he swam away. The next day, while we were hoping to see him again, we had another monk Seal swim up in front the house next door. It must have been a female. She was much smaller, lighter in color and had pretty eyes. What a great experience!
Cozy, sunny home directly on the beautiful snorkel tide pools. Colorful coral and fish just steps to the water. Merrie Monarch Hula Festival in Hilo is held each year during the week following Easter.
