Photos and Description of the Loudeac area vacation cottage rental 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom sleeps 2/3

The cottage is in the tiny hamlet of Ville es Gicquaux that comprises only two farms and one other house. It is in the heart of the peaceful Brittany countryside. The nearby forest is teeming with bird and other wildlife and provide opportunities for quiet walks. The residents speak only French and are charming, being more than pleased to meet and greet you. Our delightfully renovated cottage provides high quality accommodation. The pergola at the side of the house has a BBQ area with garden furniture and ample parking. The open plan living area comprises a living room/diner and kitchen. This has been tastefully renovated to enhance the natural features of the ancient oak beams. A wood-burning stove in the original fireplace makes a stunning focal point for the room. The living room is comfortably furnished with a large three piece suite inviting you to relax. The overall ambience is one of rural relaxation!

The cottage nestles deep in the peaceful Brittany countryside along a track leading into a beautiful forest. The bakery in nearby Gausson provides delicious croissants. The larger towns of Plougenast, Uzel and Ploeuc-sur-Lie are a ten minute drive away and have a range of shops, including a petrol station and banks. A short drive away are the beautiful sandy beaches of the north coast, where as well as safe bathing and lovely sands, Val St. Andre also boasts a top- class golf course. The quaint medieval towns of Montcontour, Quentin, Pontivy and Josselin are also close by, (yet we are close to serious shopping in St. Brieuc and Loudeac.) Also numerous small villages with good restaurants provide typical Breton food and incredibly cheap midday meals. Mur de Bretagne on the Lac de Guerledan (the largest man-made lake in Brittany) is also nearby, offering all types of water sports, safe swimming, beaches and mini golf. Cycling and rambling is also popular.

Peaceful and comfortable

Review Submitted: October 1, 2008 Date of Stay: September 2008
Pictures can't do justice to the coziness of this place or the beauty of its location. This is clearly someone's home, not just a rental. We recently stayed for 5 nights. Hot water comes on quite fast, the couch is soft, and the bed was so comfortable I didn't want to get up in the mornings. There is even a small wall-heater in the bathroom. There are no barking dogs or other noises to disturb one's enjoyment or rest. As the description says, there is plenty of land for pleasant walks. Next time I'll plan on just staying at this house instead of planning day trips out to sightsee. There is a large grocery store in nearby Ploeuc-sur-Lie.

I recommend this for anyone who wants peace, quiet, and relaxation. It is a bit removed, but don't let the first time you drive to it intimidate - we found it with no GPS, and memorized the route to and from easily.

Enjoy!

Owner's Response: We feel we have been particularly fortunate to have attracted such pleasant people to our cottage. It is like a second home to us and we are thrilled that people recognise the labour of love it truly was to turn a derelict cottage into a cosy, peaceful refuge from the hustle and bustle of daily life. We never tire of the amazing countryside and love the fact that we are tucked away in a real French corner of Brittany, yet within easy reach of both historic and good- shopping towns. We are truly delighted with the positive feed back we receive, so thank you to you all!

Peace and quiet

Denise I Canterbury, Kent
Review Submitted: September 30, 2009 Date of Stay: September 2009
You could hear the silence as we opened the car door - which is just what we wanted, a break away from the rigours of day to day working life and some peace and quiet in the countryside.

The cottage itself was very well equipped with an extremely comfortable bed, comfortable easy chairs, endless hot water - it was very roomy with a small deck beside the cottage where you could sit to enjoy the sunshine.

We were surprised by the lack of birdlife - we gather this is quite normal in Brittany - but we enjoyed hearing the owls hooting at night and appreciated the very clear starry night skies which you can only enjoy in the countryside away from city lights.

There are lots of small [very small!] villages to explore locally and some larger more tourist-orientated towns. We made two visits to the coast which were particularly enjoyable. There were good, cheap restaurants in nearby villages but we also cooked delicious 'specialities' from local 'bouchers' and enjoyed suppers on the deck.

Mostly, however, we enjoyed peace and quiet and read in the sunshine - it was a wonderful break and much enhanced by the attractive and comfortable cottage. We certainly found 'peace and tranquility in Brittany' - if that's what you are looking for, then this is the place for you!

A peaceful getaway

Jas/Thomas Oslo, Norway
Review Submitted: September 15, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2009
We found the cottage itself to be clean, comfortable, and the kitchen equipped with everything you need for cooking meals...we were expecting a small place but felt that it was actually quite big and spacious. The owners put a lot of time and love into restoring this cottage and we liked seeing the before and after pictures!

This cottage is located in the middle of the french countryside, perfect for lots of walks and bike rides. As city people, we enjoyed seeing all the cows, chickens and beautiful stone farm houses. A fox ran by the cottage one day, and every night we could hear an owl hooting in the trees outside. There are also many small towns a short drive away, many of which have market days, bakeries, and restaurants. We felt like we were seeing the real France.

We were also able to meet the owners, Gwen and Russell, who are extremely nice people!

Getting away from it all

Jeff & Mary, USA New Jersey, USA
Review Submitted: June 18, 2008 Date of Stay: August 2007
The cottage was perfect for my husband and I as a home base for our explorations of the countryside. It was quiet and well equipped and we much enjoyed having our dinner out on the little deck in the yard when weather and time permitted.

I loved being a part of the rural environment and have fond memories of my beautiful early morning jogs into the nearby town of Gausson and back.

The locals were friendly and helpful, but expect most of them to speak French exclusively and expect as many cows as people to be your neighbors.

The setting is precisely the sort of thing that we enjoy. Living in an urban area, we want to get away from noise and buildings when we are on holiday so this was lovely, scenic and peaceful...ideal.

There are some small local shops and restaurants in driving distance (the owners have a suggestion book) and a convenient bakery in Gausson. The nearest restaurant in Gausson was closed during our visit so we cannot advise you on it. Plan to do your more extensive shopping or more elaborate dining when you are out and about on your daily excursions. A car is a must.

The property was ample and comfortable for the two of us and would also work for a couple with a small child or two. The description and pictures are representative of the interior. The exterior shot makes it appear that the property is on a road, however it is just a gravel driveway that fronts the property and there is no traffic passing by. We sometimes sat right out in front to catch the last rays of the sunset.

If you are looking for quiet comfort, this is the place.

Superb hideout in Bretagne

Clar Silver Spring, MD USA
Review Submitted: June 9, 2008 Date of Stay: May 2007
I and my companion last year scoured the Web for a cottage in Brittany whence we could drive daily to the peninsula's significant sights. This one turned up as most central, affordable, agreeable in description. We took it, to discover, upon occupying it, that it is even more agreeable than its owners describe it. The owner was there when we arrived, introducing us to the amenities both in the cottage and nearby. Cottage amenities include a well-stocked and functional kitchen, living room and functioning fireplace on floor 1, and a fine double bed and bath above. Roads are paved and, for this old man, marked well. They lead to a lot of history.

Of course, the cottage can work as a hideaway for two, but for us it was a daily reliance to which to return for solace after sightseeing. We did cook some meals there successfully, having bought produce and the like en route home.

We were there in early June, and so missed the costumed Bretons featured in July, but we saw so much in uncrowded circumstances that we don't regret missing the costumes. This cottage is a find.
