Farrand Hall, like all historic homes, offers a unique experience that we love to share with our guests. At 165 years old, this home provides an elegant departure from modern living and allows guests the chance to appreciate the beauty and charm of its Pre-Civil War construction.

The first floor of the home features several unique experiences for guests. It all begins with the entry hall, at 28 feet long and 7.5 feet wide its oversize yet intimate proportions provide perfectly glamorous transitions throughout the house. Then there is the formal dining room complete with original fireplace sporting rose colored Turkish marble.
A personal favorite is the double parlor and it is sure to steal your heart with its eight windows spread across three sides of the house. Flooded with natural light, this room provides the perfect setting for mixing cocktails in our collection of vintage glassware at any time of the day! Or maybe its the large fully outfitted kitchen that will inspire your taste buds. Next to that is the breakfast room, perfect for pairing morning coffee with bird watching or an afternoon glass of wine while paging through one of the many titles in our collection of cookbooks. Last, but certainly not least, is the library. Inspired by an old family hunting lodge, this space provides a relaxed yet sophisticated atmosphere perfect for enjoying game night next to a crackling fire.

Now on to the second floor which is accessible from the entry halls open staircase. At the top of the stairs begins the upper hall. Echoing the spaciousness of the entry hall, the upper hall features a built-in window seat that gives guests the perfect spot to watch the constant flow of local Amish buggies trotting past the house at all times of the year. Each of the four bedrooms is individually styled and outfitted with queen beds. Three of the bedroom include accompanying sitting rooms providing guests ample space. One bedroom has an en-suite bathroom with a claw foot tub.

As intoxicating as we may find the interiors, the grounds of the estate have their own allure. To the south of the house there is the fenced in 'backyard' which includes a dining table and chairs under a shade canopy of mature walnut trees. On the north side there is addition picnic table seating and a six burner grill. The north patio is covered in a ceiling of garden lights that provide the perfect glow for late evenings spent dining al fresco.

We love having land! However, we are unable to convey with any amount of specificity the vast number of the native plants and rolling areas that guests are welcome to explore. However, we would advise our guests to grab a pair of scissors from the kitchen before heading out so they can collect a fresh cut bouquet of flora for their companions to enjoy. Depending of the time of year in which you plan on visiting you may find blackberries or raspberries around the property. Throw them in some pancakes or muddle them into a cocktail, I'm sure you can figure something out!

Take it or leave it, we love you either way. But if you take it, we hope that you love, enjoy and protect this home just like it was your own. We view ourselves but as temporary stewards of this house and plan on it being around for future generations to experience all that it has to offer.

Very relaxing
We enjoyed being remote in a beautiful historic house. We gardened a little, cooked too, using the grill, and ate outside. We did need the mosquito repellent we found there. The house is on the national register so it’s seriously important and interesting in every room. The owners are collectors of every odd thing as well as books so we were never bored.

Owners were wonderful but....
This is a long review, please bear with me! The owners of the property are excellent - highly responsive, friendly, and available at anytime! They really work hard to make this a pleasant stay. We were greeted upon check-in with a lovely picnic basket with champagne & ingredients for s'mores. The property has a lot of potential, but there were a few issues that made our trip a bit of a bummer. First, know that there isn't much at all directly around it. It's 40 mins to the nearest city. If you're looking to just stay in and relax, this is your place. The outdoor grounds are also beautiful and lovely to explore. However, it's very important to know that most of the windows do not have screens. Being that there is no air conditioning, windows need to be opened in hot weather to prevent the house from becoming too hot to be in, but doing so allows an unbelievable amount of insects to fly/crawl right inside. It becomes akin to camping in the middle of summer while leaving your tent wide open all day and night. Fortunately, we didn't have too many mosquitoes the first couple of nights, but we did on our third night, which meant a lot of bites overnight for us and our children. The lack of screens also meant lots of bugs getting into our food. For the price of the stay, I would've expected the windows to have screens to prevent this problem. If possible, it would also be great to just have some window units available for air conditioning in bedrooms in hot weather because the house does get incredibly hot and takes a long time to cool down. There are a ton of cool (breakable) knick knacks in the house, many of them low down, which is fun to look at, but if you are going to bring dogs like we did, know this in advance. There is a lot that any dog could accidentally break with just a tail wag. Luckily, this was not an issue for us, but just something to know ahead of time. We set aside our last day for boating as provided in the description, but unfortunately the boat broke down just 40 mins into our day. Certainly not the owner's fault by any means - they came out to tow us in within an hour and were extremely apologetic, but because of that, we had nothing to do that day and ended up leaving a night early since it was so incredibly hot. We were not entitled to any refund, so we just absorbed it. All in all, the location was extremely expensive, and I didn't feel the experience supported the price we paid. However, again, the owners were fantastic!

Hello! James works in consulting and Jacob is a librarian. Together we have worked to restore and bring life back to this massive house. It has been a whirlwind project that has been both educational and enjoyable.

Why they chose this property

We simply fell in love with the house! Yes, it needed a lot of work. But with almost all of it original features and charm we felt it was something that we really connected too. During the the year long renovation we slowly built the character of the house and are very excited to share it with guests. Being in the county in a 165 year old house is a very unique experience that we have grown to love.

What makes this property unique

Farrand Hall is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the List of Historic Sites by the State of Michigan. At 4,000 sqft. the house seem very large at first, but upon exploring the rooms and spaces you find that it perfectly proportioned for a spacious experience. Much of the house maintains it original molding and features.
