About Owner

I decided to restructure this cottage and the beautiful old farmhouse which shares the grounds. The whole enterprise was a major restructuring job. In addition, fields had to be converted into gardens so so we now have 2-3 acres of olive grove and gardens. I enjoy meeting my guests from all over the world and making sure that they are well-looked after. I am very lucky in having good helpers, particularly the housekeepers and the gardener. Each year I plan a new project for the garden. Of these, the nicest so far are a secret garden, a formal Italian garden and a rose garden. The most recent project is a surprise xeric garden (local low-maintenance plants ideal for this climate) in the olive grove, and is centered on a sculpture I designed which was executed by a local craftsman. Just that small project took 9 months! I love to get guests' suggestions for new projects.

Why Owner chose Cortona

This area, the Val di Chiana is strategically located to see some of the finest parts of Tuscany. There are stunningly beautiful towns like Cortona, and the wine-producing hill-towns of Montepulciano and Montalcino. The countryside is magnificent in every season. Florence is only 1 hour away, and Rome a little more than 2 hours. This area is still unspoilt. There are excellent reasonably priced local restaurants and lots to do. We provide details and touring itineraries.

What makes this villa unique

Most guests say that the gardens and olive grove are the best features of La Colonica. Others like the dining patio and its views. All like the comfort of the house which is air-conditioned and cool in summer and cozy with an open wood fire in winter. There is much to see and do in the area: we provide itineraries. Or else, just stay at home, enjoy the sun, explore the property and its various gardens. Eat out on the patio, using our home-grown organic olive oil. Have a barbecue! Enjoy the local food and wine: buy home-made fresh pasta, or try out the local pastry-shops. Discover your favorite gelato (ice-cream). Visit the designer discount outlet malls nearby. Go to one of the many local festivals and meet the local people!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Our first visit to Tuscany. Beautiful location. Your suggestions of side trips were wonderful. We enjoyed many of the local wines and the olive oil from your property was enjoyable. We were referred to come here by relatives and will continue this tradition of telling other Canadians about this little place of beauty.

LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION!

  • 5 of 5

This is a truly wonderful place to stay but its biggest selling point is its location. We went to Florence by train in one hour, and to Siena, Assisi, Perugia, and every single wine-producing hilltown you can think of by car - all less than one hour away.

The cottage is brilliantly decorated, really spacious and has proper air-conditioning in every room. Two really good sized bedrooms and immaculately clean bathrooms. Beautiful living areas (really well-designed and decorated) but we more or less lived on the patio from breakfast on. Everything is well-cared for and you can see it. There is huge attention to detail. Very nice unobtrusive owners and staff including the cleaner who is a darling. We wanted self-catering but we ended up eating out a lot and found some great ristoranti - the owners provide a guide and do the bookings if you want. Best thing of all - once you get inside the gates of the property, its like you're in another world. We have been to Italy seven times now and this is definitely our favorite. Last but not least - the cost is very reasonable as everything is included. We are going back!

Easter in Tuscany. Perfect!

  • 5 of 5

Easter in Tuscany. What could be nicer! We loved our stay at La Colonica and used it as a base for going to Florence (more crowded than New York!), Siena and lovely hill towns in Tuscany and Umbria. There is a lot to see and Cesare the owner sent us an advance copy of itineraries and restaurants so we could plan our trip. On his advice we visited the stunning Villa La Foce Gardens which we would have missed otherwise. We had a fun day touring around Lake Trasimeno and taking the ferry to the main Island. We treated ourselves to a day at a nearby spa – San Giovanni – and it was heaven. We went to the local farmers markets nearly every day. And the wonderful pastry shop for breakfast!

There are so many reviews about La Colonica there is almost nothing to add. The house was not just clean – it gleamed! The kitchen was very important to us. Gas stove, electric oven, microwave, 3 types of coffee-maker (regular filter, French press, Italian espresso!), good size refrigerator, 2 blenders, toaster etc. Dinner service and glasses for 12. There were many special touches and here are just a few of them. Wine, water and olive oil when we arrived, flowers from the garden, robes, umbrellas, maps, books. WiFi was very fast, TV had English-language news channels. The gardens are a dream and we got to know the gardener, Claudio, a gentle giant. Anna and Rosella who kept the house spotless are wonderful and always cheerful and smiling (we took the daily maid service option – it cost extra but it was worth it for an hour or so a day ). We got to know Rocco the gentle dog and Pedro – neither are allowed in the house. We felt part of the place and we hated leaving. It was perfect. Cesare owns the estate and is the kindest, most gracious and modest host. He is completely unobtrusive but he runs this paradise to perfection. Thank you Cesare.

