About Dennis Sheffield

My name is Dennis Sheffield. (2nd from the left next to Earnest T. Bass). I have lived in Nashville since 1991 but am originally from Marianna Florida, a small town in the panhandle about 50 miles north of the Gulf Coast. (Florida State Seminole Country - 1981 Alum) I own a promotional products and T-Shirt business, am sell Traeger Wood Pellet Grills. I know how to sing a good song and can tell funny jokes. I'm single and in search of a wealthy 90 something (female) to marry with a really bad cough.

Dennis Sheffield purchased this cabin in 1997

Why Dennis Sheffield chose Oneida

After living on the North Florida Gulf Coast and observing what made vacation rentals succeed, I spent years looking for a new development in the Tennessee mountains. I wanted undiscovered country since Gatlinburg reminded me too much of Panama City Beach. Sharing space, restaurants and Highways with millions of tourists was not my idea of relaxing. While driving in North East Tennessee one weekend I happened onto the Big South Fork National River and Recreational Area after being lost. This was the beautiful secluded river with high bluffs, incredible natural settings (but no tourists) I had dreamed about. Bought the land, created a large pond between the ridges and built a fantastic log home. The legendary singer/song writer, Tom T. Hall, liked it so much he said I could name it after him if he and Dixie could stay and write songs from time to time. Great folks - very generous arrangement.

What makes this cabin unique

This is the most relaxing place you could ever imagine. I tell people there's nothing to do but ya don't have enough time to do it all. I usually never leave the cabin for days at a time after hiking, swimming, fishing, love cooking in that incredible well stocked kitchen, grilling and smoking on the Traeger Wood Pellet Grill, reading, and playing music. There is a great Yamaha upright piano that fills the home with harmonics. Sitting in the hot tub gazing at night skies that are like nothing I've ever seen in the south. You can pick out satellites and shooting stars streaming across the heavens. Rocking outside on the covered porches or out on the dock reading while enjoying the north western breezes enjoying the quite solitude makes for the perfect get a way from it all vacation I've ever experienced. It's a hard place to leave once you've unwound. I also wanted to provide a place that families would enjoy for gatherings and vacations. Kids really love the pond and hiking into the Big South Fork Park, horseback trail riding and the train to the old mining camp in Stearns KY are highlights for guests. And of course the Big South Fork River for rafting and white water canoeing is spectacular. There are beautiful hiking trails along the river to Angle Falls and other points that are considered the best trails in the country.

Peaceful, relaxing... mixed with some adventure!

  • 5 of 5

We just got back from an awesome week-long stay at this beautiful cabin. Dennis, the owner, makes sure you have everything one would need for a great stay. He even gave us advise on where to take our car when we thought we were having car trouble. Luckily, it was fixable with just a stop at O'Reilly's. We have stayed at several cabins in the past and this was BY FAR the most well-stocked and definitely the cleanest...and with the most down to earth, personable owner. You can tell that Dennis takes alot of pride in his cabin and he truly wants others to enjoy it. He also sent out the most complete list of things to do and even emailed us a heads up the week before we left to let us know what was going on in the area for the week we would be staying. That was so appreciated and it's little things like that will always make this cabin stand out. The first two days we were there, we just enjoyed lounging around the cabin, sitting on the deck by the pond...fishing and sunning. One day we had the most beautiful rain storm and we sat on the porch on the rocking chairs... listening to the rain and thunder. The porch is wide with a large overhang, so we stayed completely dry while the rain pounded down all around us. That will be a great memory. When we were ready to leave the cabin for the day, we chose to go horseback riding. Luckily, Dennis had Southeast Pack Trips as a suggested activity on his website. Larry, the owner, took us on the most amazing 1/2 day adventure through beautiful trails and forest and creeks in Big South Fork and on his surrounding land. It was the best horseback riding we ever experienced! He customized our trip to be exactly what we wanted to do. We told him we wanted more adventure and he definitely gave us that! The horses were beautiful and well trained. The next day we went on a "River and Rail" all day trip with Sheltowee Trace Outfitters. It was an 8 hr day trip that first took us on the Big South Fork Railway through the old coal mining towns and then canoeing down the river for about 2 hrs. It was very well organized and also included a nice packed lunch in a souvenir lunch bag. We had a wonderful and memorable time at Tom T Hall cabin. Thanks Dennis, for sharing your beautiful spot in the world! We hope to come back for a visit again.

