DISHWASHER HASSLES AND BEARS

PROs:
>Nice, spacious house with interesting layout, comfortable seating, nice kitchen, attractive landscaping on small lot, nice clean hot tub, lush grass
>nice neighborhood, though high density--houses very nearby, left and right
>attractive, moderate-sized lawn area behind house, pond with cattails, and views of golf course fairway
>caretakers are responsive to problems...at least, it seems, problems that don't require the owner to spend cash to fix

>Hassles with dishwasher really intruded on our enjoyment of hte property.
>Unexpected appearance of a black bear ON THE DRIVEWAY caused some alarm.
>We found claims of dramatic views to be overstated

This property is nice. However, it seems best for "holing up"...not really for enjoying the outdoors. THis is because a) other houses are very nearby, b) views are attractive out the back but they are mostly "territorial" views, not stunning mountain vistas as advertised, and c) the presence of bears is definitely unnerving, at best.

*** I find it unacceptable that the property owner does not mention the presence of bears. ***

We brought a half-dozen kids with us. Three were biking on the drive when confronted by a bear at a distance of about 12 feet ("I almost ran into it!") We hadn't heard about them until this point. Needless to say, a seven-year-old and two 12-year-olds are not ideally equipped to handle the surprise of a close encounter with a large carnivore. The caretaker shrugged the issue of the bears off as if it were nothing, jsut part of the landscape. However, regardless of how accommodated the bears have become to garbage-can surfing, etc. there is still significant danger whenever a human-bear interaction occurs. Imagine this happening late at night when, say, an unsuspecting guest is unloading food from a car after a long trip.

Separately, while the caretakers were prompt to respond to dishwasher failure, they didn't solve the problem. We ended up waiting around the house for a couple hours trying to solve the problem ourselves, and standing by during multiple visits by the caretaker and repair personnel. Ultimately, there efforts were unsuccessful. We finally asked them to leave us alone and fix it after our departure. The fact that multiple prior guests had experienced dishwasher problems was particularlly irritating. One can only surmise the owner (or caretaker) is unwilling to spend the money to fix the problem. Instead, renters pay the price. Not OK.

Owner's Response: I find it odd that this guest has waited almost a year to submit this review with complaints about the dishwasher and bears. While we had 2 guests in a row the previous winter who had problems with the dishwasher, we had thought we'd long ago solved that problem and had no further issues until this guest's arrival in early August, 2013. We're not talking about a cheap old dishwasher here, but an expensive, quiet, luxury model. We made every effort to fix the problem as quickly as possible and in fact, the repair company did fix it prior to this guest's departure and we've had no further issues since, notwithstanding heavy use since then.

The owner has spared little expense outfitting the house with amenities for the comfort and enjoyment of guests, including the exceptional upgrading of all 4 bathrooms with contemporary fixtures and heated tile flooring so the guest's comments regarding the owner are completely false and unfair.

I'm not sure what is meant by "territorial views" but they are very scenic. From the expansive deck that runs the width of the house outside the kitchen and living room areas, one can soak in the tranquility of the duck pond as golfers approach the 2nd green while casting one's gaze further to soak in the views of Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains. The landscaping and layout of the house allows you to do all this in privacy without having to look at neighbours or be looked at by them. But yes, it is a neighbourhood with houses all around.

Whistler + summertime = bears. Whistler is famous for its black bears and many tourists come to see them. The Whistler Blackcomb website prominently promotes bear viewing tours. Digital overhead highway reader boards warn people not to stop and feed the bears. They don't generally come around the homes in neighbourhoods unless people leave out food and/or garbage. Our Notes for Guests in this and in all our properties explicitly makes note this danger and warns guests not to leave out any food or garbage. I don't recall the guest presenting the bear story in such dramatic fashion at the time, so my casual response was likely commensurate with the manner in which it was relayed at the time.

As noted at the outset of this measured response, it seems odd that this guest has chosen to dredge up recollections of his stay with us last summer. I will refrain however, from sharing some of my own recollections of his stay.

STUNNING, COZY HOME, MOUNTAIN VIEWS FROM HOTTUB BEST CHRISTMAS EVER!

We had our first large family Christmas vacation here where two families came together for the first time. We had some skiers and some loungers and this house accommodated all parties perfectly. Large, comfortable bedrooms, lots of space for everyone, and a nice large kitchen for many to move around in. Plus an amazing view of the mountains from the hot tub.

We had a problem with the hot tub one day but Peter responded quickly getting a guy out there to fix it within a few hours. We hope to get back here again someday soon!

good place for a larger group. Peter was very responsive when we let him know our propane tank was empty. needs a new dishwasher...i will let owners know. (make sure to verify its been replaced before you book)

Owner's Response: As Shane noted in his review, we did respond quickly regarding the bbq propane, but didn't know of the dishwasher issue until this review was submitted. In speaking with the cleaner, it sounds like we need to fix the rinse agent holder to ensure the glasses in the top rack get properly cleaned. We'll get on this right away so thanks Shane for letting us know and glad you had a great time and enjoyed all the rest of the features the house has to offer. We look forward to looking after you again next year.

Although we found the house comfortable & spacious for our family of 12 we were disappointed by the condition of the dishwasher - most of the dishes and glasses were dirty or coated with undissolved soap; and the oven door does not shut properly making it difficult to judge cooking time. Also the house is quite cluttered with collectibles, many of the everyday dishes are chipped, cutlery was in short supply and several light bulbs need replacing. With downhill skiing and Whistler Village a short drive away we certainly enjoyed the location.

Owner's Response: It would've been nice to have the feedback right away so that we could've done something about it. We have since changed dishwasher detergents for starters and checked dishes for chips etc. to ensure we have a sufficient supply of good dishes and cutlery for future guests. The oven door has been a problem previously and we had it fixed, but clearly we need to get the repairman back in and fix this once and for all. We agree there are too many collectibles and have expressed this to the owner - hopefully we can remove a few while preserving the ambiance of having momentos that have special meaning and are appropriate to the decor.
