Villa Cabomar is located steps from the beach in Costa Rica's cruise ship port and offers a luxurious base for exploring Costa Rica's natural wonders or a place for relaxing in the Villa's private pool or on Costa Rica's longest beach. The Villa, located in an established residential neighborhood, is approximately four blocks from USAC Puntarenas Center, making it a convenient location for families visiting students at USAC. Restaurants featuring fresh seafood as well as steaks and continental cuisine are within short walking distance. Downtown Puntarenas, with more restaurants, banks and ATMs, the central market, and modern, well-stocked supermarkets, is a comfortable walk or a short cab ride.
Puntarenas is approximately a ninety minute drive via a limited access toll road from Costa Rica's Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO) located in San Jose, the capital city. Most US air carriers provide frequent and convenient service to San Jose from the US. All major car rental companies are located at the airport or we can arrange transportation from the airport and car rental in Puntarenas.
The heart of Villa Cabomar is the open-air atrium between the kitchen and the computer area/laundry. A custom designed spa with water jets and falling water along with a wet bar, and half bath makes the back patio a private respite for relaxing. Villa Cabomar features high-level security measures, including gated parking, electronic entrance gates, and intercom. Native woods, original art and custom made furniture are found throughout the villa. Guests also have access to a fully equipped kitchen and washer and dryer.
Arrive at Villa Cabomar in the afternoon following your flight to Costa Rica. Enjoy a stroll on Paseo de los Turistas to experience the amazing sunset over the mountains on the Nicoya Peninsula. Linger over a dinner of Costa Rican seafood specialties at a nearby restaurant. Spend the next day exploring Puntarenas and relaxing on its endless beach. Awake refreshed and ready for an adventure to one of Costa Rica’s many natural attractions or spend the day relaxing on Villa Cabomar’s private patio next to the pool.
Some of Costa Rica's most spectacular beaches are within easy reach of Villa Cabomar. Ferries to beaches in the southern region of the Nicoya Peninsula - Montezuma, Mal Pais, Tambor - and to beaches in the northern region of the peninsula - Samara, Nicoya, Nosara - leave from the docks one half mile from Villa Cabomar. An great one day excursion is taking the ferry to Paquera and a taxi to Playa Organos, a secluded beach across the Gulf of Nicoya from Puntarenas. Remember to make arrangements with the cab driver to pick you up in time to catch the ferry back to Puntarenas. The ferry is a scenic, relaxing alternative to the long, overland drive on rough roads to these stunning beaches.
The Central Pacific's largest city, Puntarenas sits on a long, narrow peninsula in the Gulf of Nicoya. For years, it was the country's principal port, and although a newer port in nearby Caldera handles cargo, Puntarenas now hosts cruise ships and a large fishing fleet anchors in the estuary behind town. Being the country’s most important fishing port, Puntarenas is the perfect place to enjoy fresh seafood, such as camarones al ajillo (shrimp scampi), pescado entero (whole fried fish), or ceviche de mariscos (bits of fresh seafood marinated in lime juice with onions, peppers and spices).
Puntarenas is a lively town on weekends, when people from San José fill its waterfront restaurants and bars. A series of open-air 'kioskos' specializing in ice cream and fresh tropical fruit drinks line the beach and is the perfect place to head for dessert or refreshment.
We built Villa Cabomar as our retirement home and are happy to make it available for your vacation in Costa Rica. We have lived in Northern Virginia for almost 30 years. Martha is a Puntarenas native and a talented artist. Her taste and attention to details can be seen throughout the house - from the original art on the walls, to the custom designed dining room table, and the handcrafted cabinetry made of native renewable wood. Our adult children consider Villa Cabomar and Puntarenas their second home and visit at least once a year.
Cabell & Martha Cropper purchased this house in 2005
Villa Cabomar is uniquely private but provides many options for your vacation. Our housekeeper considers guests as family members and goes the extra mile to make your stay in Villa Cabomar relaxing and enjoyable. She prepares and serves a complete breakfast everyday (except Sunday) and provides hotel-style housekeeping so that you always have a clean and orderly place to come back to from your adventures. Puntarenas, the town, is home to numerous moderately priced restaurants, a lively downtown, and a wide, gentle beach that stretches for several kilometers. It is the perfect starting point for tours to the interior of the country, the Nicoya Peninsula with its quirky beach towns and nature preserves, as well as other Pacific Coast beaches. Puntarenas is only 90 minutes from the international airport in San Jose.