La Colonica exceeded our expectations!

  • 5 of 5

Our expectations were exceeded at La Colonica. The property, the villa, our hosts, and the scenery were beyond what was advertised. What a beautiful place! Exceptional value combined with the perfect setting for a Tuscan vacation.

We spent four weeks there while touring Tuscany and felt like we were in the very best place to be. Cesare and David were the most gracious, friendly, helpful and wonderful hosts. They provided us with in depth information on the best restaurants, things to see and do, and suggested the best ways to travel to each destination.

We believe La Colonica is the perfect setting. Include exceptional hosts and it is the very best place to stay while in Italy. As a matter of fact, we would enjoy living there. That said, we can't wait to return for another visit.

Perfect In Every Way!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed at La Colonica for 2 weeks, starting in late September 2014. We have traveled in Italy often since 2000, and would put this beautiful cottage home/gardens at the top of our list. Cesare and David are the perfect hosts...easy to work with, extremely helpful in every way, and have a very high standard of excellence in the properties they rent. The home itself truly feels like a home away from home. It has been restored in the true Tuscan style, with terra cotta floors and beamed ceilings. The gardens are magnificent, and very relaxing, and the kitchen has everything you need, should you choose to cook meals there. It is perfect for a family of 4 or 2 couples traveling together, as there is a split bedroom floor plan with bathrooms in suite.

Marciano della Chiana is a charming little village. We enjoyed gelato and cappacinos at Vivian Bar, pizza at Angelita's and Barbara's place, and a wonderful, fun dinner with Massimo at Vecchia Rota. Marciano is the perfect home base for exploring all that Tuscany has to offer.

Thank you to Cesare and David for providing a truly beautiful stay in magical Italia!!

Wonderful

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at La Colonica very much. We arrived in the middle of a hot August afternoon and the minute the big gates to the property were opened we knew we had made the right choice. The villa is surrounded by gardens and shade trees. Inside it was cool and welcoming. There were flowers on tables, a bottle of local white wine chilling in the fridge, and La Colonica's own olive oil as part of the staples provided. The villa was immaculately clean and amazingly comfortable. The kitchen is stocked with everything you could possibly want including a blender, food processor, dishwasher, microwave and hob and oven. All the rooms are very well furnished and have outdoor shutters and mosquito screens as well as air-conditioning. We stocked up at the very good supermarket. Herbs grow beside the dining patio. We used the barbecue a lot and just relaxed. There were some English language TV channels, DVDs and a good selection of books available but bring your own films, music and books. We did not do much sightseeing as we had just come from Rome and Florence but we particularly enjoyed a day out which included a boat trip to the island in Lake Trasimeno where we had a very good meal. It was a very relaxing time and we were happy to just enjoy the sunshine and gardens at the villa. Strangely enough our travels invariably involved a trip to the fantastic local pastry shop! The owners are delightful and never intrusive. We hope to return in 2016.

A Wonderful Vacation - 2 Weeks in Paradise

  • 5 of 5

Four adults stayed at this wonderful Cottage! Very secure, clean, spacious and nicely decorated Cottage with a beautiful view of the Tuscan Hills. The Hosts were amazing - extremely helpful and caring and provided us with everything you could possibly need. Leading up to our visit, the Hosts were so helpful via email and answered any questions we had about our upcoming visit and sightseeing possibilities. During our stay, the Hosts were available if you wanted to ask questions but never intrusive! There was a good selection of novels available and maps of local villages and cities. They even had Italian dictionaries so there was no need for me to bring my many books along! The Hosts also provided numerous itineraries of interesting day tours to take around the area and excellent suggestions on where to eat. WIFI was always working and even worked on the patio outside! We would highly recommend this Cottage to anyone wishing to visit the Tuscany area. We hope to return one day to enjoy this amazing property and the wonderful Hosts!
