As you walk down our secluded fern lined path, enjoy the sounds of the rainforest that surrounds you. Our tucked away cottage is family owned and operated. We have preserved the beautiful natural landscaping and take personal pride in making sure you have a wonderful stay. The cottage sits alone on a half acre of lush forest and truly is a hideaway. Fern Tree Hideaway is only 2 minutes from the Volcano Village and 4 minutes from the national park. Decorated with all original art, our cottage is very cheery and for those who really want to feel 'miles' away from everything. Fern Tree Hideaway has been in our family many years. We love nature, art, music and travel and hope this is reflected in our cottage!
Decorated with original art by local artists and filled with charm and warmth, we know your every need will be met. Enjoy cooking in our spacious, fully equipped Bistro style kitchen, or order in and go straight for the jacuzzi bathtub in its own private bathhouse. Watch a movie while cuddled up in the comfortable living room. Enjoy a peaceful nights sleep in our super cozy beds. In the morning awake to the sounds of the local birds as they play in the surrounding fern forest. Have your coffee on one of our three ‘lanais’ (decks) while you decide on which adventure to do for the day.
Our cottage lends itself to anyone looking for a truly peaceful, relaxing getaway. Whether its finishing that novel, sketching, playing guitar in the morning sun, enjoying the sounds of the forest with a glass of wine, or simply doing nothing, our cottage is definitely for you!
We are located only one mile from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, the world famous heritage site. In about three minutes you can be enjoying one of our many charming restaurants, shops or art galleries. Volcano has so many beautiful hikes to choose from along with exploring lava tubes or catching a round of golf.
The Old Town of Hilo with its Historic bay front and glorious parks and waterfalls is a short thirty minute drive North of Volcano. Thirty minutes in the opposite direction heading South of Volcano is one of the Big Island of Hawaii's best beaches, Punalu'u Black sand beach. It is known for green sea turtles and incomparable beauty.
There is no where else you will find a community as charming and creative as Volcano Village. There is a feeling here like none other. It is filled with a mix of musicians, artists, writers and much more. A great way to see and feel the aloha spirit of Volcano Village is by mingling with the locals themselves at the local farmers market held every Sunday morning. Be sure not to miss Volcano Winery and golf course, only 5 minutes away. And of course you have to check out Volcanoes National Park.
Our family has lived in Hawaii for over 20 years. We love the Ocean(We own a kayak company in Kona on the East side) and we love traveling.Currently we all live in the Puna district and are enjoying our small family farm.Currently we have chickens, cows,South down baby doll sheep ,cats, dogs and much more to come.
When the weather is good we love swimming, gardening or painting.
Volcano has got to be one of the most beautiful places in the world. Our family used to live in Kailua Kona and loved coming to Volcano to escape the heat.So eventually we decided to buy a family home that we could use for weekends and such.We did not use it as often as we should have so decided to share it with everyone and make it a vacation rental.
When staying at our house we love having a big family dinner. The kitchen has plenty of room for prepping and the bar top is perfect for visiting while guest drink wine.During the Summer months we eat outside and during the winter we eat in the dining room and follow dinner with a good hand of cards and then maybe a movie.
A special treat is filling the bathhouse with candles and enjoying a long hot soak at the end of an activity filled day.
With so many windows looking out into the forest we always see plenty of rare Hawaiian birds.
We just wanted to express how much we all enjoyed staying at the Fern Tree Hideaway! It's such a beautiful jewel tucked away in the lush fern and ohia forest...we didn't want to leave! Thank you for making the transaction feel safe and secure, and for keeping the cottage in such a clean and well-maintained condition. We will definitely be referring others to your lovely hideaway, and will be back in the near future!

We've stayed at Ferntree Hideaway several times and we love it! My husband and I have concluded that this home is perfect in every way. It is a wonderful mix of a cabin in the rainforest, but has many wonderful touches which take it way beyond "cabin". My favorite spot is the living room corner with the windows. It allows the rainforest to be part of the living space. The tub with its wall of window is also a wonderful place to enjoy being in the rainforest. This home incorporates its surroundings so well, you can really experience the rainforest while staying warm and dry!