Villa Cabomar is unique in that you feel as if you have a home in Costa Rica. You are not sharing its amenities with anyone else. Housekeeping and breakfast are provided so that you can spend your time by the pool, exploring Puntarenas, lying on the beach or seeing the natural beauty of Costa Rica. Having our roots in Puntarenas gives us access to resources that can make your vacation even more enjoyable. We can help you plan tours and ground transportation to and from the airport with a reliable bi-lingual guide with a well-maintained air-conditioned van. We can provide suggestions for destinations that are 'off the beaten path' and transportation alternatives to rental cars. Puntarenas, the major city on the Pacific Coast, provides a taste of the true 'pura vida' (Costa Rican expression for 'good life'). It welcomes visitors from around the world, but remains a city of friendly people who love to share their beach and lifestyle. Villa Cabomar with its inviting interior atrium and cool spa pool in the patio is a welcome respite from the bustle of the town and sightseeing. It is your private oasis.
Thanks again for your hospitality. It was a great and different experience from our first trip here with a toddler and we already have a to-do list for our third trip.
The addition to your house is beautiful and Teresita was amazing and great company as usual.
It was so nice getting to spend time with you two as well. I think that is what I will take away most - getting to know you guys better and establishing a life-long friendship. We look forward to our return.
My sister and I stayed at Villa Cabomar for over a dozen days between the months of April-July 2013. As we own property elsewhere in Costa Rica and have traveled extensively throughout the country since 1996, we are very familiar with the hotel and vacation rental market. Suffice to say that for a private home, Villa Cabomar is the nicest property available in Puntarenas and certainly in the top tier for Costa Rica. The home is extremely spacious and comfortable and constructed to a European or American standard and includes private bathrooms for each guest room, very good air conditioning (Puntarenas is hot!) and a lovely private landscaped back patio and plunge pool. The caretaker, Teresita, is absolutely fantastic and keeps the home literally spotless. Everything in the home is in perfect working order and Teresita serves a variety of typical Tico breakfasts with strong Costa Rican coffee and fresh tropical fruits daily. We were very thankful that Villa Cabomar has a washing machine due to the hot weather and the sand from the beach and also for the good wifi. While Villa Cabomar is not “on the beach,” the paseo (beach boardwalk) is just a block away and you will be free from the constant barrage of trinket and lottery ticket sellers. Booking our stay was very easy. The owners were always very responsive to our emails and calls and I appreciated that I was able to pay for our multiple stays by simply depositing the funds into their Citibank account at my local Citibank branch as opposed to dealing with wire transfers and such. As a final recommendation, try a meal at Matobe’s pizzeria on the paseo (closed Wednesdays) – it may well be the best restaurant in town.
My husband and I, along with my brother and wife, stayed at the lovely Villa Cabomar the first two weeks of March 2015. Martha, whom we were lucky to meet, is a warm and welcoming host who did not mind waiting extra long into the night for us because our plane got delayed on our arrival. The communication pre trip could not have been better with Martha and Cabell answering all our questions quickly and thoroughly.
The Villa is as beautiful as in the pictures. Being from Canada, we appreciated that the bedrooms had air conditioning and the plunge pool became our go to place every day. There is plenty of room to have privacy and beautiful common areas to gather.
Teresita, as everyone else has said, is a real treasure. We all looked forward to her delicious, large breakfasts every morning. Fortunately she was happy to come in and prepare breakfast early for us on the days we had excursions. She kept the Villa spotless. It was fun trying to communicate with her through gestures, Spanish/English dictionaries and translating sites on the web. It was well worth the effort as she gave us information on how to make a delicious passion fruit drink, how to take the sting of jellyfish away, shared information about our families, and she even arranged for a taxi to pick us up on the other side of the ferry in Paquera when we ventured there on our own. She was worried about us so leant us her cell phone as back up. We appreciated everything she did for us and will always remember her kindness.
You can’t go wrong in booking Villa Cabomar for you vacation. We have many happy memories of our time in Costa Rica.
