Great Mission Beach House

  • 5 of 5

We were very happy with our stay at this Mission Beach house. The location is excellent close to Pacific Beach. It is only 1.5 short blocks to the ocean and 2.5 blocks to the bay. The neighborhood is full of college students but it was not noisy. This three story house has a good amount of room with a bedroom on each floor and a bathroom on the two lower floors. The kitchen is large and modem with plenty of utensils and cookware. There is a dishwasher and a washer dryer. My only problem was with the garage and parking. The garage can theoretically hold two cars but you can't maneuver them in as the alley is too narrow, especially when the neighbor across the alley parks opposite the garage door. There is very limited on street parking so realistically you should only count on parking one car on the property. The owner has provided some beach toys, beach chairs and a pack n play. I would stay here again.

Great Location-good for families

  • 4 of 5

I am a local San Diegan. Decided this year to do a "stay-cation" for Spring Break. This house is in a great location. Easy to walk to restaurants just north into Pacific Beach. Belmont Park can be walked to but it's about a mile south down the boardwalk. Also easy to walk to the beach or bay side. My complaints are this house is across the walkway from an apartment building where pot smoking goes on constantly and can be smelled regularly or at least was while we were there. Also the city never picked up the trash from the alley and by the end of the week it was pretty full. Garage is a premium plus as street parking can be difficult. They street sweep every couple of days so you have to move your car around to avoid a parking ticket. The parking ticket person actually follows the street sweeper and writes tickets as they go. Best time to move your car is in the a.m. when the locals go to work. I had my family consisting of my 14yr old, 3 yr old, and two 2yr olds. Plenty of room to sleep all three of the little ones in one room. Wife and I had the master (middle floor) and teen had the upstairs to herself, but can easily sleep 2-3 more kids. My caution to families with small kids or people who have any problems with stairs, this house has hard wood floors and stairs galore. Stairs in the garage, the front entry, and the it's three stories tall. We brought a baby-gate to block off our kiddos from the stair wells. You will need to bring NOTHING. The owners have this house well equipped. Beach toys, chairs, towels, cooking utensils. Only thing we used that we packed was our waffle maker. My family has already asked if we can do this every year and I think they may be onto something. Oh and no A/C I could see so you are at the mercy of mother nature for cooling but house has lots of windows. Locals tips: For a good affordable burger go to Five Guys on Garnet Ave and for a sweet treat you can't beat the Baked Bear on Mission Blvd. Also on the bay side The Catamaran Hotel allows public use of shade umbrellas and chairs. Enjoy!

Owner's Response: As always, we like to thank our guests for taking the time to submit a review. We were disappointed to hear about the issue you had with the pot smoking by the neighbors during your stay. We have owned this beach house since 2007 and we have stayed at our beach house many times over the years. We have never been present during a time that there has been pot smoking nor have we had any other guests inform us of this issue. It does appear this may have been an isolated incident. Most of our neighbors are year round residents so we tend to have very little partying on our court. Thank you for pointing out the trash issue in our beach community. Many residents have been petitioning with the City of San Diego to do a second weekly trash pickup. Currently, the city picks up trash only once weekly. This summer, a nonprofit advocacy group called Beautiful Mission Beach provided a second trash pickup program that we paid an additional fee to be a part of. Unfortunately this only helped the trash problem during this summer. Please go the website www.missionbeachtc.org and sign the petition to the City of San Diego for a 2nd trash pickup in the beach communities. We are glad you enjoyed your stay and appreciate your positive review. By the way, we added a waffle maker before the summer!

We truly enjoyed our stay!

My husband and I brought our adult kids w SOs and 11mo old grand-baby to this home for a beach vacation - I feel the listing accurately depicts the amenities, and we had a great time :) Close to the beach and the bay... Don't underestimate the value of a garage -SO glad we had one! We rented a Toyota Sienna (8 passenger) mini-van and it fit snugly, but just fine. Technically, there is not an extra room for the baby, but we put the pak n play in a nook / stairwell with a fan going, and he had a nice, dark quiet place to nap or sleep. I had good communication with the owners by email in the planning, and would definitely stay here again :)

A few glitches...

  • 4 of 5

We travelled in a GMC Yukon XL with a box on top. The height of the garage was fine to accommodate the box, but we could not fit in length-wise. We ended up backing the car into the garage and parking on a diagonal in order for it to fit and to be able to close the garage door. The back alley which accesses the garage is narrow, and it took us several minutes (and about a 20-point turn!) to park the car each time. The owner's only suggestion was to look for parking on the main street, which was completely unavailable and didn't feel safe at all to me. Another unfortunate detail about the house was the loud neighbors (especially in the run-down apartment complex facing the house), but I do understand it was the 4th of July holiday. The house itself seemed in need of some basic maintenance (outside yard, dirty grill), but it was overall acceptably clean (though the carpets are nowhere near "luscious," as described by the owner!). The beach and bay access was wonderful and the best thing about the house, and there was an abundance of sand toys for the kids. No large cooler as indicated, though.

Owner's Response: As always, we do appreciate reviews submitted by our guests. I believe Kathy brought up a great observation about the garage size and the parking situation at the beach. Since parking is one of the biggest problems at the beach, we have always provided the garage dimensions on our website. As you can see, it is very important to confirm your vehicles size in order to determine prior to your arrival whether or not your car will fit. Unfortunately, the only other solution is street parking as there is no secured parking in the beach area. Noise can sometimes be an issue at the beach especially during peak holiday times. In the 6 1/2 years we have owned this property, we have received less than a handful of complaints about noise and even so never enough to ruin anyones holiday. Our beach house is surrounded with mostly year round residents which makes our location much quieter than most courts in the Mission Beach area. Finally, we do pride ourselves in providing a clean property for our guests which includes both the interior and exterior. We appreciate the constructive critisism and have contacted our cleaning crew to ensure our property meets the expectations of all guests in the future. Kathy did indicate to us that there was a small cooler and we have since added a large cooler which is now available for our guests use.

FANTASTIC FAMILY HOLIDAY HOME

  • 5 of 5

This house was perfect for our family vacation in San Diego. Close enough to everything to be used as a base for our day trips, and far enough from the city to really soak up the Mission Beach atmosphere, the local restaurants and attractions.

The house itself was clean and comfortable, well provisioned with almost everything you could ask for - although not having a kettle to boil water meant that making a cup of tea was a little trickier than we are used to! Our 4 children (aged 12, 10, 5 and 3) had a ball on the beach with the toys provided and we all enjoyed wandering along the boardwalk at sunset each night.

The owners made everything easy for us in organising our stay and we would have no hesitation in recommending this house to anyone. Thank you for helping us make some wonderful family memories!

Great house in a great location. Awesome owners!

  • 5 of 5

My family and I stayed at this property in May 2013 for my boys' birthday and Mother's Day. Gary was awesome and very accommodating to our crazy little family. The house was comfortable and spacious enough for me, my lady and our 6 kids. The patio and balconies were great and it's only a short walk to the beach or the bay. I would highly recommend this place and will be staying there again myself.