While you feel like you are in the middle of the jungle, our favorite Thai restaurant is only a few minutes away and a quick phone call gets an order to go. Eating it back at Ferntree makes it all the more special.
One thing which we always find amazing is how cool it is up here at Volcano. We always end up wearing our jeans and warmest "Hawaii clothes" while we are here. The bedding though always keeps us nice and toasty.
Kristen is an excellent hostess and is always available for advice. It is so easy to rent from her.
We are already looking forward to our next visit to Volcano and Ferntree Hideaway!
We were grateful to find this place after two previous rentals fell through and then were so pleased because of its charm and comfort. The cottage is warm and inviting, with comfy furniture and so much beautiful natural wood. It rained one day while we were there, and we all enjoyed sitting in the midst of all that lush and dripping foliage. The location was fabulous; the proximity to Volcano National Park made it so easy for us to take multiple trips for hikes and to view the crater. We didn't use the kitchen much for anything other than a quick breakfast but it appeared to be well-equipped. We appreciated the fresh fruit that had been provided. If you are thinking of renting this place, don't hesitate. The owners are gracious and friendly, the location is excellent, and the cottage itself is as clean and comfortable as you could hope for.
We had a wonderful stay at Fern Tree Hideaway. It is rare that I ever feel like curling up on a sofa and watching a movie when I'm on vacation but the living room with the well stocked movie drawer was just too inviting to turn down and it really was the perfect way to end our first of only two nights in this wonderful home. The home is decorated with a fun mix of style and comfort. We really enjoyed the colorful paintings decorating the walls, many painted by Carol. The kitchen was wonderful, particularly because of the tea kettle. This was the only place we stayed that had a tea kettle, thank you! This cozy and comfortable home is in a perfect location to spend your days exploring the trails of Volcanoes National Park. And, after returning home to fix dinner, you can quickly get back to the park to view the crater at night - a spectacular site that shouldn't be missed! Thank you for helping make our vacation to the Big Island so memorable!
We just left Ferntree after three night stay, and already miss it. We spent busy days hiking and going to beach, and it was a welcomed base for returns. Very cozy and homey feel with very comfortable beds, we'll stocked kitchen, and beautiful grounds that really gave jungle atmosphere. The listing info is on point, but the pictures don't do it justice. The owner was very helpful with the booking and questions. The price is a bargain - I don't really understand why it doesn't cost more! I would recommend to anyone that can handle stairs.
My family of 4 stayed in this wonderful unique home. Kristen was so easy to work with even when I changed my plans a month before our arrival. The home is situated in a forest of tree ferns. An experience most will not encounter. The interior of the home was nicely decorated and had nice touches such as fresh flowers, local fruit, popcorn, tea and coffee for the taking. It is a home my family will never forget!
Kristen has been such a wonderful person to work with in booking a rental for our family vacation. Unfortunately, due to a last minute change in our summer schedule, we had to alter the dates of our travel. I am so disappointed that we did not actually get to stay at this fun and unique house. My kids were SOOO looking forward to exploring here. Sadly, it was already booked for our new dates of travel. I was able to give Kristen quick notice and she very kindly offered a refund of my deposit. I certainly was not expecting that. But am so grateful for her integrity and generosity. Plus she took so much time to answer my questions and give some tips and sightseeing recommendations as I was trying to decide which home to book originally. She truly goes above and beyond expectations. I assure you, she is very easy to work with and I have no doubt that our stay in this home would have been the best had it been available for our new dates of travel. Best wishes Kristen! We cannot thank you enough!
The little town of Volcano is in the Puna district on the East side of the Big Island. Only minutes away from the world famous 'Volcanoes National Park' there is so much to do and see. Favorites include hiking in the rain forest, 'Thurston Lava Tube', seeing the botanical gardens and having a picnic by the waterfalls. There is also Volcano Winery and Golf Course. Half an hour south is Punaluu Black sand beach with many sea turtles. Our cottage is only 2 minutes from the Volcano village and 4 minutes from the national park.