Villa Cabomar! Amazing home! From the first email contact with the owners I knew I found a special property. They were so very helpful with any questions we had and helped us arrange transportation from the airport to Villa Cabomar. Our daughter had been studying through USAC in Puntarenas and we wanted to visit her upon completion of her fall term. I searched homes in Puntarenas and the pictures of Villa Cabomar took my breath away. It is even more beautiful in person. Teresita, the caretaker at the house is a dream! She also cooks the best breakfast too and when we needed to catch an early boat tour, she was there to make sure we had a lovely breakfast before heading out at 8AM! I would recommend this home to anyone looking to stay in the town of Puntarenas. Each bedroom has a beautiful bathroom, the plunge pool was so refreshing after a day of touring. I can't say enough wonderful things about this entire experience renting a home so far away from where we live! The homeowners made me feel so comfortable asking any question, big or small. They provided guidance, suggestions of day trips, transportation ideas/options. The home is even more beautiful in person. This house is a must for anyone looking to stay in "The Punt" as our daughter refers to it! Loved Everything about the home and our experience. Just wish we could have stayed longer!
We arrived at Villa Cabomar on Friday afternoon, greeted by Terisita who had two cold beers & ceviche waiting for us. She gave us a tour of the house and said she would return in the morning to make our breakfast. She telephoned Marta who also welcomed us to their home. The home is very well maintained and the 'spool' in the back patio is perfect for quick dips when the heat becomes too much. The bedroom is air conditioned; the bed comfortable making our sleeps very comfortable. The property is situated close to the beach, corner groceries and excellent restaurants. The people of Puntarenas are very warm and friendly.
Highlight of our stay however, was Terisita - she is absolutely wonderful and made us feel part of the family. Breakfasts were a real treat with lots of fresh fruit.
Cabell & Marta provided us with a very helpful 'guide' for the house, local attractions and restaurants which was very useful - including the detailed directions from San Jose airport. We would definitely recommend Villa Cabomar to any of our friends or relatives!
The Villa Cabomar is an excellent property for visitors to the Puntarenas area who are interested in a well equipped, very clean, secure, attractive and comfortable home base. Puntarenas is about 1.5-2 hours by taxi/van from San Jose. (Great airport). The amenities were very appreciated (refreshing pool, courtyard, 3 airconditioned bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms, well equipped kitchen, washer/dryer). Martha and Cabell were terrific and helped us with preplanning, including excellent suggestions for transportation and support for our trip plans/excursions. The best feature - our wonderful Teresita, who not only is a great housekeeper and cook, she became our best friend during our stay. Simply a lovely lady and could not do enough to help us with communication and enjoyment of our stay. Puntarenas would not be considered a lovely tourist destination itself. The people of Puntarenas were very friendly and patient with us, and we had no concerns regarding our safety. The banks are downtown for ATM/exchange of currency - about a 15 minute walk from Villa Cabomar. There was some good tourist shopping on Fridays at the beach when the cruise ship docks for the day. There was good and delicious fresh food, meat and other groceries available at neighbourhood stores.
The restaurants however, were easy to walk to on the beach, and the food (seafood, fabulous steaks, pollo/chicken, pasta) was excellent and reasonable at all 4 that we visited. The Pizza Hut was overpriced. There was a modest casino nearby within 10-15 minutes walking north, that provided some fun entertainment. Visitors should take advantage of the ferry across Nicoya Bay - less than $2.00 per ride and opens up adventures to the western Nicoya Bay peninsula, including the hidden gem of Montezuma (reminded us of Salt Spring Island with artisans, yoga and free-spirits). There are many great playas (beaches) to enjoy here. Take a taxi in Paquera to the hidden "Las Vegas" restaurant for an outstanding seafood meal. There are great one-to-two day trips from Puntarenas that can be easily arranged and enjoyed (La Fortuna area rain forests and hot spas, Arenal volcano area, white water rafting, ziplining, hiking, river cruise with crocodile siting)
My husband and two nieces had a fabulous week in Costa Rica to help celebrate my 55th birthday! What a celebration it was!
We found everything beyond our expectations. The house was amazing, so charming and comfortable. The spa was absolutely refreshing in the heat of the day! Nights were so quiet and peacful! Teresita is an absolute jewel and made our visit all the more special. She is an amazing cook and a delight to get to know (we wanted to take her home with us!)
We had a wonderful time trying out the restaurants and our favorite was La Yunta! My husband loved the mussels and the cerviche was delicious!
Punteranas doesn't have a great deal to offer but it was a great place for us to explore the Pacific side of the country. We made day trips and enjoyed everything from horsebacking riding, canapoy tours, and national parks. We had a full day at Peace Lodge which we also highly recommend. Our only disappointment was that we did not get to Tortuga Island as the catamaran
was out of service. I guess that means we will have to go back!
Many thanks to Cabell and Martha for all that they did in anticipating our needs (including a terrific guide that they sent with all the necessary information we needed to make our visit hassle free).
We rate this visit and Vill Cabomar a pure 10!