Girls Weekend Getaway

  • 5 of 5

What a great girls weekend getaway location! It has all the comforts of home. We had plenty of space and we never wanted for anything the cabin didn't furnish. We enjoyed the hot tub, we had the fireplace going most of the time, food shopping was close by. We felt safe and secure! We will be back! Thank you!

Amazing Cabin

  • 5 of 5

We cannot say enough about the Tom T Hall Cabin!! I'm not sure if we loved the cabin, the location, or all the amenities the best. We could not have picked a better place to stay during the Christmas holiday season. The cabin was loaded with everything you would need and then some. We were able to fish, hike, run, cook s'mores at the fire-pit and enjoy the hot tub. The weather was somewhat rainy at first but not enough to keep us from enjoying the outside. We would come in and enjoy some warm time in front of the fireplace and alot of family time. The huge dining table was nice as it held everyone at one time with plenty of room. We had two of our dogs who enjoyed themselves as much as we did. We so appreciate that Dennis allows animals as they are such a huge part of our family. We were even able to utilize the small balcony as a sleeping spot--one of the spare mattresses fit in there perfectly--hung a blanket over the rail for privacy and it worked out great!! We will definitely come back to the cabin--hopefully during the warmer months for some quiet and peaceful time. It was truly amazing.

Paradise for Christmas

  • 5 of 5

If you are looking for a place to relax, enjoy nature, bring your dog, hike, and be with friends or family, then Tom T. Hall Cabin is your place! My family came to celebrate Christmas in the woods and we had a blast! Our dog got to swim in the lake, we went on a 4 mile hike as a family, the kids had so much space to run and play during the day, we had a fire pit and made smores, played horseshoes, and cooked every meal at home! There was plenty of space for 4 families, everything you could possibly need in the kitchen, plenty of towels and linens, firewood already chopped, and it was very clean and even decorated for Christmas for us! I could go on and on about the cabin, but what we loved the most was that we felt right at home! Dennis is a one of a kind guy, he is helpful, kind, caring, and reassures you in every way! We got emails with detailed information, everything from where to buy meat for cooking, to how to get to the cabin (GPS isn’t accurate), and where to go to the store (liquor and grocery) and much more. We will definitely be back to Tom T. ! Thank you Dennis for sharing your piece of paradise with us! We made some lasting memories.

Loved the peacefulness!!

  • 5 of 5

If you are looking for an extremely quiet getaway, this is it! At times all we could hear were the leaves dropping. We had a great time fishing, horseback riding, (loved Larry at Southeast Pack Trips), cooking s'mores over the fire pit, playing horseshoes, and just plain relaxing. The Traeger grill came in handy. There is a restaurant Dennis recommended that was awesome!! Bacaras. We had a 6 course meal for just under $60 for the two of us! The waitress told us the cook was a master chef that had come there after tiring of working in New York and New Orleans. The food was outstanding. Very relaxed sitting in an old schoolhouse. But the best part, thanks Dennis for the heads up phone call, was the meteor shower we viewed early one morning. The sky is phenomenal there at night. Dennis was very helpful with suggestions and I' m sure we will return.

The Best Cabin in Tennessee!!!

  • 5 of 5

Dennis,

Theresa and I had an absolutely wonderful stay (even with a couple rainy days!!!). We took some long walks, I fished one day (even caught a fish!) paddled around the pond in the canoe (and when I fell in the water climbing out my wife and I both had a good laugh) mostly we just enjoyed the profound peace and solitude and the natural beauty surrounding us. We spent a lot of time on the back porch in the rocking Adirondack chairs just talking, we read books in front of the fireplace, I even played my favorite Tom T Hall song "That's How I Got To Memphis" on the guitar one night! Everything was even better then advertised, your cabin is truly an oasis in the woods! Theresa cooked a homemade chicken pot pie one day and a delicious beef stew another day along with several grand breakfasts. The kitchen had everything we we needed to make just about anything! I cooked steaks on the The Traeger grill the first night (they came out perfect!). On another day I slow cooked 2 racks of Ribs ( used a recipe from the book in the cabin), they were fantastic! When my gas grill gets retired I'll be calling you. :>)

We are already talking about booking a week in October next year and bringing our son and our daughter (and her husband) hopefully they will be moving back to the states from Japan next year. That would be a wonderful way for all of us to reconnect. Ill send some pictures from my phone once I download them. I will be wearing my Tom T Hall cap proudly around town. You have been far beyond helpful in every way answering all of our questions in great detail.Thank You for sharing your piece of heaven and allowing us to enjoy such a WONDERFUL PLACE!!!
